Second xxxHOLiC because it's awesome.
I'm surprised no one mentioned Gantz it's not strictly horror, but it's close enough that it should fit in with what you're looking for.
Others:
Hitsuji no Uta
Shiki (although the character development is still at a lower level due to the fact that it's just beginning)
Nijigahara Holograph is pretty much exactly what you're looking for. Read it. Now.
Oh, and check out the Ghost Hound anime if you haven't already.

Ghost hunt is okay but it doesnt actually start to get really scary until the 2nd volume
anything by kaori yuki has alot of gory stuff
pet shop of horrors had alot of weird stuff but was overall a good manga( not sure if you'll like it though)
also you might wanna try berserk if your looking for serious gore. but it's seriously intense 🤢

I see the anime of Ghost Hunt and the ova of Pet shop of horrors and I was tinking if I would read or not the manga maybe I will see them. Ludwig Kakumei and all the other works of Kaori Yuki seems very good maybe I will see them too just like my sister...

I do no if you guys saw the "A Funeral Procession of K" [url]http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=1746[/url] is very good. I know that some of you probablly don't like josei but I think this one you will like. I'ts a psychologic with only two volumes and with chapters very short. It's very easy to read and the characters are really strange... in the end ... I only can tell that the end is very good. Há! And the art has a ghotic style in my opinion...
