Meh

This is only my third novel and just today caught up to chapter 2642. The novel is readable but there are some points that make it hard to give this more than just a "meh" rating.

PROS:

- It's entertaining despite its flaws, but only if you let some chapters accumulate and then read.

- Lots of violence, some might say unnecessarily violent, but it's on the pro column for me.

CONS:

- Content is often lacking for overly padded chapters, I assume the reason is to meet a quota or to extend the life of the novel, but it is not a pleasant feeling when you have to dissect a chapter to find any content in it. It got to the point where i used a chrome extension (Custom JavaScript 2) to highlight dialogue and certain keywords so that i could skim through the chapter and ignore all the added fluff, and still i found a lot of repetitive and unnecessary dialogues and descriptions.

- Math is broken. The scale of things never make sense and big numbers are used for no reason. Sometimes they are in a building and someone gets punched or kicked "tens of thousands of meters" away, that like 6 to 60 miles. One time they were in a maze and the crowd that the mc was talking within one room in the maze was described being made up of tens of millions of ppl. Maybe I'm just not creative enough but i find it hard to visualize what I'm reading when i read shit like that.

- The story is predictable and repetitive, tho from my limited experience this is common in cultivation novels.

- The mc makes some questionable choices, sometimes they are questionable because they lack common sense and other times they are morally questionable. The morally questionable ones don't bother me as much as the ones that make him seem like he is mentally challenged.

- He collects teachers like they are Pokemon, but i don't think any of his teachers have ever thaught him anything.

- Side characters get left behind, this is true of most cultivation novels, but that doesn't stop it from being a negative. It is hard to get attached to characters when you know they won't be around 2 arcs down the road.

COMPARISONS:

The other two novels that i have read are Peerless Martial God and Tales of Demons and Gods, and i have enjoyed both of those more than this one.

TDG, unlike MGA, was doing a pretty good job of bringing most of the original cast along for the ride, some characters were left behind or forgotten, but for the most part, they are still around and at a comparable level to MC. TDG is less than 500 chapters in so tough to do a fair comparison, but so far TDG comes ahead. Unfortunately, the releases there is down to 1 chapter per month so I've put that down and will pick it back up in a decade or so, unless whatever the author's issue is gets resolved.

PMG is a lot more similar to MGA, but there is less filler/fluff in the chapters, a good percentage of it is content that moves the story forward. PMG also suffers from leaving behind characters, especially lovers. In MGA at least the MC's lovers tend to keep up or at least show up often. In PMG aside from the main wife, the MC's lovers go MIA and peek their head out once every blue moon for the tiniest bit of screen time. PMG is already completed in the native language and gets 40 new translated chapters a week. The current translation progress is ~ 1260/2500 [edit: many of the "left behind characters" in PMG are resurfacing]

Forced story with bastard mc

Mc is the embodiment of shitty character, the story is forced to make sense what mc do and grant his wish, and the other characters are unreasonable alien (they don't do what people do, they don't think what people think, welp... they don't have brain to think)

caution: violent

As the review says Chu Feng is a ruthless to the point of being a sociopath, but like Fist of the North Star the people he kills without batting an eyelid are in no way portrayed sympathetically they are all just mwahaha villains who will kill and attack people for not much reason. At least the MC waits until they offend him to attack. You get the feeling that the world itself doesn't really care about morality as the people cheering for him where cheering for the antagonist and deriding him before he proved he was stronger than them. Likewise his friends are also usually shown to be just as much ruthless sociopaths as he is.

Other than that it's a pretty generic, simple series where the MC is a typical shounen protag 90% of the time with odd exception of the aforementioned ruthlessness. Really the only reason why anyone should read this is because of the MC's sadistic nature because otherwise it's pretty bland. People that don't like their MC killing people have no business reading this or any title in the Xianxia/Xuanhuan genre.

trigger warning: As for the rape he has done it three times out of the 1400+ chapters currently translated. Sure three times is three times too many, but the guy done worse things to people before the third one happens rather than appalled you'll probably be laughing since out of all the murders, genocides, and tortures the second rape scene is the only action that gave him genuine remorse. The third rape scene happened because "his torture methods would not be effective on her" so he had to take back his oath to never rape again to effectively torture her to payback the brutal torture she put him through the previous chapters. Compare this to the 8-9 entire families (men, women, children, pets) he wiped out without a care and you realize the rape scenes are blown out of proportion in comparison.

hot blooded

I am going to be blunt, the MC is quite hot blooded. That makes for a high paced, morally greyish plot. The title says it all, martial god asura, key word, asura. Now this novel naturally paints the MC in a slightly better light than he is. And because he is strong and confident, he attracts ladies. Now if you can get past the rather simple plot, completely action based pacing and lack of morals by all characters ( say for a few people, very few) you will have an alright time. If you can't, don't bother. Some people give a poor review, but that is simply because they could not suspened their disbelief (a key point to fiction) and often let their personal bias effect their reviews. Objectively speaking MGA is alright. It is not spectacular, the writing is alright, the author does occasionally foreshadow, and also slows down the pace for rather important plot points, but other than that it is go go go. Making the plot advancement seem a bit inorganic, and artificial. I would rate this about a 3 or 3.5. 4 is really pushing it, 1 is just really a bias by others. It isn't completely trash, so I don't think a 1 is fair, even if you didn't like it. It goes without saying you shouldn't read any one the 1 reviews as they are incredibly biased, and really paint the novel far worse than it has.
Honestly give it a try, by chapter 100~ you will know if you like or not.
As by then, the MC is pretty set in his ways.

absolute trash mc

when I read the reviews, I got curious about this LN. so I decided to give it a try.
it started out as any other xianxia. useless mc that has no talent. got bullied by arrogant jackass. suddenly finds a hack and turns the table around.
after this the story diverge from other LN. You see after mc gains power he becomes 10 time worse scumbag than those who previously bullied him. his arrogance starts up almost all of his altercations.
I don't know about other readers, but when I read a story with a protagonist. I expect to connect with the mc. when he falls down I sympathise with him. when mc triumphs, I cheer fow him.
in mga, I don't connect with the mc at all and neither did I wanted to. instead I kept hoping for mc to die a very painful death every chapter. but since the author won't be killing the mc. I dropped the LN.
maybe I will pick up the epilogue. to see if my wish gets fulfiled or not?

A Cultivation Odyssey..

Rating: 8.5  / 10.0
Martial God Asura gets a worse reputation than mostly anything I've encountered in recent times, and it's all over a few generic genre tropes. Xuanhuan is all about cultivation in an world much more unforgiving than ours, if you want Shounen battles than read Japanese LN's.

First off, no reincarnation in this novel. This is a story of someone growing up with great power and a plethora of enemies along the way, albeit quite a few are made by him. This shows as the character grows up along the way with the reader, either battle wise, common sense or worldly desires, you see the bullied kid, the rash hot-blooded teen, and the more calm headed mid twenties expert. The foundation for the cultivation as well the the world building is some of the most solid I've read in the genre. Names translate smooth and these never get too chaotic in the upper tiers.

He may be considered ruthless, but he is a kid that could kill with a flick of the wrist and I know MANY people today would be worse than this kid with his type of power. Our ancestors were worse than this kid, read history and you will read truly gruesome stuff. This is a world with no technology or science, In our age it's unacceptable but 200 years ago it was commonplace, so quit looking from inside the box all day.

Chu Feng, our MC was a kid born in the upper realms with what seems to be quite the doting father, he wanted his son a great path in a tough world so tweaked his bloodline. Which inadvertently got them kicked out of the realm, and he made a plan to send his son to a weak area to quietly work his way stronger. MC unravels his family's past while the story goes on, all the while killing the people who've wronged him and his friends, also meeting a few females. It's not for the weak hearted as the aforementioned rape or the tragedies that strike our MC while he forges his path through an unforgiving world. A tale filled with beasts, spirits, humans, and gods, and one guys path towards ascension.

It may not be the best LN I've read but top 2 Xuanhuan novel for sure, and one that's actually helped me get a a firmer grasp of China's view of Multiverse and cultivation as it's structured that well. As not only enjoying was enough, helping me enjoy future novels surprised even me and reason I fully recommend this novel.

Decent read.

This one is very hard to rate. So before doing so, I'll address the elephant in the room. Rape.

You may have gathered already from the various reviews and enraged posts that this novel includes several rape scenes. I'm also quite shocked by the latest one. They seem pointless too. There's just something wrong with author's head. At first he tried to explain or justify the need for it. Lately it's a simple "they deserve it".
I won't defend the author, nor any of the situations in question. This is a fabricated story, so I don't take it to heart.

Is it as apalling as people make it out to be? Sure. But I do question this kind of view as well. So endless killings, mass murder, torture, mutilations are okay, but at rape you draw the line? At one point he eats a person alive. You can condemn the character and author all you want, but don't draw the line at rape. It pales in comparison to the cruelty and gore involved in this story. Therefore complaining about just one such element isn't rational.

As should be obvious at this point the whole setting and world depicted are pretty grim. The story is driven by pointless slaughter, vengeance and crude violence. You have to be thick-skinned for this one.

It can be enjoyable and exciting at times. Mostly however - and I do have to point out - it's using a simple trick by means of power-ups to create a false sense of excitement. There's not one story arc that is memorable for its writing or twist. You're being fed the same theme/trope over and over again. The old and already conquered villains/antagonists tend to blend together to a kind of blur, as they're all pretty much the same. Basically disgusting evil person doing evil deeds and far stronger than current MC level until he powers up enough by finding a legacy/technique/skill/item while overcoming some test or trial by way of plotshields to raise his power so he can slaughter [put current antagonist here] and his whole family/clan/sect.
This is what this novel is about. There is no grey area. The antagonists are evil, so MC is just by punishing them. Be it by humiliation, torture, mutilation, slaughter, rape, cannibalism or worse. This is probably some unsolved psychological trauma of the author at work here.

Anyhow I'm still rating it decent. That false sense of the weak triumphing over evil powerful villain? Well it's enjoyable.

To truly understand, Just read the novel

Mostly all of these Chinese novels are based on the law of the jungle and chaos. You can get away with everything as long as you have the power to do so,now imagine what happens?

This is a regular satisfying novel. It has revenge taking, ruthless killing, plot armor, sex scenes, power ups, awesome fights, some good quotes. Basically everything you want in a good novel.
To dive deep into a different world adventure in the eyes of the MC and enjoy when he takes revenge against some arrogant people or stealing from the strong and laughing at them.
It is pure adulterated fun.

Some would say this novel is bad because of the plot holes or rape and a many other things, but in my opinion it's very low key compared to any psychological manga you can find out there and I would even go as far as saying it is pretty Vanilla compared to some stuff I have seen.
Just take it with a pinch of salt and give it also it is important to remember: this is fiction, Don't take it so hard.
