Description

Kain Walker is an admired and appreciated policeman of New York by all his colleagues. A rare sort of story.

What stood out most to me with this series was the realistic approach to homosexuality-- the stigma associated with homosexuality and the hardships that come with it. The majority of yaoi manga ignore this aspect or gloss over it because realism is not what the industry calls for. But the difficulties that come with being gay are central to this series and realistic to the time period it was created in. It's a refreshing change for a BL fan who's a bit tired of the generic depthless smut.
Beyond that, the art is wonderful, if you don't mind the dated feel. Kain's actions in the beginning had me questioning whether or not I would like this series, but everything fell into place beautifully. The ending had me in tears-- happy tears at the beautiful end of an honest love story.

There is a reason that this has forty-six +10 votes. It is an amazing story.

For the art, well, it takes a little getting used to, but after the first chapter or so It really started to grow on me. Clean lines and nice proportions.

The plot was the main part. The drama made my chest hurt... It was a really powerful, touching story.

Even if you aren't a fan of yaoi, I would really recommend this story. Beautifully put together, and even though I was tempted to give in a 9 or an 8 because there are some things that don't make sense in the story, I decided to give it a 10 because it is such a unique story and so unlike other I have read.

A serious toned story

When I first began reading this saga I was tempted to set it down and give up on it. During the earlier chapters the characters are distant and unappealing, but I'm glad I hate leaving books unfinished. After the initial monotone pages, when we are introduced to the two main protagonist, it was easy to get wrapped up in the story of their emotions and lives with each other.
I think what hooked me was whereas a lot of boys love manga are lighthearted and focused on sex, NY NY took a serious approach to the genre. By the time the saga had ended, I had shed a few tears for both Mel and Kain.

I'm reading this now because someone finally picked it up again. It's okay though... the plot is really really soppy and it could do without all that melodrama.* However, it is still quite good because it really depicts what life was like in the 90s, in US when homosexuals were still heavily despised and looked down upon. And what kept me reading for a while, were Mel's and Brian's feelings for one another and the depiction of their life(minus the drama). And the main story + oneshot were all quite touching, actually. 🙂

Btw, yes... the main story starts off as some soap opera but it does get better in vols 2 to 4. This is because the story has a bitter and somewhat gritty feel, yet the plot doesn't really dwell upon the "negatives" but instead, keeps moving on.

*And note: I have nothing against a story where

1 of the main characters was sexually abused as a child but... to make him undergo so much suffering is just plain cruel. Rape, abuse and neglect by his partner, etc., etc., is just wayy too much. Throw in another closeted police partner, yet another closeted guy... who later contracts HIV and you've got a full-blown tragedy in the makings.

Btw, much of the psychology about the "serial killer"(the low-functioning psychopath) was perhaps not that accurate(as in "the letters") but the part about him having no "guilt" for his crimes, was very spot on. And so is the part about him being able to fake a "medical diagnosis" and ability to charm and lie his way out of a trial. Too bad the rest of it is "cliched crap" yanked from too many movies and books.

I was soppy towards the end, such a lovely development for the LGBT reads. I haven't quite read a yaoi with that kind of development it was almost very poetic, at times I almost felt like I was reading a novel.

One of the best I have read.

I got so mad at Kain since he was a jerk for sleeping with the guy that could be responsible for his lover's death and Mel for forgiving him so easily. But Mel is understandable coz hes so lonely. But the rest of the stories are good, like how the family plays role in this, the parents and the adopted kid. The case was hard to stomach but its good, even the murderer has a very good story. 10/10.

Now why can't all yaoi manga be like that? It was an emotional rollercoaster with a happy and tear jerking ending. It's truly a masterpiece! Love the art even though it's outdated... Perfect! I really want to read any yaoi manga similar to NYNY.

Simply so good! I nearly bawled my eyes out toward the end. It have its share of happiness, sadness, darkness, tears, etc.

The realistic situation is the driven force of this manga. Kain was afraid of someone finding out his sexuality and hides that fact of his sexual preferences. As the story goes on, we go through situations that are placed before Kain and Mel; like the meeting of Kain's parents, Mel's dark past, and the trama that Mel had to go through in the last 2 volumes.

The character development is a 10, given how sometimes petty fights or doubts can show what everyone's fears are deep inside; being that is they are being insecure or little doubts. Kain probably first came out as a playboy/jerk, but we slowly see that his devotion toward Mel was real and steadfast. Mel felt he was dirty and unworthy, and we see how he overcome his past (although some people probably won't agree with me with the "overcoming" part).

Storyplot is also a 10. Being that the manga first started in 1995, homosexuals were looked down upon and AIDS was referred to gay man disease way back then. The environment is the shaping force of this story.

Unfortnately, this manga not something smutty yaoi-fans would want to read. But I encourage you to keep an open mind and try to give this manga a try, so that you can at least have an idea of this gay couple's lifestyle and what they go through on the daily base when it comes to persecution, etc.

Am quite fond of the plot; the storyline's pretty dreamy cliched as it might be, and the emotional depths are pretty deep by itself. The whole plot is pretty close to Western soap operas / TV dramas -- albeit an idealistic/melodramatic version of it. Ended up feeling like the manga version of soap operas or romance novel. Which is good in a way, especially considering the mangaka (Akachan to Boku!)

Art's pretty good, not breathtaking but acceptable nonetheless.

But characters... I'm comparing it to Complex and unlike Complex's character-driven story, this is a plot-driven story. The depiction of the character's emotions and thoughts ain't doing them justice -- at times it seems like dolls being placed into plot and plot and plotlines and... that's too bad. It ends up pretty...ordinary.

This was the first ( and for a long period the only) yaoi manga ever published in Italy. The reason? Probably the same that all the comments noticed: it's realism, similar to a m/m western novel. And it makes me think that european and american people didn't understand (and actually don't) what shounen ai /yaoi really is.
