.....

Are you really asking this? 🤣

I'm foreseeing a lot of answers that will be similar to "'coz it's good" 😛

Well, as for me, I listen to Japanese more than English songs because nowadays the English songs of nowadays are...crap...or so to speak. It's all about sex and depression now -_- Not to mention the English boybands pretty much died with N'sync (go ahead, laugh, I like them)

....and yeah...'coz they're good 😀

I could not have agreed more. Especially to the "coz it's good" part. Although I never liked N'sync but whatever... 😛

"If it looks good, you'll see it. If it sounds good, you'll hear it..."

if, by any chance, any of you actually know where that came from; go easy on me will ya? i was young back then and new to it all.....

By the way, this was supposed to be an intellectual discussion of why we like music. Personally, I need the rhythmic pulsing that my music makes.

Yes, I agree. While it's true that I listen to a wide variety of stuff, my favourites are ones that have unique beats, hence my love of jazz. You can't say that all modern pop songs sound alike when looking at the lyrics or melodies, but the fact of the matter is that most of them use one of only a few rhythms, which means that, in reality, they're all pretty much recycled versions of each other. That's before getting to stuff like sampling, might I add. So songs that defy those few, unvaried rhythms are what capture my interest most. Ergo, jazz songs, as they put the notes where you wouldn't expect them, as opposed to the modern stuff that's predictable and patterned.

I also choose songs with really good drums. Example: Maps by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. IMO, the song itself isn't all that fantastic or anything, but the drums make it amazing. Once again, the rhythmic thing comes in.

I am fundamentally against the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, just because they seem to be THE indie garage band. (Not really, but it is a long story).

Rhythm is why I like The Black Keys better than The White Stripes.

I use music to help me vent my emotions. I listen to whatever works with my mood, so that the music can truly resonate within the soul. Sometimes the music can change my mood. If any song can accomplish either of these tasks, then it's probably on my playlist.

Nah, I get what you mean about being fundamentally against a band for that reason. Honestly, Maps is the only song by them that I like. I just don't see why people think that Gold Lion's so great or anything... but, as I said, it's all for the drums.

I listen mostly to the sounds/melodies. I've never been a lyric person.

Hmm, I'd say I listen to music for many reasons, but chiefly the energy. The heavy and energetic feel that bands like Dope, Lamb of God and Mastodon bring to the table are definatly my thing (metal). Thats not to say metal is the only place I find what I'm looking for, Elvis is definatly a contender for one of my favorite artists, and James Brown is pretty good as well. Other than energy I listen to music based on either mood or sometimes just because its so interesting. As a flute player, hearing Ian Anderson go off on one of his solos is just friggin amazing since I can actually appreciate what hes doing (sure I know a lot of other stuff I listen to is no walk in the park to play, but I just cant appreciate it as much)

I listen to music about depression, sex and drugs, because those are all my favourite things.

Seriously, various forms of rock. That's ambiguous, but trying to define one's taste in music is hard, unless you're into very specific music. Why do I like it? Because it's good. Also, because there's nothing in this world better than a killer guitar solo. Hook that up with a drummer so fast you can't see his hands, and stellar bass line, not to mention a lead singer that isn't a whiny piece of... Well, what you get, my friends, is epic. High energy and riffs that you can't get out of your head.

Why do I listen to it? A little deeper, as a question, perhaps? Well, I can answer simply. I think about all sorts of unpleasant things, all the time. THAT, is depressing. It never ends. Music is a solution. Turn on some tunes, and I can plug my brain right into the headphone jack. I'll sing along with the lyrics(usually only in my head), rock to the beat, and sometimes even drop a little air-guitar. Needless to say, my mind is clear. Or at least, filled with something infinitely more awesome.

Or, sometimes, I just think of a song, and want to hear it. But that's TOO simple.

Used to be that I listened to top 40 alternative rock only--thank you parental influence!

Then I branched out; I listen to whatever suits my mood lately. This leaves me listening to a bit of just about everything. No opera yet, but I'll probably find some for a mood soon enough. And when I say whatever suits my mood, I'm not talking, "I'm in the mood for rock," I'm talking, "I'm depressed, so this album will be a good fit" or, "I feel bright and peppy, so I'm going to listen to Danielson!" So as long as something is generally consistent, I'm good with it.

It's no surprise, then, that I'm a huge fan of concept albums.
