Watch the movies. Especially Tree of Might. Turlis had a cape, too, for a minute. I think.
To be honest, all of Dragon Ball is great, save for the Garlic Junior saga. If you skip just that part, you are golden.

err...Goku is looking for a good fight and Superman rather not fight.....If you read comics or heck even watch the cartoons, you know Superman is vastly different from Goku....besides Superman doesn't have a Genki-dama....at least not yet xD

but that's mostly based on his sportsman like attitude though. the rest of Goku's personality pretty much fits Superman's in terms of defending the earth.
