For what I read on internet, Shutoheru (シュトヘル) means demon in mongolian, the official name in romaji in japanese is Shutohel, look here ( http://goo.gl/YKxXeV ) the production page name "shutohel" appears above the japanese title. (production notes were published on February edition of Gekkan spirits of this year)

Superb

Only 17 chapters yet I am instantly addicted. I love the premise of this series, and I love semi-historical epic manga like Berserk, Vinland Saga, Dangu (Shaman Warrior), and Mugen no Juunin (Blade of the Immortal). Shut Hell just added to my list. I can see this becoming an excellent masterpiece already.

The premise with the modern characters and gender bending made gave Shut Hell a very interesting and unique twist to its historical setting that got me hooked. The three layers of the plot (the modern, the events after Shut Hell's revival, and the retelling of Shut Hell and Yurul's past) makes excellent story telling that makes me like this series even more.

The characters are amazing, especially Shut Hell. I love that expression on her face that's not quite a frown, not quite a smile, and not quite a sneer, but something in between. Man, does Itoh Yu know how to design her characters! Alfald, Harabal, Yurul. I just stare at them for hours and wonder how she how she designed and drew them.

I love the action sequences, I've never seen anything quite like it. Given Shut Hell is female, there are a lot of acrobatics involved which is very different from the masculine actions in the series mentioned previously. Most of the actions are depicted realistically which makes it even more awesome. And I just enjoy unentangling the complex twist of action that Shut Hell and her prey are engaged in.

Shut Hell has everything that I like it in: wolves, tigers, blood and gore, China, redheads with swords, and a good little bit of history and geography.

Shut Hell is similar to The Twelve Kingdoms (both being about China and redheaded heroines with swords), yet very different at the same time. The only thing that mars Shut Hell is the god-awful translations. Its so bad that I have to ignore the speech bubbles and make up my own dialogue. Hopefully somebody else who actually knows the language picks up the project soon.

Shut Hell

Shut Hell is a very unique manga that deals with many ideologies pertaining to both historical and modern day topics. It gives the reader another perspective on war, race, and life itself. Unlike other manga, Shut Hell is very realistic yet very idealistic at the same time. It delivers a striking display of art, presenting ideas that makes the readers think. It's conjures a clash between ideology and reality to focus on the bigger picture by viewing it through the smaller picture. A truly magnificent peace of art filled with rich and powerful display of character and stature. I would recommend people who are looking for something new and outside of manga norm to read Shut Hell. It is by far, one of my favorite manga of all times rating at 6/10 which is the second highest rating that I ever gave.

Good Work

Somehow I am reminded of Total War series from SEGA. I am pretty sure the author have played this game and copied some scenes from it. I apologize if I offended, but that's just a minor impression I got while reading this manga. I can tell, it's a good work and interesting like many other historical mangas; only thing that bogs me is it dealt with Mongol, which I personally feel awkard toward the author's approach about them. I don't like the fact that there are some excessive emphasis on cruelty of Mongol leadership with too much aspects on Japanese war ideology (or mangaka war ideology if that's more appropriate) into completely different culture. These contradict from what I read from some books on Mongol.

This series can become a true epic or an incredible mess.

What is reality in this series is very much in doubt in the beginning. Ignore a few details and it is fairly straightforward though.
Spoiler (highlight to view)
Discount all portions prior to the hanging scene and this really isn't that complicated. IF they do turn up to be relevant then all bets are off on how this one will conclude.

Guy in the present meets a girl who plays an instrument. He apparently wakes up as a naked women being hanged. As a women he goes on the run with a little boy that looks like the girl. While hiding, he hears the story behind his body and the series goes off from there.

Shut hell is surprisingly feminine for a raging homicidal schizophrenic with possible multiple personalities. She never gives off the feeling of a man with breasts so much as that of a crazed girlfriend out for revenge. Quite ironic since Shut Hell may very well be a man with breasts (or a girl who turned into a guy) in the first place. Gore, nudity and tragic overtones. Not for kids with uptight parents.

When I started this manga, I had no idea how much I would like it, but the character of Shut Hell is so fucking amazing, I just love when people suddenly "snap" in a manga (like for example Takamura against Hawk in Hajime no Ippo) and Shut Hell is all the time in that state.
So. Fucking. Cool.

I got hooked on this from the start and I just have to say, it is brilliant.
As previously mentioned the art is great and I love the characters plus i'm a sucker for stories like this or Chunchu with an "Evil One" in them.
Can't stop smiling and I hope this goes on for many volumes.

Edit: As of chapter 13 this manga is Fucking Awesome.

I don't really know how to explain this, but at least I can say it's a good manga. It's among the "main character gets transported to the past" kind of historical manga, but there are some twists that I had not seen before among this type of manga.

The art is to my liking, and that is always a plus.

Tangentially historical manga

Beautiful art accompanies an interesting story. The setting is the actual rise of the Mongols in the 13th century, although many events and characters are reimagined to fit a more adventure and action oriented plot. The main weakness of this manga is that it doesn't spend any time on the history it's borrowing from, which I think is often more interesting than the characters in the story.
