They allowed alcohol? 😲 When my friend went to prom, they were searched....

In Austria you are allowed to drink at the age of 16. So there is absolutely nothing a teacher could do about it ^^

At my prom a couple got kicked out, I think the girl's date did something he shouldn't have although, I don't know what. Then the guys there started taking off their clothes, nothing much just shirts, and a little teasing, as in they would unbutton/un-zip certain things. As a side note nothing R rated was...uhh...shown.

Well maybe the minute you saw my nick you realized that this was going to be a crazy-long post but here's a warning anyhow. 😉 So, this is a long post.

Quote from SirGir

Me, an anti-social girlfriendless person, go to prom? Psst, I've never even bothered to go to a dance! I wonder if I missed anything...

SirGir, you'll eventually have to probably dance or go to a dance to please whoever is your future wife, unless she's among the few that doesn't care to partake in the dancing. 😉

Quote from heardtheowl

For the real prom, I flew up to NY from FL where I was living, and we took three limos to the party which was way out east on the Island overlooking the water. All us girls were dancing/grinding on each other and we had lots of fun. ^_^ A couple of my gf's actually brought other girls as actual dates...man those were the days. lol

I may end up sounding older than heardtheowl (I know I'm younger than her, I checked), but even when I check up m-w.com for grinding, it sounds like what you did was like what was done in the beginning of Dirty Dancing, which was a dry hump... O_o xD ...ducks And you even flew up from NY from FL just for prom...? [none] That can't be!

Quote from Scyfon

My formal/prom is on the 27th. I can't wait 😛 I just got my shoes today and still looking for a suit. Planning to wear black suit, red shirt, black tie...nothing too fancy i guess. My friends are taking a limo/driving. Me the otaku...I'm getting a lift from dad >< but w/e. I'm single(i was planning to take a girl...but still haven't asked >>), but for me, its all about the suit! I mean...how many times in life does a young man get to wear a suit? 😀

I'm sort of surprised Scyfon is so giddy about wearing a suit. As a girl I'm sort of annoyed that it requires so much work as a girl that we have to go to so much extra work to look nice while a guy looks more dressed up in a dress shirt and pressed pants. We have to cover the casual, semi-formal, and black tie occasions while all a guy has to do is hop into a suit and he's good to go. This was shown in 7th Heaven several seasons ago when the oldest son, Matt, takes this girl to a formal dance at school (or is it prom? Don't recall for sure) and she takes hours to prepare while he takes an hour, or maybe less.

But anyhow, although a young man might not have many occasions to wear a suit (except if you're a guest at a wedding or going to an interview), a slightly older (20-25 years) man might have a reason to wear a suit when attending weddings, maybe to his own wedding (instead of a tuxedo...), and interviews or even everyday for work if his joy requires it.

I remember for an event called a Touch of Class in December (yep, with Christmas around the corner and minus degree weather with snow on the ground) that this guy that was in one of my classes mentioned that (I think) his mom had bought his suit from the Army and Navy. But he usually dressed laid back since I think he was a skateboarder (although he was laid back with his headphones with him all the time, I found out he probably did care a lot about his studies and he was even part of the geeky/nerd crowd, and I say "geeky/nerd crowd" with, well, a bit of jealousy even). He looked a bit odd with his spikey hair and being in a brown suit but he did look more dressed up. And my school's spirit was good for this event because I was even surprised when I saw a girl that usually dressed completely punk and had her hair in spikes wore a white lacey dress. Her hair was still styled the same though. She reminded me a bit of the Bride of Frankenstein (I'm sure she knew there was a chance she did with the hair paired with that dress and she probably decided she didn't care), but not in that "gah! You scare me! >_<" way.

Well students also got free lunch that day if we were dressed up. It was a buffet with cakes and cookies (somehow I remember that there was more solid food that was served than that... Maybe I didn't eat it... It was probably hor 'ordervs (I know that's spelled wrong but I can't find it using a dictonary.. 🤢 ) xD) Since it was usually cold out, I would wear pants and put on a purple blouse. It was really plain made out of acetate, the colour being a really deep purple and I guess some buttons that were suppose to look like mother-of-pearl, and the cut doesn't seem very feminine (I don't think there were any darts in it to have it look more fitted). It was still more dressed up than some people in school that were trying to get to the free food but the usher wouldn't allow in. 😉 Though I remember one year I spotted a girl in a purple blouse in one of my classes that day and I was "gah, she's wearing a purple blouse and she's dressed better than me. And oh yeah, I like the purple of her blouse better. xD"

Quote from FuN!

I didn't go to prom 😢 Instead I spent the night preparing my house for the afterprom party 😀

How come that ended up happening? That is, if it isn't too painful to talk about... 🙁

Quote from ares6

I didn't go to the prom. If I have to spend 1000 dollars and be with people I don't really like for a whole night....no thanks.

Well why would it cost $1000? What did everything cost to add up to that much?

Quote from luisalirio84

Pssh you missed nothing. I had three proms ...skipped them all 😀 What's the point I hardly socialize with those people anyways going would have been hypocrasy.

Going out to celebrate graduation (as it's called where I live, since usually the extra work put into planning the event by the teachers involved and the students' association) isn't being a hyprocite as I see it. One would get dressed up for his- or herself and celebrate that they are of legal age for things like having the option to purchase alcohol legally and being able to vote and such. Oh, and having finish highschool. I think most do get to finish highschool unless something steered them off that path.

For my school, people were allowed to celebrate grad even if he or she didn't get passing grades to get a high school degree. It's probably because along with being nice, it's another kick in the butt that a person failed (and it really hurts if the person tried for those failing grades...), and plus once the year was over the person couldn't celebrate getting his or her highschool degree with his or her friends the following year.

Quote from luisalirio84

Not to mention boring. The truth about prom: It's just something the evil clothing companies came up with at their secret headquarters back in the 30's so that they could have a way to unload all those stupid useless dresses that noone would wear in real life. Think about it 😕

Considering fashion was far from practical in the past (I believe there was this skirt called the "harem skirt" around the late 1800 early 1900s where the woman tied her legs with rope in order to ensure that she wouldn't rip her skirt. And this was when woman were fighting for the right to vote 😲 ), why would 1930s dresses be "stupid useless dresses that noone would wear in real life". Since 1930s was when The Great Depression happened, I don't see what use it was having a girl pine for a dress and an event that couldn't be held since there was barely any food and people rarely had money to spare. There are some hardcore people today that would give up a refrigerator full of food for a new outfit, but I'm sure the parents would've yelled that girl's off in the impracticallity of giving up food for a new dress. luisalirio, since you are a guy, what wouldn't fall under the "stupid useless dresses that noone would wear in real life"-dress catergory? A shift dress with nothing adorning it?

It just occurred to me mentioning that that if a family wanted to have the dress but not have to pay extra for retail and labour, they could try to get the money to pay for the fabric and sew the dress themselves or alter a previous or currently-owned dress. And the 1930s weren't the only time when impractical dresses were or are being, I guess, "pushed" on to women. I think that still happens until today with impractical dresses being sold to women and I think some of the wedding dresses in the 1980s scare me... 😲

I've read that the prom got revived when John F. Kennedy was president and going to prom was seen as a duty to one's country. And back then, there were probably less occasions for young men and woman to meet to pair up due to the stricter rules back then. And if it was in the 1950s after the war, well there is even more reason why the country wanted the young men and women to have kids and repopulate.

Quote from luisalirio84

Also Only losers go to prom 😛

...says the guy who didn't go to prom. I hope you aren't saying that just so you can feel better and the rest of here that did can feel worse. 😛 🤣

Quote from batmans_lair

ladies calm down

Last time I checked, luisalirio is a guy. ares6 is an..."it", since he or she has left gender to be open, either, or none. 😉

Sort of funny that the girl that wants a puffy dress (it doesn't get more girly than that, I do mean that in a nice way 😀 ) is telling the other "ladies" or in fact the 'guys' to calm down. xD

Quote from batmans_lair

for limo as you said ares6, i think i just plan to get my mum to drive me 😀 good ol' mum, lol. Some of the guys in my year are trying to think of the strangest way to come, so not typical limo, best they got so far that could work is an ice cream truck, lol

Woo, an ice cream truck! 😀 I wonder if these guys will be as inventive and fun when it comes to their weddings. 😉 That's an entrance I'd want to see. 🙂

Quote from ares6

Ok...never mind. My friend went with his brother.....to save money. A little weird, but i guess it saves money.....

I still wonder about why that relative was chosen. I could understand a guy taking his mom but why his brother? I guess someone to go with? Or maybe they were both graduating the same year? Ah, they also could've been meeting up with other friends at the party but they went in the same car to the event.

When an inspiration speaker came to our school, he mentioned that in a small school he spoke to that had grades 1 through 12 in it (I think), that for grade 12 that year there were only two guys. He mentioned his thoughts on how the event would go for their grad, that one of them would say a bit awkwardly to the other guy "So, you wanna dance?" My guess is that those guys maybe found some girls to hang out with or that maybe there was no celebration (a bit sad though, since the occasion and accomplishment doesn't get marked).

Quote from ares6

oh wait....there was one thing......my friend, whose a guy, dressed like a girl.......and well.......it was surprisingly pretty........freaky yes.....but somehow......one of the other kid from the other school asked him out......freakier..... 😃 Worse senior prank ever....on prom......

Wow, I wonder want drove this guy to do this. A dare maybe? 😉 I'd love to see photos of that. xD 🤣 It doesn't seem like he was a drag-queen from how you've mentioned it.

And yeah, I don't think Japan has a "prom" either. There's the graduation ceremony but I hear that the occasion is very solemn. For (shoujo) manga it seems a bit more 'fun' since I remember this boy and girl making sakura petals from paper as part of that 'celebration'.

easy? EASY!? Whoa...let me tell you something. Guys get it waaaaaay harder than the girls. All they have to do is find a fine dress but we have to first find out what design the other guys are wearin, what tie they're wearin, and heck even what color of shirt they're wearing. Suits don't vary other than the color and designs (lines etc.) I planned to wear a red tie, then found out that heaps of other guys were wearin red ties too.
It was like...
**Guy1:**I'm wearing a red tie for the formal, what are you wearin?
Guy2: Hey, I'm wearing a red tie b17c|-|!
Guy3: wat the...No I'm wearin a red tie!
I crap you not.....

Actually, not painful at all. It's just that at our school, the juniors plan and hold the prom for the seniors, and that year it was to be held at this restaurant and when I went to check out the place I thought it was a horrible place for what's supposedly to be one of your last and fondest memories of high school. I hated the theme as well "By the Sea", it was a restaurant at a harbor. The price was terribly high for such a bad place too, $80 a person for a restaurant (even though dinner was included) I still thought it was horrible. The prom we planned as juniors was on a yacht and it included snacks and such and it was only $60 a person. So I had the idea of holding a prom party so that people who wanted to could attend instead of going to prom. I lined up a DJ, caterer, photographer and even found a mansion in Beverly Hills whose owner was willing to rent it to us for $1500 a night. I talked to my classmates about it and they thought it was a great idea, but when the adviser to the junior class and the ASB (student council) adviser heard about my idea they threatened me with expulsion because I was going on about boycotting prom. I wasn't boycotting it! I was giving them some competition cause they've gotten complacent from having a monopoly. 😛
