Description
This is the story of a terrible kidnapping and gang rape crime committed against a 17-old-girl, by 17-year-old boys. Why did such a thing happen? Why was no one able to prevent it?

In the beginning, high school boys Hiroki and his friend Takashi are rescued from bullying by a notorious gangster, Miyamoto. At first, they are thrilled to be under his protection, and cheerfully run off anyone who threatens them with the mere mention of Miyamoto's name. Soon, they learn that there is a lot more to being in Miyamoto's gang than just being protected. In return, they're expected to offer loyalty ... More...

I do not know, I did not like it at all, I thought it will be like documentary stuff but no alternative ending, also not covering all punishments that been done to her.

Nothing shocking compared to the real story (IRL) i was expecting to be shocked or disgust.
the author of the manga may have been afraid that his manga is not selling and made a soft story to have more sales no one likes the bad end.
creating characters that do not exist in IRL history to invent a happy ending is very disappointing like the twin sister and other characters.
it's not a bad manga just a bad adaptation that does not reflect the reality that is hard to accept.
but people prefer the happy endings.

Reading through the other posts and although the manga is tragic, i dont think it compares to the real torture junko endured.
Either way, i recommend this manga and i feel that junko's true story needs more attention especially since the real ending wasnt as peachy and rainbows as its manga counterpart's.

A story about group mentality, an insane bully and his lackeys. Immoral, out-of-control and self-centred kids devoid of any empathy. Some unbelievably incompetent parents as well. (Mizuno's)

This manga making me lose all hope for humanity, sure some are good, but the good one are often incompetence and hardly make something matter, sure in manga we see police and her sister do something, but in real event none of those happen everyone know but to afraid or to lazy to find out, it happen under their nose for god sake it feel like entire neighbor should be lit on fire.
Any way in manga perspective I think the author done great job presenting all human ugliness, and how useless sometimes people are, sure it have better ending but the damage is done no one can recover from that. This manga is not for the weak it can make you depress, you should avoid it.

Why has nobody said anything about Mizuno's mom?

It was painful having to read it knowing that it was based off of a true story. I kept thinking, how could people be so crule and do such horrendous things to others. Looking at the other reviews my thoughts twords this manga have already been covered.
I felt sympathetic twords Hiroki, but mostly angry that he never spoke up. I think he should've said something, but if he actually did (depending on how far in he was) he would've most likley have gotten killed by Miyamoto, and the only good of doing that would be dying with honor and a good moral compass.
Another thing I would like to mention is that other than Miyamoto and the delinquents, there is another character in the story who I am completely infuriated and disgusted with; Mizuno's mom! She sees Sachiko, in the decrepit state she's in. It's apparent to her what her son plus his delinquent have been doing, and she does nothing. She even takes the abuse from his son and even witnesses her husband getting beatn up by him.
She had probably the best opportunity to alert the police with little to no consequences other than being sad that your sons a monster and is in jail. No, instead she doesn't go to the athorities, but goes about her daily routine, guilt-ridden. The same can be said for the other characters, that they should have reported this to the police but out of all the people she had it the easiest. I would have liked to see her have at least has some punishment in the end.

The other reviews (the positive ones i mean) have already said it all. Thank you TanpopoHana for the timeline.
Junko Furuta´s story is a cautionary tail that need to be told over and over again and the art is good and fits the subject matter. The only criticism i have is the ending. I wont call it upbeat but it still it is misguided in my eyes.
If you ride the road of nihilism you have to crash into a wall at the end of the ride not hop over it. If you want to read a manga about the failure of humanity read this. This certainly puts all the vast mountains of manga and hentai that treat rape as fanservice and smutty trash like Bitter Virgin in perspective. One last thing. Did you know that a hentai doujinshi and a real japanse porno about Junko Furuta exists. Maybe even more ? Apparently we learned nothing.

I basically skimmed this entire manga because it really pisses me off because most of the characters here are a fucking trash, even lower than cockroach, basically a waste of oxygen.
I also read many comments below, and here is my take on this issues:
1. I understand completely the underlying message behind this manga was to touch our empathy as a human being by telling a real life story like this, but I personally as a reader did not enjoy this kind of manga. There's no relatable protagonist. All of them are fucking scumbags, and I have to read the process of torture happened minute by minutes as I read through every pages, and watching the poor girl suffered because of it. Justice wasn't being served as well in the end. The manga real to the point of "too real" that reading this manga is equal reading a breaking news in your newspaper about torture and rape. It wasn't fun at all, and yeah it made me want to brutally murder these people.
That leads me to the second point:
2. I am reffering to SwallowedGod and TanpopoHana who also commented below
I'm not as much as trying to gain sympathy to other people like TanpopoHana , yes, girl was raped , tortured, and killed, but there's no need to constantly remind people all over again, nobody wants to hear that shit. Sympathy is a useless emotion unless you actually being able to do something and not being armchair warrior and constantly telling other people how they supposed to have sympathy to those victims. It's plain annoying and full of hypocrisy, because you didn't actually do anything to solve the problem , and rather just sympathy gaining.
SwallowedGod , on the other hand, view humanity as a trash, predator who prey others that are weaker than them. I couldn't agree more. But it doesn't mean that we, as a human, can't suppress our own desire to kill, if we just let humanity act as they should be doing, we couldn't survive anymore in this planet, because we would be constantly murdering each others until we satisfy our own inner desire, which is impossible to be satisfied to begin with.
There's a reason why Colosseum, back in roman era, where we watched a guy killing other guy , couldn't be tolerated anymore in this modern civilization. We are going step forward leaving our "animal instinct" , from purely physical creature to spiritual creature.
That's why I always believe in a properly implemented "Golden rule" : One should not treat others in ways that one would not like to be treated .

This manga is absolutely wonderful and the art is beautiful! Plot is good, characters are amazingly realistic (yes, there are people like that fat mofo in the world). The artist is so good with expressions they don't need words. I like the excitement this manga brings "will she survive", "will her sister find her" etc. I could praise this all night really! Even the delinquents had their own "justice, morale-code" and it's interesting to see how their way of thinking differ from one another.

I'll give this 9/10 because this has a happy ending -.-

A better ending than this turned out in real life....
As for Swallowed God, You don't know what the hell you are talking about, stop spewing self pitying filth. You may love killing, you may think nothing of it. That doesn't mean others do. Humanity isn't a bunch of saints nor is it a bunch of depraved killers, you lost your reason at some point in Iraq, time to get it back.
