that was one hell of a ride

Ok, where do i even begin... i saw so many people giving high ratings and good reviews, so i thought might as well give it a try. BUT SRSLY there was just too much unnecessary drama. The first few chapters were good up until Yuri and Jaerim got together, but then things went downhill.
I am honestly not giving it a lower rating just because of Yuri and Jaerim tbh, because them as characters are pretty good (AND ALSO JOOHEE BECAUSE SHE IS AWESOME AND I LOVE HER). I was pretty satisfied with their relationship at the beginning, but then the author started throwing all sorts of dramas that was becoming way too annoying to me, and when it finally ended it left a sour taste in my mouth. I couldn't even enjoy them being together properly because i just kept thinking about all the crap they had to go through ugh.
Oh and the one thing that ANNOYED THE HECK OUT OF ME THE MOST: the secondary couples. WHAT THE HECK EVEN. I guess this author has a thing for Semes that maltreat the Ukes, but then just because they "had their reasons" the Uke should just accept them back and forgive them. Istg the other couples had such unhealthy relationships that i just wanted to throw myself out of the window.
In one of the secondary couples

the Seme maltreated and started assaulting the Uke (his childhood friend) just because he didn't want to be looked down upon by his other "friends" for also being an Otaku. But guess what? The Uke forgave him and they got together, as if the assault never happened, what the actual fuck??

Then, in another couple

the Seme was a total jerk to the Uke just because he was fat and it caused a severe mental trauma on him that he became depressive and lost weight, becoming skinny and "beautiful". Then, after a time skip, the Seme met the now skinny Uke and fell for him at first sight (yeah right). Their relationship basically only revolved around them liking each other's outer appearance and, although the Uke was feeling insecure about the Seme liking him for real or just liked his looks and if he would leave him if he became fat again, they never addressed the issue, ugh

And last, the 3rd couple

was between that fake-ass Ex-student council president that had an obsessive behaviour towards Yuri's childhood friend (also Joohee's brother), that he did all sorts of horrible things towards Yuri and Jaerim out of jealousy. He clearly liked Joohee's brother but then the author never adressed it (again) and he simply vanished and never appeared in the later chapters, like???

Tl;dr if you're looking for A WHOLE LOT of drama, bullying and psychological/mental issues then this one may be good for you. But if you're looking for a light-hearted and fluffy shounen-ai, this definitely ain't it.

lots of triggers such as extreme bullying and assault with not the best execution and storytelling. still, i found story interesting as i wanted to see how bullying and trauma were explored. the main couple was the foundation of this story and they could've had more solid development, which the story did progress towards until the last 20-odd chapters. i truly did not care for the heeno and aerak storyline; probably the weakest and most toxic couple in the story. yumin and dohoon could've been explored better as with jaerim and yuri. what even happened with dunno and kang in the end?? ayeon and woori were super cute! also my girl joohee?? an absolute angel. best girl! deserves her own storyline! i happened to quite like the art style. it isn't the most conventional style but it worked really well for this story. with better execution, this story would've been a solid 9+ rating for me. overall, recommended even with all the triggers.

Trash with good art

This one definitely doesn't hold up dang. I read this a long while ago. I vaguely remember liking it so I decided to check it out again.

It's trash, for real. Waste of 85 chapters gaddem. The red head male lead is frequently a fool. The secondary couples are chock-full of abusers and why are so many characters near-rapists?
What is with so many character sliding with Yuri when he's clearly in the wrong?
No relationship in this was worth the read, they all just become more and more irritating the further in you go. The main issue with 1 of the couples wasn't ever even addressed! How can a dude call you a pig, you develop an eating disorder and an appearance trauma, you subsequently date the guy and none of that ever comes up?? The author didn't even attempt to deal with it and that was literally their main conflict.

Frankly it was much worse than I remembered. It was a manageable story at the beginning and there were certainly some cute moments here and there but it def wasn't enough to outweigh the stupid. Toxic couples can be fun in fiction sometimes, but these were just insane. MC deserved better tbh. Christ Yuri was annoying.

Why torment this pure cinnamon roll (=Yuri) so much?

I started reading this manhwa thinking it's going to be like Aitsou no Daihonmei. Unfortunately, this story is very deep and sad and I feel like the writer wanted to make the korean readers, who are way too conservative and hard-to-please by nature, to give this gay love a chance and let it happen at least under special circumstances. That's why while reading this story, the reader is first introduced to the main characters, then learn more about their tragic past, then see that every other person in the story is superficial and uber-selfish, to the point that they hurt the main characters when being nice to them conflicts with their personal gain. There are many instances in this manhwa in which the reader feels so much for the characters and invests so much in their story, that they'll lose it with all these unfair things being done to them. At least that's how I felt.

Just to give you an example, the seme of the main couple is an orphan and since he doesn't want to spend the money his parents left him, he lives a simple life and he works part-time to save these money until he goes to college (so that he won't have to worry about his tuition). His school doesn't allow part-time jobs but since everyone knows his background, they let him be. However, many students reported him everyday regardless, to put pressure to the school authorities to let them get part-time jobs as well. The school finally contacted him, asking him to stop working, so in ch 62, he gets drunk and opens up to his lover, saying that, unlike everyone else, when he faces hard times, he has nobody to comfort him when he's sad (because he's an orphan), As I read those lines, I was this
--> <-- close to lose my shit for real.

To sum up, the story is very engaging and makes a strong impression on the readers. It's bittersweet. If I had to spot a weak point, that would be the extensive use of sloppily-drawn chibis that appeared up until the first half of the series. Pus, I wanted to see more of the main couple and the side couples when everything was resolved and they started dating without any drama.

i binge read this series, & lemme just say i LOVED it. Im normally not 2 crazy about manhwas but lately I've been on a kick 😛

4 starters, the characters r a breath of fresh air. Nobody is who they seem to be! I mean sure "uke" MC pissed me off time & again but he's the bravest I've seen of his kind! even in the scenes where he gets the snot beaten out of him-& there are many!!

This isn't like every other shounen ai out there w their usual twists n turns & little character development. No, ur gonna really FEEL 4 the characters-u'll fall in love w the side characters, cry 4 the bullied & hate the uber superficial ones.
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND U GIVE Never Understand A TRY BC THIS BEAUTIFUL&TRAGIC TALE WILL MAKE U LAUGH, CRY & FEEL THE LOVE..

SIDE NOTE: best guy is jaerim's chill af best friend who just doesn't give a damn and doesn't do anything mm..dreamy ;3

that blue haired guy was going to be THE best guy if it werent for the third thing he did. I've never had so many jump back and forth hate/love feelings for a character -_- sheesh

I love when love interests aren't always conventual. This series really struck a cord with me and it's very sincere. It doesn't feel exploitive of its male love interests. It doesn't present anyone as perfect.

Don't even bother with this one. Its not even about the toxicity of each "relationship". At some point its just pure stupidity and malice, I cant explain it any other way. It starts ok i guess, but for the life of me, not a single character is redeemable. Not even the "ugly" protagonist makes sense at times.
Just don't bother with it. That is all.

This is so hilarious 'cause I only created an account to post a comment... Well, the story may not be perfect or a masterpiece but it's fine, I also have my disappointments with it like for eg when Jaerim just forgave so easily to Ayeon (dk if his name is correct) for r4pe him. In addition, the secondary characters. Not all the stories were good-taken, but you must to see through it and analyze them. Yes, they're toxic, even Yuri my babe. At the end, it's just fiction, this possibly cannot happen in a real high school environment (or maybe yes?). My dudes, what I'm trying to say is, just enjoy it tf up, it's like a manga story. It's good, I could say I loved it, it has parts really touching and relatable, the art was amazing I can see Yuri's face all the time 🤤... Get what I'm saying, right?
Oh, and I wanted to know more about the ex president and Dunno (I think that's his name)

HEEEY, I have to make a correction, Jaerim actually said to Ayeon that he maybe will never forgive him... That's good, he kept talking to him tho. However, I think they'll never gonna meet each other.

haruny's comment mentions everything worth mentioning. You don't get to see much of the main couple because it's just cliché drama after drama after drama. There are a lot of unhealthy relationships and the way problems are addressed is very rushed and unrealistic. Everything that happens makes it incredibly hard to build an attachment to the characters. Personally, I wasn't invested in any of the couples.

The artwork is so creative in this one. Especially the facial expressions and transitions. Its funny because the characters are drawn beautifully with detail one moment and in the next they'll look like an emoji. Really fun to scroll through.
The plot was decent, but it was a pretty typical shounen ai. I usually hate when every male in the story is gay, but in this webtoon, each of the characters had an interesting background/personality so it wasn't too much of an issue. A good variety of issues were covered between the characters like prejudice, bullying, weight issues, depression, etc.

Personal opinion on some of the characters:
I didn't really like the story about Aerak. He spent so much time feeling horrible, and working hard to lose weight after being called an animal by Hino. Then it turns out that he’s just as superficial as him. I didn't really see a point in including a story like that other than to show how superficial people can be in real life. It was just annoying to read..
On another note, I felt like Jaerim was written to be a little too useless. For a majority of the story he was indecisive and a coward. However, the dialogue towards the end when Jaerim and Yuri were in the river was so lovely that it kind of made up for all the frustration. He said something that anyone would want to hear from a loved one in times of distress and it really hit the heart.
