It wasn't what I expected. I didn't like that there was a lengthy timeskip already within the first 20 pages because I had already gotten used to the idea of a cute innocent child crush type story between a ojou tsundere and her servant but all of that got thrown out. Couldn't that initial premise have been extended for longer? Obviously judging by the cover art, there would eventually be one. Oh well, there wasn't enough time for the reader to have developed an actual attachment to the setting and characters before the timeskip happened anyway, so what is the actual story like?
It's not spectacular, but it's not terrible, either. Many plot choices and characterizations are total headscratchers, though. Spoilers for the early chapters ahead, but it's nothing you won't find out within your first 15 or so minutes of reading:
So, spoiled princess who refers to herself in the third person is forced to humble herself by dwelling amongst the commoners. I was really preferring the mansion + master/servant relationship and I thought I would have to deal with yet another normal school romance setting, but it ended up being set at a confectionery instead. Let's see if this bait and switch that really subverted my expectations can pay off with something unique to tack on to the manga's name and reputation. I'm sure it would have had I garnered enough interest to finish the manga. Well, the FL Komomo still has the ML Natsu in her thoughts even after 10 years for whatever reason. To be fair, maybe he just made THAT much of an impression on her, but still. I was really digging how the story was originally setting itself up to be before the time skip. Coincidentally, as if they were starcrossed lovers, the FL just so happens to spot the ML on television and hear that he also still has her in his thoughts. Let's just roll with it. I might be being overly critical about this, anyways. As it turns out, the reason he wanted to see her again was to pay her back for how he treated him, as I observed that when he employed her at his confectionary, he treated her in the same demanding and relentless manner as she treated him in childhood, so it becomes a revenge story? Interesting, and this becomes absolutely apparent shortly after Komomo the FL goes froms riches to rags and Natsu the ML takes advantage of her vulnerable position. He's become a total jerk who definitely wants to get back at her, and this opportunity is too delicious for him to pass up. He even drops for a moment the sama honorific in favor of chan to further devalue her status. All of this happens in chapter 1. Further reading reveals more of his motivation, which is just to confirm that he desires her emotional suffering as payment for her mistreatment of him. "If it's to make you cry, I would do anything possible."
As the chapters progress, the FL still hasn't caught on to his intentions for revenge because of her lack of self-awareness in realizing how poorly she treated him all those years ago in her mansion. An utter airhead and an incompetent klutz, some of Natsu's disdain is warranted. A new character is introduced named Yuri and for whatever reason he goes from Dr. Jekyl to Mr. Hide if his food is taken so he just snaps on Komomo and attempts to assault her. I really don't know what to make of what's going on, generally.
Even if a revenge story can be entertaining to read, something of this particular execution doesn't make me want to sit through what could potentially be extended for all 5 volumes, or however long this plotline goes on for. I skipped ahead to the final chapters and noticed that the artwork changed quite dramatically. My preference goes toward the old art.
