TLDR: Shoujo manga to the fullest but with a huge dose of feels.

Long Version:
I remember picking this up at the library thinking “the art is so cute let me try it”. I’m so glad I did. I got attached to each of the characters and was laughing out loud at Najika’s antics, you definitely fall in love.

And that exact love is what makes it all the more heartbreaking.

Anyway, would definitely recommend. It’s sweet with just enough doses of reality.

One of my first shoujo manga....

Even though this was in my childhood, I am not going easy on this manga because, frankly, it was not very good even back then. Like, this is a cooking manga... but there was BARELY any actual cooking related scenes. It's mostly teenage angst, love triangles, and drama stuck in cooking background.

Honestly, why even bother with the premise in the first place then?

Shoujo abt cooking... pretty OK, so its worth a read

Emphasis on SHOUJO!
It wuznt mainly focused on cooking like yakitate ja-pan or shokugeki no soma...There were too many distractions frm cooking 4 it to be considered like them!
But it still had a fair bit of cooking in it...

Although it has some faults n I dint really like d female lead, especially in the first 20 chapters or so, I got used to her after that
N its a cute read... not bad at all

also,

abt Souma dying
Yes it wuz sad, but not devastating... n considering v knew frm the beginning who she'd end up with, it wuz a shocker but dint particularly matter...

My suggestion, if u want to read a shoujo with cooking but romance too, n dont mind young characters, then read it

Lacked something in everything

I second what the person below me said about its similarity with Fruits Baskets, with less developed characters and less believable emotional growth. But really, resembling Fruits Baskets is really not too bad a feature, since Furuba is one of my first and most loved shoujos, so I had a really nice, warm, nostalgic feeling while reading this series.

That being said, I didn't particularly love this manga. The theme was a very wise choice, since cooking appeals to a large audience most of the times, and the warm and sweet tone was a nice accompaniment to this theme. But the developments and characters were, how do I say it, kinda lousy and should have been invested in more. I really have no problem with the cliches (I mean, shoujo without cliche? Never heard of that), but if carefully handled, cliches could also be charming. Here they were not. It made this manga hard to grow attached to.

The art was good. Delicious cakes, lovely recipes. Character's looks lacked signature somehow. Yeah, that was exactly my problem with this series, it always felt like it lacked something in everything.

Shoujo tropes and weird plot twists

Yada yada yada, it's another shoujo manga with a cooking spin. There's a good boy and a bad boy, and our heroine doesn't know who's the better pick! Oh no! It's the usual contrived love story except with a kind of gutsy but totally unnecessary plot twist. On the one hand, major props to the mangaka for surprising shoujo veterans everywhere; on the other hand, why was that plot twist necessary or logical?
In any case, Kitchen no Ohimesama is the usual shoujo fluff, but it might be worth a read if you want to see one of the most bizarre and misplaced plot twists ever.

Typical shoujo stuff

Typical shoujo stuff with princes and damsel in distress and bitchy catty nail sharpening vamps.
I came because someone told me that it was a food manga, which it is not. It is shoujo plain and simple, and if it works for you, this might be an 9 or a 10.

But I can't get myself to care about who is going to luv whom, so dropping.

If Anything...

The characters are a vague copy of the Fruits baskets. Some kind of influential protagonist and her two polarized princes. Truth be told, I was expecting the dumbest waste of time when I started these series. But fortunately it was not as expected. I found myself even enjoying at some point, but there were traits in the story that debased its high points.

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
As usual it's the girl who gets on my nerves. Mary Sue. How much time should pass before you can hook up with your dead lover's brother and claim he's the REAL person you love? The 'antagonist' female is possibly more easy to love. Somehow she wins everything, succeeds everything due to her godlike luck and pure naivety.

I don't even know why I liked this story at some point. It's really annoying, but I have hate-like feelings for it.

Meh.

It's not fantastic.

It's a very typical shoujo, with very typical melodrama, with the subject being cooking. The main character wasn't particularly likable nor annoying-- she was basically a ridiculously happy and optimistic girl we see the story through. A lot of her actions were somewhat annoying, but I wasn't really expecting anything else with her personality.

The other characters are similar. The male leads, surprisingly (for a shoujo manga) are.... not much better than the female lead. One is the typical prince character with a past, and the other is probably the most typical male lead you're going to come across.

As far as character development goes, there is very little. It would not be an exaggeration to say that there is NONE at all. The plot is very fluffy with the usual shoujo melodrama, and frankly, I don't understand how it ever became so popular. There's really nothing to recommend it over other series of the genre.

As some other reviewers have said, it leaves literally no impact on you, despite the tag "tragedy." Which is probably the saddest thing ever. It goes from light-hearted to pointlessly tragic with badly conveyed emotions to...

Ugh. I don't even.

This is literally made for young (very young) girls who don't know enough to be disappointed with the mediocrity of this manga. Even die-hard shoujo fans should be wary that this manga starts about typical, but decent, then spirals down into pointlessness.

That being said, it's not terrible. As I said, it's fluffy and pointless and kind of dramatic, but that doesn't mean it's the worst shoujo manga out there. I just wouldn't waste my time (or you waste your time) reading 10 volumes of it. That and there's not that much of a plot. You always get the sense (because it's so event-driven) there's either too much or too little going on.

Entertaining, but nothing more

This manga, for the most part, was entertaining. The main girl was somewhat annoying. She was the very stereotypical, shoujo, wannabe cute but just eds up being annoying kind of girl. She cried to much, and honesty, if it weren't for the cooking and the recipes, this manga would probably not be worth the read. The art was so-so. There was something off about how this manga transitioned. It just didn't seem to flow very well. There were some events that were totally unexpected, but not in a good way. They just seemed out of place. This manga would have been better if the girl wasn't such a wuss.

A Little More...

In my opinion, I liked this manga. The art was OK, and the recipes were eligible, but I think that the topic lacked some. When I read this manga, it was going OK until Sora died. But then again, up until Sora died, the manga was pretty much lifeless. With the new upcoming character and Najika's arising love for Daichi. But I thought that the ending should have been more, unexpected. Since Najika went to visit Lavender House and asked Daichi about the spoon his rejection made me realize he was the prince. But he didn't know himself because of the accident. All in all, I liked this manga, though I still think that it needed a little more.
