Just as the topic states, Is celebrity Culture Destroying Society?
I've been hearing this a lot in the last couple of weeks.
to me it seems that the word celebrity has lost it's meaning and may people want to become famous for the sake of being famous.
The thing is that, the vague meaning of the word and the obsessive behavior of wanting to know what happens to this so called celebrities personal lives is destroying society.

The media profits greatly from this.
I can imagine that many, many, many years ago a person was somewhat well know for what he or she did and if one wanted fame and success one had to earn it, with hard work and talent but now a person can just streak or embarrass themselves and Voila! they are instance stars. To be honest i don't care how a person gets their fame, what i want to know is, it it destroying society and how!!

Is our fixation on the famous an escape from our lives?

yes and no. 🤣

Destroying society? If you think about it. Modain society is completly different from the society maybe 50 years ago. Perhaps its just mordenising into something else. "Fame" changing into something else is only a new step in a different society, a newer society.

It could be destroying the old society but haven't we always been doing that?
Isn't that needed for our advancement?

I believe in letting people do as they wish, as do I myself. Sometimes, of course, what I wish to do is kill them and they do not wish to die. This gives life interest.

I dislike it, but to say that it's 'destroying society' is silly. If it was destroying society, I think it would have done so by now. Society goes on just fine regardless.

You can't "destroy society". As long as people exist, there's always some kind of society. If you asked "Does celebrity culture change society?" I think I would pick "Yes".
I think that we shouldn't generalize this problem. I mean, it's bad that talentless people become popular just because some idiots who don't have a mind of their own listen to what media tell them. But that's mass culture, we can't do anything about it. A few hundred years ago "celebrities" were picked by educated people who could recognize a real talent. Now, by giving everyone a right to choose what they like, we gave it to idiots, too (and in my opinion, idiots are a major part of the society, unfortunately). As I said, we can't help it.
I hope that I didn't offend anyone 🙂

No.

Just stick your head out of the tabloids and I don't see the big deal. Celebrity culture was always around, anyways. Refer to the Greek mythology soap-fest.

"Celebrity culture," as you call it, is part of society. Regrettably. Which is why I'm not awfully fond of society, myself.

Society as we know it, is destroying itself... because individuals are shunned and sent to a dark corner of it...

Celebrities are just those that somehow achieved fame in a society that pretty much forces you to be a number or part of the demographics, people want to be celebs as an escape to the darkness of being unimportant or "just a number".

celbrities seem to give hope and enthusiasme to everyone. I can't imagine that a single one of you doesn't have a person he/she admires, if it's for music or films... I just thik that celebrity culture destroys itself, because there are so many celebrities that some really talented people cannot be seen, whereas some person who in my opinion don't deserve it to be famous ( sorry if anyone her likes her, but what exactly does Paris Hilton do to be that famous, maybe she's just entertaining...) are always on television or on the Internet...

celebrities are quite a part of society, though I'm afraid, that we could be easyly controled if it got too important...
well just my opinion ^^

Agreed.

Celebrities have always been around, in some form or another. I think there is simply more access for information about them in this day and age, in addition to the fact that celebrity status is easier to achieve.

They aren't destroying society 😐

Quoted for truth.
I feel this whole obsession with celebrities and their silly problems is just the saddest thing in the world.
Why should I care Person X is dating Person Y? Or that Athlete W cheats on his wife?
Why should anyone care, unless one of those persons is you.
What I hate the most though, is that shit like that is part of the news.
Bitch, floods in Pakistan is news, a plane crash in china is news, two celebrities I don't even know splitting up is NOT NEWS!

I agree with this, celebrity personal life should stay as personal not as a news.

But celebrity personal life become news because people love to read it.As long as there are people reading it, it will become top news. People should stop their obsession on celebrity and justf focus on admiring them for their talent .

Its society who create celebrity so, I don't think celebrity destroy society.

^Totally agreed.

The only way to destroy human society is by eliminating all humans that make up said society, everything shy of that is just another piece of the "ugly" society people are accustomed to.

Your damn right it is!

Just look at Paris Hilton. They used to play some song she wrote on the radio (all the time). Nobody would ever have played that horrible thing if her dad wasen't rich. 😔
