I'll try to help out here a bit in the seinen department.

Anything by Matsumoto Jiro and KITOH Mohiro is promising.

First Jiro: He has everything from little children who wear gas masks all the time that spy on a beastiality porno productions to a wanna be Vietnam Fotographer getting caught up in a drugged up side reality to a emotionless killer having sex 5 inches above his senile grandmother with a girlfriend he doesn't care about or understand. He doesn't even enjoy it. No goody two shoes, i promise! Freesia was already mentioned, but he has a lot of other good stuff.

Mohiro: Freakishly thin people who, specialises in taking psychopath or insecure teenagers and combining them with really evil aliens, good mix!

Dorohedoro from Omanga is good, but short so far. A guy with a lizard head hunts Magicians from a parallel magic world. The magicians all wear slipknot style masks and are pretty mental too. Add a good dose of Violence and you are good.

Witches has a intresting touch to it. A combination of fairytale and modern thriller. That was a really bad description i just wrote, but i can't think of anything better right now.

I would have added Homunculus but i see you are already reading that.

Believers focuses on a group of three cultists waiting on a island for the arrival of their leader. Things get very out of hand, and it is really worth it.

Dead End I seem to include this into most recommondation lists. The story about a group of ex special experimental soldiers who's memories have been wiped doesn't sound all the promising, but the characters are all so loveable and the ending so not hollywood that i just love this comic. If you read it pearl, send me note what you thought.

Anne Freaks is pretty much the perfect response for your recommondations appeal. I don't like it that much because i don't like the art and i think the plot is somewhat flat. But i garantie no normal character in that manga. It is the only manga i mentioned here which really has a "bad" main character.

Ciguatera is just brilliant and focuses on how the main character tries to keep his school Problems ( he gets bullied very seriously ) seperate from his girlfriend who doesn't know about it. It's a very sweet romance story on one side in contrast to the relationship with the bully and the bully girlfriend. MUST READ!!!!!

thats enough for now, have fun

Interesting that the majority of recommendations fall under Seinen and that the majority of unusual or "bad" characters are men. Is it that men are more willing to read and accept them? Or that the publishing companies don't think women would like that sort of character?

Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

Anyway, I have two more suggestions:
Tetsuwan Girl -- I just started reading this and it's really good so far.

The Push Man and Other Stories -- On my wish list, but it looks like it fits this thread.

There might be some kind of sexism in them. <.<
Mostly might be that men read more gore than women and
publishing companies think that it might be better to make men
atrocious so men could try to understand their acts.
Personally I would be more afraid of a man than a woman so it
could be just for the fact to make them even "scarier"..
This of course was just pulled out from the hat by me for
I do not pay a lot of attention to the gender of people in manga overall.
The thing that makes characters interesting is the mind. 🙂

Oh and bully_jesus, I haven't seen you for a while. 🙂
Hello.

hey mamsmilk, nice to see you around too 🙂

to the gender issue.
I would just say that there are a lot of things which attract male and females unequally, violence is i think in all just a more male fascination. That doens't make it exclusivly male of course, as good old pearly is sure to prove, but more males than females.

Same thing for lots of other stuff from videogames to foosball.

even though im almost positively sure everyone's already probably heard of Hellsing, i'll still mention it since no one else has. and if you like hellsing, there's a kind of eh, extremely similar manhwa called Priest

and for pandapuff, i recommend Houkago Hokenshitsu. the main character is neither a man, nor a woman! it's a he/she! =] no discrimination there, eh?

I think women can be tremendously frightening in the right conditions, but in a different way than men. 😲

Yup, men definitely read more gore. I just don't think a character whose "behavior is out of the norm" needs to have gore. I wonder why more of those characters aren't found in the other genres.

And you're right! I also think that the mind/characterization is the most important part.

I'm female and I've always liked action and violence. 😀

I LOVE that series! Cannot wait for the next volume! LOL, that's a great way to avoid discrimination.

Yay! So many freaky characters to read about! I'm grateful to everyone for their suggestions, but especially Bully Jesus and Pandapuff. Much love to you for your recommendations! <3

I'm really glad for the seinen recommendations in particular, since that's my favorite genre. That said, I'm also intrigued by the (relatively rare) examples from shoujo and shounen. It does seem that seinen and josei contain more unusual protagonists, probably because they're aimed at mature audiences with more varied and developed tastes.

Not that I'm dissing shoujo or shounen, mind. I enjoy those genres, too!

Yeah, I think seinen has become my favorite genre as well (although I read tons of other stuff), so I'm definitely gonna check out some of these suggestions as well! 😀

Joking 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀

checkout all the harem anime/mangas and you'll find both

Inu Neko Jump has a freaky main character (the headphone girl) and it's funny (a bit ecchi though, but in a good way^^).

Edit: Oh yeah, The Hating Girl is great too (about a girl with an arrow in her head).
Not very freaky/geeky are the characters in Love Roma, but the story is very unusual: it's basically a romance with some comedy, but without melodrama, misunderstandings, love triangles, betrayals, cheating ... sounds boring? Well, it isn't. (Mangascreener was scanlating it, before it was licensed and even they said it's "highly recommended")
And you might want to check out Okama Report -- it looks interesting, but I haven't read it yet.

Definitely! He's awesome. I like characters that don't follow "the rules."

How does he remind you of yourself otakubaybay? Are you mysterious and crazy? (that's not a bad thing 😁 )

I could be considered mysterious and crazy, but that's not the part of him that reminds me of myself 🙂
He reminds me of myself in the way he's extremely possessive. It took me a while to realize it, but one day it just clicked in my head. I mean, in the second volume they flat out say it, but there are other hints and it explains a lot of things.

Like how he doesn't want to get close to anyone, I mean, he doesn't even want to have sex with a whore who's willing to do anything (because he's afraid of getting hurt). In the first volume, he even says "I'm a coward. I can't take pain."
The reason he allows himself to be so possessive of Tokito is because, in Kubota's mind, Tokito "belongs" to him since he found him.

Then again this is all hearsay ^^;;
But it makes sense, right? 🙂
Anyway, so yeah, I'm pretty much the same way ^
^;;
Sometimes I even scare myself >.>;;
(I've only read/bought the two volumes published by Tokyopop, so that's why there are only references to the first two 😀 )

Sorry for the late reply 😀

Good insight! It makes me understand the character much better! I had completely missed that line of reasoning, maybe because I'm not really possessive, 😛 LOL, I don't even consider myself the "owner" of my dogs and cats, but their "caretaker." 🤣

That must be why I like these types of characters so much-- 'cause they're very different from me. 😃

Ooh, that's cool 😀
I like characters that I can relate to 😃
I mean, Kubo-chan's got his own way of doing things (he's such a complicated guy!), but I don't completely shut myself off from the rest of the world 😀 (otherwise, what would I be doing here 🤣 )

I'm sure you think I'm totally crazy now, along with the rest of the forum :haha:
