Soooo, I looked for a similar poll but didn't find one, so I made one...

What are your reading preferences? And most importantly, why?

Personally, I only read Manga. That's because I am equally interested in Japan as I am in Manga, so these two interests feed on each other. I don't see the point in reading Manwha/Manhua cause they can provide me with no insights about Japan. With reading Manga on the other hand, I find myself delighted to notice sociocultural things big or small. It's not just the story that attracts me, it's the whole allure of Japan. (Of course I am not deluded enough to think that I can get a complete or always actual picture of Japan that way, I use other sources for that)

So what about you? I would really love to hear from Manwha lovers as well - maybe it will spark my interest/inspire me to also try them out...

I dunno i see your point about japan's culture seeping into manga and take that into consideration and all but there are some pretty good manwha out there so idk it's kinda even for me

I've actualy found that most manhwa is drawn really well...strange hm, but thats not enough to declare it better than manga and there isn't enough to be frank.

I believe in letting people do as they wish, as do I myself. Sometimes, of course, what I wish to do is kill them and they do not wish to die. This gives life interest.

Though I do have a soft spot for manhwa. ♥

Most manga I read don't have any insight about Japan.
I read anything as long as its good be it manga, american comics or webcomics.
Although I don't really like most of the manwha being scanlated these days. They're all by the same guy and they're all shojo.

i usually read manga only because its hard to find manhua/manhwa in the u.s. actually, i tend not to read manhua because i don't like reading chinese works(sorry, but im chinese too) because they tend to be...kinda empty. and the social freedom in china is rather different than in the u.s.(from what ive seen). so the works tend to be different.

manhwa is drawn kinda weird, i agree. but there are exceptions, and i like manhwa because the drawing style is usually kind of quiet and serene which i like 🙂

manga, however...there is a plethora of it in the us. and on the internet. i don't even want to begin on the stupid cliches that shoujo mangas do(ive only read one good josei manga, and i dont really like reading about sports and fighting), but yeah. its maingly manga because of the supply.

oh i think you should put graphic novels on the list too, but im not sure if they import those elsewhere...

I tend to prefer the art in Manga.
There are some AMAZING manhwa-kas who I LOVE. But I can't stand quite a few.
Um, HWANG Mi Ri has the ugliest, most stereotypical korean drawings ever. Kills me.

I prefer Korean music and Dramas compared to the manhwa.

I noticed that manhwa has better art than manga, but I can't say I prefer manhwa over manga.
My criteria on picking what to read is good art, regardless of its type (manga or manhwa art), and great plot.

I prefer reading manga over manwha/manhua. I don't care for the art of most manhwa. It's too angular and sharp for my taste. I'm with Kitteh on Hwang Mi Ri. No thanks. Also, it seems like a good portion of shoujo-type manhwa involve a jjang. That whole plot device gets old quickly. That said, I do read some manhwa occasionally, if the story really interests me.

There are even conspiracy theories about multiple authors under the same name.

I read mostly manga.

I mostly read Manga but I think I prefer Manhwa(Just aren't as many translated). I've only read a few Manhua that I've liked so far though.

I'm enough of a comic book addict to know that manga has no inherent superiority over manhwa/manhua (or Western comics). I've dropped probably 90% of the mangas I've started, even though I'm more likely to start a manga than a manhwa/manhua. Even though I've read much less manhwa, a good number of them are my all-time favorites. And I've read maybe 4 manhuas total, but I really like at least one of them, so that's a pretty high success rate.

Talented authors/artists, as well as really bad ones, come from every nationality. There may be stylistic differences, but those aren't important to me because I care more about the underlying content. As for Japanese culture, I like it, but I've read so many mangas that the typical Japanese things in them seem cliche to me at this point, and I'm actually more frequently surprised by stories that come from elsewhere.
