How about we do something cruel, like on the releases page, put up a link in bold saying "Can't find the DL link to your releases? CLICK HERE"
then have it lead them to some bold text saying
"WE ARE NOT A DOWNLOAD SITE, FIND THEM ON YOUR OWN, WE ONLY SHOW RELEASES & GROUP INFO"
i think its a bit aggressive, but people keep asking lol

Or we can just ignore and wait for mellow or Manick delete the existence of the thread.
how about simply removing the dl function instead...
seems a little sad though...
may also make people ask more about dl.... shrugs just post somewhere that mangaupdates is about updates and not dls?

Yikes!! Isn't that going a bit too far?
And I think SiLNeT's suggestion is interesting...
You can always add that somewhere where it can be easely seen on the main page... something like:
Note: This is not a download site, if a download link is provided, good for you, if there aren't don't bother us about it!

i've never deleted a thread D:
why back in the day we didn't 'download', we had to swim to japan if we wanted fresh anime and that was only if...

actually, the deleting suggestion might not be a bad idea. What if it were a function for members only though? Since the main reason people ask for dl on forums is because they don't see it on the releases and such. So if you need to be a member first to even see it, new people who are here just to dl won't even know about it, and won't bother creating accounts with just one post asking for it.

yes its true.. its especially sad for those who cannot use irc
but anyhow.. how about putting it somewhere before you register (since only those who are registered can post, and ask the dreaded question).. that way they'll (hopefully read it) and not ask the question..
do people actually read stuff before registering though?

Actually i like that idea more. No, i doubt any1 reads stuff before registering, but if its in big bold text accross the top in one sentence along with the form, im pretty sure they'll see it.

No. And I have complete statistical evidence to back this up.
I suppose the problem is deciding where to put such a message where it wouldn't get in the way and everyone would see it. I just can't think of such a place.

Most people are too lazy to read so they don't.
Imagine they sell their soul to the devil but was too lazy to read the contract before signing it...hehehehe

Star Trek XI http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rZiR-NETDr0
i usually read things if theres a possibility of not being able to register if i don't read it
registering for mangaupdates didn't require too much reading so putting it bold shouldn't be a problem to those who are not too lazy...
but anyways, as annoying as the question is.. is it really a problem?

haha, you've must have not seen the old registration page. Users used to have to be approved by admin to get an account, and on the page it said not to sign up unless you were going to add releases, etc. it said, in bold, that if your reason was to "download manga" that we wouldn't accept the account registration. i think in the end we had like 3k people sign up that wanted "to download manga"...

lol! That is some undeniable statistical evidence! 3k peoples! lol...
But yeah, you could just add a page where only that would be written in bold, that you'll have to go through to register?
Well just an idea... I mean if there was only that written on a page... it will be quite hard to miss... (but I don't like the esthetics of this idea though)
