I used to be quite gung-ho about korean manwha a few years back, I used to read as many as I could get my hands on, but then I came to a conclusion, korean manwha's certainly have much stronger heroines(they are always delinquents, beat guys up all the time, scary..), and do have a sense of humour that rivals with manga, but they are terrible at realism and endings.
Seriously, most of them I read have stupid endings that make you feel you've wasted your time, and I like a little fantasy in my stories, but I also want to be able to relate to the characters aswell on SOME level, sometimes I want the characters to have realistic thoughts and not be jumpy all the time...and the art may be pretty but let's be honest, everyone is a flipping model in manwhas, even manga has normal average looking people, manwha's wouldn't dream of showing someone non-gorgeous.
I'm always disappointed when I read an interesting summary and then find it's a manwha, because I know it'll get sucky somewhere.
I'll try thinking of one manwha that hasn't been a let-down...

Why did you lump manhwa and manhua together?

Well, I read mostly manga just because I prefer manga's art style most of the time. I feel so short when I read manhwa.... and they all have these crazy faces that I just can't stick on Koreans.. I MEAN DON'T THEY USUALLY HAVE SINGLE EYELIDS? But they still dress as good as ever.

Personaly I read anything or at least try it if the sinopsis is good enough, but I prefer manga because I love comedies and korean works tend to be dramatic.

Also what's the difference between manhwa and manhua? I still can't figure it out. Plz tell.

I tend to read manga more often than manhwa because there are waaay more. But it doesn't really matter whether it's manhua/manhwa/or manga as long as the story's good, it's fine.

I just like comics - I don't care in the slightest where they came from so long as they're good.

@KittyTeea: You need to learn how to google if you don't know something. If you still can't find an answer, then you should ask.

As for me, I'll go with manga mostly, as I'm more exposed to Japan's regional comics; however, even within a given regional work, there are different styles that can be attributed to another's... or something completely different.

I'm also a sucker for Rain's watercolors.

manga no contest.
there are some that are good like shin angyo onshi, but nothing like masterpiece.
and most of manhwa is similiar to each other, tell me if there is manhwa about american football.
hell, how about unique storytelling like oyasumi pun pun?
if there are any manhwa out there that as great as monster, berserk, vagabond, bokurano, ykk, aria then we talk.
but that kinda overkill, i guess.

Manga is clearly superior in all categories.

It doesn't matter.
The only thing that's really different is the direction that you read it from...

Does webtoons count as manhwa or is it their own category? Because it's clearly far different from the typical Korean manhwa you would see nowadays.

well I do not care where they are from ...
but most manhwa have that boring-all the same romance drama plot without deep characters... and webtoons are compleatly different.

manhwa really just means comics from korea. webtoons that are from korea are comics from korea. Therefore, would classify under manhwa. Webtoons are not exclusive to korea btw.

also @haru-sama, No, not all Koreans have single eyelids. The fold that makes "double eyelid" is rather common in korea and is not a result of plastic surgery... I have double eyelids.

on topic, I read everything. Manga, manhwa, manhua, american, german, etc... The entire topic seems rather trying to make stereotypes though. Reality is, people are different, and comic authors and artists are different people. You need to evaluate the authors, not the origin -- and perhaps their budgets.

To say that manga is superior to manwha/manhua is a huge generalization. There are bad and good series in all these genres. It depends on the author/artist and not the country they are from.

I will say that there are probably certain conventions and clichés in each country, but a good author would twist them/avoid them/use them well so that they don't drag down the story, maybe even enhancing it.

Some examples of excellent manwha and manhua include Savage Garden, Absolute Witch, Noblesse (webcomics count), Saver, 1/2 Prince and Youth Gone Wild. Of course, there are also many excellent manga 😀

even thought im a huge fan of One piece, i voted for manhwas cuz actually i don't see any good mangas, except those that i've been reading since years like (one piece, berserk, gantz, gto, hajime no ippo, gunnm last order etc...). the only recent mangas that i liked is Bakuman.

also i think people shouldn't judge manhwa if they don't know thoses:

the breaker
Ares
yureka
Noblesse (web comic)
veritas
ID
P.K
the ruler of the land
zippy ziggy
legend of maian
