Description

Memory eaters live on people's memories. They are originally death messengers who remove a human's memories when they carry souls. But some of them are charmed by the beauty of the memories and become Exiles: Memory Eaters. Dio is one of them, but instead of stealing human memories like other Exiles, he earns them by helping people. One day, Dio finds a girl who is losing too many memories from Exiles. He tries to help her, but Ces, who was a model death messenger, is around her. What is he doing here?

Deliberately haunting

Who are you without your memories? Everytime you forget, you lose a bit of yourself... The author beautifully picked up that thought and spun it into a fascinating manhwa.

The art is pretty close to gorgeous, and the characters interesting. The girl irritated me in the beginning with her nonchalance at her memory lapses, but later in the story when I realised that actually it made sense.

She had been attacked as a child and was close to death, leaving her vulnerable to attacks. And a person so close to death, and continually losing her memories, can't really have a strong sense of self to get worried.

My major complaint is that the story was short; the ending was vague. But then that vagueness sort of suited the story. It leaves an opening and you can't help but hope for a sequel. It's as if the author wants this story to keep you haunting 😀

I would really recommend this story if you don't mind getting a bit frustrated at the vague ending 😀 That's the only reason I deducted one point 🙂

I agree that it was too short, however, if it had been continued it would have been so easy for it to have veered off and gotten lost in the forest of bad plots. It didn't cover some of the more philosophical ideas - how memories shape your personality ect. - deeply, but that's forgiven in something this short.
The plot premise was interesting, but mostly it was the execution that I think helped this. The actual plot itself meant that this had a definite ending and couldn't drag on. The art is nice, not what I'd class as beautiful but pretty close. The characters...they're there, they interact, and it's their actions more than anything that show their personality - no over-the-top flaws or habits that seem to play hide-and-seek.
Overall, it's a nice, light read that raises some interesting issues without going into them too deeply. Not the absolute best but worth a read.

the plot was great, the characters were interesting, they had both external conflicts as well as internal conflicts...lot's of inner demons, if you ask me...the only problem i could find is that the story was to great to be covered in 2 short volumes, it was more than it could be chewed on such short notice, in my opinion one more volume would have been great and it would have clarified lots of things, heck this would have been an awesome long term serialization, but that's all we're getting so i'm pretty happy with what i've got

long story short: it's worth the time spent to read this thing, have some patience it's great so give it a chance

PS: a sequel would be nice though...it might solve some unanswered questions and put all those mumblings to rest (well i can keep dreaming, can't i?)

PPS: somebody said earlier that one important question wasn't answered:

just how much of who we are is determined by our memories? What happens to our sense of self if we lose some/all of our memories? Can we go on living just as we had been if unimportant memories are taken? What about important ones? And what makes one memory important and another one not? my answer is:
i think that it isn't supposed to answer that question, that's the whole point, we all have to answer that one in our own way, we're supposed to put value on our own because nobody can know if a memory is important or not, that's the thing it's our memories not theirs we're supposed to set the price, not them

Great manhwa!

I was first surprised with the great quality and beauty of the art and then, with the great story. You must read paying attention or you will lose important details, specially in the relationships between the fantastic creatures. I loved how the climax was built and I got happy with the ending. No complains from me, a great reading.

Unfortunately, the short length of this series worked against it in the end.

Memory Eaters brings up a lot of thought-provoking issues: just how much of who we are is determined by our memories? What happens to our sense of self if we lose some/all of our memories? Can we go on living just as we had been if unimportant memories are taken? What about important ones? And what makes one memory important and another one not? Interesting stuff, right? Unfortunately, these issues are given only passing mention and not developed in any way after being brought up--how could they be in only two volumes?

Setting aside issues of the manhwa's lack of thematic development, the characters and plot in Memory Eaters also get short changed. For example, the poor main character spends most of the manhwa passing out or forgetting things, so she never truly becomes a character who can make decisions or react to things; she ends up feeling more like a doll that has things happen to her rather than making things happen for herself.

Similarly, the relationships between the three characters remains confusing until the final pages of the manhwa: Just who was in love with who? Was the girl in love with Dio? With Ces? Was Dio in love with the girl? Was Ces in love with the girl, or was he in love with Dio? If the relationships weren't meant to be romantic, what were they? Friendship? That needed to be clarified at a very minimum.

The manhwa does at least manage to solve one important central mystery by the end (namely, why the girl kept forgetting things), so if you read it, Memory Eaters won't leave you feeling totally confused as though it got canceled early. Rather, this is just an unfortunately short series that bit off way more than it could chew in two volumes.

what a disappointing ending

boring, eventless, predictable, disappointing ending.

beautiful art, interesting setting but too many questiond left unanswered, a plot that goes nowhere, just some hints at their feelings but nothing developed.

up until the 10th chapter I was going to give it a 8, but the last chapter was so disappointing it made the whole manwha a waste of time.

Just spectacular. The art is magnificent while the plot makes you just want more, and wishing that it hadn't end. Also making questions that just pops up when you read. One of the best manhwa I've read so far.
can't wait for more.

This has wonderful, beautiful art and the plot is super intriguing. I can't wait for more releases so I can find out more about all of the characters! I really recommend this to anyone looking for something pretty to read that's a bit mysterious, that just might leave them wanting more after every chapter 🙂
