Description

From Seven Seas:
In a future Japan, long after an environmental catastrophe, Alpha the android runs a small café in a seaside town. As she wonders if her absent owner will ever return, she stands witness to the twilight of humanity with coffee, a slice of watermelon, and the sound of her moon guitar. Alpha and her fellow residents enjoy the melancholy beauty of life, even as the end approaches.

Never thought Post-Apocalyptic world would be this beautiful

What would you think if you heard the word 'Post-Apocalypse'? meteor shower?, nuclear wasteland?, hurricanes?, new york covered with snow?, suicide virus?, machine army?(with sunglasses), zombie army?, or 4th Bush administration?

it's obviously different take on what Al Gore said. The place where the characters live was a big city once, but the big city part is drowned, maybe because Gore landed a jet in the arctic, melted its ice.

the story is about a humanoid robot left alone in a cafe by her owner, facing day-to-day life in almost deserted post-apocalyptic village, making friends, learning a thing or two; don't expect any romance(there's hints tho) or action here.

nothing sad here, but i almost cry when it's ends, and i never cry to mangas before, even sad one, maybe because you grew love with every characters, even to those who just passed briefly every scenes, making it very hard to say farewell to them, and prove the power of character development over cheesy sad lines.

but the ending is frigginly amazing; times passed, the earth, once a festive of humanity, plagued by greed and lust for power, grew quieter each seconds passed, with less and less people around. maybe if post-apocalyptic future is this beautiful, i don't mind living in one.

the art isn't very good, but in a strange way, frigginly beautiful, helped by the narrative, poetic approach of the story, i can almost feel the winds blowing, the smell of the grasses in the morning, the cold, freezing temperature in winter nights, or the hot and sweaty days in summer...

i also see it as criticism on how we face Global Warming. the characters in this manga, which is the possible reflection on how might our descendants live, just live their day-to-day life without pointlessly whining that someday, earth will kill them all. Gore said they would be blaming us for this, would they?

and the night of humanity, may it be a peaceful age.

^ the above is the word that seems to best describe this series. It is simply impossible to get worked up while reading this.

It reads like the diary of an exceptionally sweet and gentle young lady, full of emotion, insight, empathy, and wonder. We the readers are able to grasp at an easygoing, simple life, in which we take our time to appreciate the details. This may be the most realistic work of sci-fi I have ever read.

The attention to minor details is one of the things I really enjoyed about this series, from the very beginning. The mangaka's ability to ingrain such detail into the scenery with such a simplistic style of artwork, is simply astounding. The mangak seems to mimic Tolstoy's style of painting a picture that allows one to see the whole picture quite easily through the minute details.

One thing I must say is that I get bored easily, and the pace of this series was just too slow for me to handle. Nothing ever really 'happens', but are our lives really that eventful? I suppose that's the point, to an extent, and I've redefined my scope of 'slice of life' using this series as a baseline. Boring? Mebbe. Relaxing? Quite, if you're not too impatient.

If you decide to start reading this, don't rush through the read. This series is not meant to be read in a hurry; its Sunday afternoon reading material. A slow, leisurely pace is what you want here, one that matches the lifestyle of the characters in the series.

Arguably the finest slice of life story to have ever been told

I have read manga for 20 years and about 10 years ago I got my hands of this manga series. It completely change my entire perspective on what I seek today when I read. The very simplistic theme and nature of the art and story is something that I to this day have not found anywhere else. And while simplistic it gave me a very profound nostalgic and wistful feeling which I can not entirely explain. It is in my opinion one of the great manga works of my generation and arguably the finest slice of life story to have ever been told.

It's my first comment here.
My heart warms up when I remember this manga. It's my favorite, and very probably I'll have it with myself for my whole life.
I fell in love completly with mono no aware after reading this one, I just love the sensation.
Since it's the dawn of humanity, it has this melancholy feel. Which is very good, and it feels as good as dark coffee. Your mood is essential to read this one, because the pace is slow and everything. But it's just too human, you must read. But don't rush your read or you'll not enjoy it.

And don't forget this manga is awesome because of its slowness, and we can make a parallel with our lives about this, because since the pace is slow, the humans are still alive for a great time before the end.

I just could feel things in a different way, this bitter happiness.

A sublime and nostalgic Masterpiece

This work of art evoked emotions and provoked thoughts that i never knew were possible from merely reading a manga. Words can do it no justice. Wait, actually i think 'silent yet incredibly eloquent' might cut it..... Then again it might not. I'm truly fortunate to have stumbled across this gem. Read this if its the only manga you do.

Just read it again. Beautiful....just beautiful.

Nice clean art + interesting vignettes = heartwarming manga. Ashinano depicts glimpses into Alpha's life in a way that truly captivates and engages the readers. No matter which genre you are a fan of, I highly recommend this to all manga readers.

There's really no other way to describe this series. The art isn't the best out there, but it's still good, and while simple, it's not simple to the point of lacking. The story is relaxing, peaceful, and well presented, and will leave you feeling the most satisfied you've been in a long time. Almost guaranteed.

There's lots of other stuff to say, but reading the series is better than reading my review of it. What are you doing? Get it, now.

A feeling of nostalgia

To be honest, I found this pretty boring at first, and I was really bothered by the fact that the protagonist is supposedly a robot, but didn't seem anywhere like one (there is a difference between a robot who seems so human that you forget that she's a robot at all, and a character that never seemed like a robot in the first place).

But somewhere along the line, without knowing when exactly, the characters grow on you. Before I knew it I was tearing up at the inexorable passage of time, and feeling sad as the series neared its conclusion, as though I had just seen a whole life pass me by. It is a feeling of heartbreak, and yet life moves on, beautiful and peaceful as ever.

Ahh. With the right music and the right setting, reading this series is like being free. Don't read it too fast, but keep the pages turning fast enough to be swallowed up into Alpha's world. Extraordinary penmanship and direction, the author knows how to use every aspect of the general concept of manga without using too much dialogue. Because with too much dialogue the reader can get confused, but without enough the reader wouldn't know what to make of it.

Not a trace of Malice or Vengeance or anything else you'd expect a premise to have in order to make top rank (e.g Berserk or Monster). But it just goes to show that a series can go nowhere but still have a desired destination. And after all, it just seems blissful.

diverse, unique and calming

The twelve years it took to complete the story clearly show themselves in the quality of the plot.
Twists are few, but when they do happen they always give a feeling of immersion in exactly the right amounts. To me, this is the first time I've come across a good Slice Of Life story, that stays interesting for more than 10 chapters. That said, I read this in one sitting, so I never really got distracted, like those who might have read this over the course of a decade.

This work easily deserves a 10 out of 10 for the depth behind the plot, the very well done implementation of the small things in everyday life, without getting boring, ever. The view the author gives us of this post-apocalyptic world is narrow, yet amazingly wide and bright behind the scenes. I think you can really call the mood magical, even if this story is at maximum only slightly mystical.
A masterpiece of a quality you will only rarely come across. When reading, remember that this was meant to be a Slice Of Life manga, so you won't feel the tension so common to mainstream manga. If you, however, can appreciate the calmness and bittersweet contentedness/satisfaction a good Slice-Of-Life spreads, you'll never forget this reading experience.
