For those of you living with their parents: Do your parents tell you that animes and mangas are not good for you and that you're wasting your time and things like that or are they happy that you like other cultures?
If they don't share your interests, what do you do to keep on watching/reading this things?

My parents never shared my interests at all, but they never discouraged me from reading manga. I always found my schoolwork trivial up through high school (that stopped in college because I went to MIT), so my parents never cared what I did in my free time, as long as I kept up my grades.

If your manga habit is interfering with your school work, maybe you should listen to your parents? 😛

No, it's not my situation, my parents are the same as yours and I do have good grades in Univ

It just made my mom think I was weirder than she had originally thought. It is my money and my time and there are a lot worse things that I could be doing with those rather than reading books with pictures in them. So they couldnt really say much. My mom still asks me why I can't like anything normal tho....

They do, but in a "too much of anything is bad" kinda way. It never got in the way of my studies, but maybe I do spend a little too much of my time on it.

Well back when I was living with my mother. (This is ... about 5-6 years ago)
I don't think she really cared about my interest in manga/anime. At first I would borrow the books from friends, then I used the money I made from babysitting my eldest sister's kids to buy manga. I think my mother was actually happy that I would read a "book" ... although it's a good thing she didn't look into what I was reading as there were a few Shounen Ai and Yaoi >.> I highly doubt she would have taken me to the bookstore/buy them for me if she knew what I was reading ... However if she did find out ,and forbade from reading such things I probably would have just made my boyfriend buy them for me and kept them at his place ... although I did have my boyfriend buy huge chuck of what I own now ....
Yeah ... I was a bit rebellious back then and if my mother did try to stop me from my interest of manga/anime I would have just done it behind her back. Or even in front of her and just ignored what she wanted ... I remember I was really into horror movies (the gorier the better) and my mother never liked me watching them. She said that they were sick and going to make me messed up in the head. I just ignored her and watched them regardless of what she said. I was such a horrible daughter which is why I'm happy I don't have one ... how I acted would have come back to bite me in the ***; I know it.

  • Don't do what I would have done if my mother was against me, instead try to talk about how good it is. ( I really was a horrible child). Learning of a different culture, keeping your reading speed up etc.
  • From a parent's point of view: I wouldn't stop my sons from reading manga/ watching anime. I just wouldn't let them watch/read the mature stuff until ... 12ish? 14ish? In other words I would support it if they like this stuff when they are older. (My sons are too young to have an interest in manga/anime).

Something like this actually.

What my parents, actually almost all the parents in my country, don't seem to understand is Fan Services, judging them to be very inappropriate.

I guess I am lucky. Me and my mom shares the same interest! Also my sister. They always get mad at me when I watch an episode of a certain anime before them so we always watch together most of the time. Though I'm the only one who reads manga.

I learned about manga and anime from my older sister and brother so I guess my parents thought that this is pretty normal interest in our family at least 🙂 I started reading manga when I was in junior high and my mom was happy that I read something and that at the same time learned english and that it showed in my english grades too. 😀 My father on the other hand would sometimes ask me what's so interesting in comics or why can't I be more out with friends or why can't I act like my age do. Yeah I think he would have been real happy if I acted like my friends. (my friends were really the worst kind of teenages there was) 🤣

Well, my parents don't actually care, since they're mostly focused on my grades. They don't really support it but they also don't discourage me to like it. My mother does know that I read manga, watch anime, buy stuff, but she doesn't really care as long as it's not that expensive or if I use my own money.

I don't think my parents even know what anime and manga is! They just lump it together with comics and cartoons.

Warn: Banned

My parents treat them like every other medium. They don't really see them as any different than regular comics, TV shows, and games.

They've never told me that it's bad, or that I should stop. I think my mum got slightly concerned at how much I actually like it though (this is a good few years ago). Especially when I started buying manga and the collection significantly grew every time I went shopping XD I know she disapproves of my figurines as well. I still buy more though. I can't help it. I like them!
She knows she can't stop me. She just thinks it's a waste of money more than a bad influence. I can understand her point of view, but to me, it makes me happy. So I continue to spend 🤣
