The Best in Jump's Line Up in HxH's Absense

It's simply great fun. Over the top powerful antagonists, quick yet detailed development for the main cast, and a side cast of characters that the author does NOT forget about unlike other mainstream Shounen I know. It can get surprisingly graphic for a Shounen. It very much emulates classic titles like Fist of the North Star and Dragonball. The inspiration from those 2 series along with One Piece is abundantly clear.

If you like high level battles as in above Naruto/Fairy Tail/Bleach levels of power, you'll like this.
If you like Fist of the North Star, Dragonball or One Piece, you will very likely enjoy this.
If you like World building, you'll LOVE this as not even One Piece compares in this aspect.
If you like ridiculous Monsters and Beasts, you'll love this.
If you like thorough but fast pacing you will like this.
If you want a non Bishounen main protagonist and cast, you will like this.
If you like Cooking manga but also like Action/Adventure, you will love this.

A few quick notes: There most certainly is a female presence in this manga, but it does weigh heavily towards the males. Much like Fist of the North Star, Kinnikuman or Dragonball, it's meant to be a somewhat "manly" manga with some macho stereotypes.

Any misogynistic claims are complete nonsense. That would be akin to saying Sailor Moon is Misandric because most of the relevant characters are female. Just because the cast is dominantly male does not make it anti-female, and the females in the series are all strong and not used for Fan-service. One of the 4 strongest people in the series currently is female.

Give Toriko a go if you're looking for that next Big Shounen to tackle. It's in my personal top 3 Shounen and that is no small feat from my point of view.

P.S. BE SURE TO READ IT RATHER THAN WATCH. The anime is not utter garbage but compared to the content of the manga it's heavily censored, the animation does not do the art justice quite often and entire events are altered. I would stick with the manga only.

Starting to get tired...

It was good at first, everything was fun and the food theme, world design, monster vs battles... were interesting to read, now there are too many god-like characters, countless arcs... everything just get, kinda boring. (to me, at least)

And Komatsu, what is his ability again? Love power? "The chosen one" power? Idk I find that rather unfair and annoying =.=

Comparing with other "big" Shounen out there: I would say Naruto had the most potential for a serious, immersive world, but botched it with ridiculous plot execution that conveniently swept aside most of the conflict in the world. One Piece does the best job of creating complex world structures and relationships and using them. Bleach.... dunno.

Toriko has basic plot at best and isn't that impressive with complex world institutions. However, Toriko's strength is its masterful use of the environment, and it does this even better than One Piece. The outlandish world designs are incredibly fun, from individual food designs like apples with faces that become tastier as you scare the crap out of them, to natural designs like a floating island filled with fresh yummy food at the top of a giant danger-filled beanstalk, to man-made locations such as an enormous food gambling location. The author draws out the best of these designs to bring you into a fun world.

On the other hand, I personally don't like the people vs people battles that much, since they don't make use of the novel monster designs or the huge environment challenges where the author shines. Some readers seem to like those arcs most though.

Toriko has very few female characters, but the few that do sometimes appear are actually extremely competent. After reading too many Shounen authors writing girls as either useless dead-weight or exaggerated fanservice, I must admit I appreciate that the author opted to rarely write them at all rather than make disasters out of them. To each their own.

Overall Toriko is a fun and hilarious read. Just don't take it too seriously.

Misogynistic this, Misogynistic that. People should stop using expensive words without knowing it's value. Does the manga hates women? The women are are all strong and independent. In fact some are far stronger than anything else Jump has to offer save for Medaka box.
Does it even sexual objectify them? There isn't even any fanservice. And none of the regulary appearing women are remotely sexy.
Just because its cast is mostly men there is no need to label it as such. We might as well put a misandry stamp on manga that features only girls.

This manga is highly flawed. Very ugly art, monotone attacks that don't make sense, misogynistic, too many of its monster designs are fan made (even though the creator is more than creative enough to design them on his own), and the cooking processes need to be explained more thoroughly.

But you know what? The plot is pretty good. It's really, really interesting. The monster designs, fan made or not, are creative, though I'd prefer original designs rather than mashing two existing creatures together like Noah's Ark only had 1 of each species. Shimabukuro created a really fascinating world, and some of the foods are intensely badass. The art may be bad, but the super-anatomy looks awesome. This manga has some of the creep faces I've ever seen. Seriously, Tommyrod is baus.

Komatsu used to seem so useless, but now he pulls his own weight. Now I find his cooking scenes to be some of the most interesting.

Terry is my favourite, followed by Zebra.

By the way, the bromance is really heavy. XD" REALLY heavy, and um, it almost feels like an Asian romance drama and everyone is fighting over the heroine (or in this case, Komatsu, who is a total Gary Stu). OTL

I will punch the next person who says this is a copy of One Piece, because they must be brain dead.

Fun!

I started reading this a long time ago, but various things happened and it drifted away from my notice. I recently got caught up, and the series still has the oddball charm that drew me to it to begin with.

The characters are loveable, the situations are completely ridiculous, it makes good use of itself. Simple and straightforward, it's just a pleasure to read.

When toriko first came out, I decided not to read it, since the main character looked like a delinquent, art was very whacky and story seemed silly.

Now, after toriko reached more than 210 chapters, I started reading it and soon realized that it was some weird crossover between Dragonball and One Piece, 2 of my favorite mangas. And it even works.

cool manga IMO. The Mangaka capable of making suit story and battle for this type of manga.
First impression, I don't like the character but after I read It, well It's really interesting, the character more like Dragon Ball (future trunks) who like to power-up. Now It's become my top 4 favorite manga and I always wait for new chapter every week.

Absolutely Enjoyable

This series is thoroughly enjoyable with an interesting story in a unique world.
Now, people get all angry about this series 'cause it has people killing animals (beasts/monsters) and eating them and they claim it's messed up because they hurt animals. Are you serious? I won't have a problem with those statements if everyone who said it were some insane animal rights activists. Where do you think 'meat' comes from? The way they kill the animals in this manga is a lot more humane than the way people do in reality.
Let's get this straight, this manga is about FOOD. Which would include MEAT. Where does meat come from? Animals. In order to acquire meat what do you have to do? Kill animals. Now this manga doesn't have all that 'kill all the animals' theme to it. In fact it's quite different, Toriko (our main character) only kills animals when it's for his own survival, if he's not going to eat it, he won't kill it. I haven't seen other main characters killing animals for no reason... except the bad guys, but they're the bad guys so who cares.
The only thing that made me frown about this manga was

when they were at the dome and they were making the beasts fight each other for rich people entertainment. What can you do though? Rich people are sick bastards in any manga.

I'd say give this manga a try and don't just stop after a couple chapters, keep reading because it gets better. Don't go sobbing about all the animals dying 'cause here's the thing IT'S NOT REAL. NONE OF THOSE CREATURES EXIST.
After you calm yourself down and realize 'oh, this is just a manga!' then chances are, you'll enjoy it.

This series is seriously awesome.
I think the best part about this series are the characters, they all have their own strengths and resolutions and even the characters that would typically be thought as weak in most mangas aren't absolutely useless. Even the female characters aren't completely annoying, that's how great it is.
I also find it really fun that the story is around cooking, it's certainly unique for a battle manga to have cooking as its core but that doesn't make the series bad or weird, it just makes it more interesting.
There's a lot of uniqueness to this manga that is really enjoyable, I certainly enjoy reading about all the weird foods and animal monster things.
I'd say give this series a try and even if you don't like the first chapter, keep reading on! There's a reason why this series is still ongoing and it's a good one.
