Not necessarily.
There are cute girls who are smart and non-cute girls who are stupid.

In manga? 😐 Well um, they're drawn to be moe and cute I suppose...though I don't particularly like them?
Being retarded isn't an appealing aspect.

No way! Whether it's a girl or a guy, I don't find stupidity the least bit appealing.

I agree with you 100%.

I have a friend who I am 100% SURE has some form of mental retardation and shes fairly pretty... but she had freaking disciples through highschool. 7 different guys would follow her around and valentines day was every stereotypical manga depiction of candy flowing out of lockers.
Since then I've realized men prefer stupid girls. They ask less questions and open their legs quicker. Being her friend and someone who isn't interested in females stupid chicks are wicked fun to toy with and laugh at. smile

Oh wow your a horrid 'friend'
Also you sound a bit jealous of her

My feelings exactly! I mean...seriously- I don't think stupidity is cute, but I definitely don't think it's something to laugh at.
And kitteh_13 can't kid herself by thinking she wasn't jealous of all the attention her 'retarded' friend was getting.

Ditto here. I don't think that being overly stupid/retarded is an appealing aspect.

However, although I don't personally find stupid girls to be appealing (because stupidity really does annoy me), I'm sure some guys do find it 'cute'. Similar to Kitteh_13, I too have a friend that I find to be quite dumb (that's me being kind about it) and many guys have fallen for her at one point or another but it's not to the point of a bunch of candy flowing out or anything. The only reason that her and I are still such great friends is probably only because she's a fairly nice person and that I have known her for so long. Therefore, when her stupidity hits, I just kind of laugh and let myself be amused (not to mention, once again surprised by the extent of her stupidity - or the lack of an extent).

It's our western minds that find it annoying. In Japan, the clumsy, needy girl is seen has having good characteristics. I don't know why. One of my Japanese friends explained it to me >_> Maybe because she makes other people feel better by being around here? "Thank god I'm not as stupid as she is! Ect."

I've read that the popularity of girls that are childlike idiots in male-oriented media has to do with the status of women in Japan climbing slowly out of traditional subservience and objectification. Men are intimidated by the new, "powerful" woman, and seek solace in the "moe" characters that are comfortably weak and able to be dominated.

So, it's kind of like the situation depicted in kimi wa petto in real life too?
That must be harsh!

I've read that too and have to agree with it. Why it's popular that is, not agreement in the trend itself >_<

Some men do. I once dated a woman who wasn't too bright and that shit was annoying. I'd rather have a woman that makes me think without unintentionally (or intentionally) making me feel like I'm a dumbass.

Anyway, I think that stupid does not equal cute. Cause I doubt that any of us would call an ugly person cute if they were doing the same exact stupid things that a cute person would be doing...

I've read that analysis too, but I'm not sure that I buy it. It reeks of the same pop sociology that produced the "herbivore/carnivore" nonsense a couple years back.

Here's the thing- in the 80s, during the prime of the bubble era, the standard female image was an aggressive one. Yet we don't see a boom in this particular type of media until at least the 90s. I suspect that it has a bit more to do with the iyashi-kei explosion and the general popularization of "cuteness" in Japan (which can mostly be traced to early 90s pop singers and the intentional childish aura they cultivated), but that's really just an opinion, I don't want to get too deep into it, my specializations are politics and literature, not sociology.

Taking the thread more literally, no, I don't like stupid girls. I would use the word "irritating" far before "cute," though honestly I've never really given it much thought. People who say stupid things are pretty much off my radar from that point forward.

The dumb shoujo manga girls are the result of idealization. The target audience wants to dream through rose-colored lenses- that's why the medium tends to be so fluffy. Any inadequacies the protagonist may have only serve to make the narrative more compelling- after all, if that protagonist can get the guy/fulfill her dream/whatever the manga happens to be about, why can't the reader?

Yeah, as the person above me said, it's a common thing to make the protagonist... well, basically a loser, at least to some extent. The idea is that the audience will have an easier time identifying with the main character if this is the case, for some reason. Most likely because if the main character is too cool or talented or pretty or whatever, the viewers won't be able to feel like "If they can have all this good stuff happen to them, then I can too."
Girls who read shoujo aren't supposed to find the main character cute, after all, so it doesn't really matter whether or not this type of character is actually appealing to them.
Same thing with shounen, of course, and all the harem animes that star an "ordinary high school student" who is allegedly mediocre at everything.

LOL Sure I was jealous, never said I wasn't.
More then half the guys I liked groveled at her feet but you know nothing about this girl.
She has tried to drown me, pierce my ears, chased me around with a knife, put me in a wagon without steering and pushed me down a steep hill... what else. She invited me to a sleepover where she laughed as her 'friends' spat in my face, on my pillowcase, on my sleeping bag, and wouldn't let me leave.

I've known her since grade 2 and we are still friends. She laughs when I ask her why I am still friends with her.

But she really is dumb. In grade nine she told my friend she loved her "T- for Toronto necklace"... it was a cross. We all have been in the Catholic school system all our lives. 😐
She calls ctrl on the keyboard (Circle-tull)
And really the list goes on. I guess we are still friends because she makes me laugh so hard.

Now your a pathetic, jealous 'friend'
Oh and a glutton for punishment
Your reason for continuing to be 'friends' with her makes no sense
So either your lying about something in your little story or you exaggerated most of that stuff

Whoa.
Female friendship is like this sometimes.
I'm surprised you're criticizing kitteh for being loyal and not her friend for being kind of a bitch.
I guess stupid* is* cute for you.

depends what stupid we are talking about...
Stupid as in "i act that way to be more social" = not cool.
Genuenly stupid = cool. Why? Very sincere and less conceited.
Cute? depends.

Hating maybe thats a strong word perhaps, "disliking" someone who may be a slower learner than you is pathetic. I don't need to give many reasons why, if any at all.
😮

(for those of you who dislike it...think about that for about 2 minutes in silence, they may actualy be a better person than you 🤣 )

I believe in letting people do as they wish, as do I myself. Sometimes, of course, what I wish to do is kill them and they do not wish to die. This gives life interest.
