When it's an honest mistake or a typo, it doesn't really bother me (esp. if I know the person isn't a native English speaker), but when people do it "to be cool" or because they're lazy, it irritates me.
"[English] not only borrows words from other languages; it has on occasion chased other languages down dark alley-ways, clubbed them unconscious and rifled their pockets for new vocabulary."

I'm okay with IM talk, but I prefer the normal grammer. If it's a text, then I understand that you'd have to shorten it. It's what I do as well, but for IM, I type normally. It just drives me crazy.

I don't mind people using shorthand like lol, imo, tbh etc. What I fucking hate is when people start just writing phonetically or text language. You have a whole fucking keyboard not 8 keys so fucking use them. I also hate when people who are from an English speaking country and don't speak/type like it. Actually it seems more likely for people with English speaking people to have terrible grammer , punctuation and spelling. People who English isn't their first language usually much more careful as they actually wish to be understood.
Firefox has a spell checker use it. And if you happen to use IE kill yourself you fail at the internet. 😛

I'd prefer people not do it. But I don't care as long as I can understand what the heck they're saying. Like abbreviations are fine, lols are good. But if it uses it the whole damn time, then it gets annoying. I'm a grammar freak sometimes, I notice them pretty easily(my teachers get annoyed about it).

I don't see how people do it... for me anyway it's more complicated to type with numbers, symbols and spelt badly phonetcially etc. It's The Same With People Who Capitalise Each Word, It Is Sooo Much Extra Work :/

And people who capitalize 1 random letter out of a word...it's weird and it takes more work so why do it?
Honestly, I care..a whole lot. There are times when you can tell that it was a typo and times when you know they intentionally misspell things and that's what bothers me. I can't stand it when people use numbers because it makes me dizzy just looking at it let alone read it.
For some reason, the single one thing that bothers me is when people use "ish" instead of "am" or something like that. For example: I ish cool. It's mostly used by people on anime/manga chat forums (sorry) who think they're being cute and cool when they use that but it's so lame.

I care. I am a grammar nazi; however, I am tolerant about certain things.
First and foremost, this is the English language, and you ought to know its rules and be able to obey them. This includes spelling properly, using puctuation and capitalization properly, and using proper diction in both writing and speaking. If you cannot, then it is your responsibility to educate yourself on the subject so that you do not suck. Also, it's always nice to have an extensive vocabulary.
Now, with that being said, I am tolerant about some things in informal situations, such as, when chatting online, using abbreviations like "lol" or "atm" or "brb" or "thru" or "tho," leaving the periods off the ends of sentences, occasionally missing some commas, misusing ellipses, being neglectful about capitalization, and using improper diction for joking around and such ("I can haz a box?" or "I are so hungreh... I wants to eats some muffins..." or "Oh noes!"). When one is talking casually to one's friends, this stuff is mostly okay, too. This is because these situations feature immediate, informal conversation, where the meaning of what's said is most important, and joking around is perfectly fine. However, if these things I mentioned are used too much, it gets to an inappropriate level and can be irritating and stupid.
Now, I would like to say that, for posts on a forum, which are a bit more formal and where one has more time to write, abbreviations and "fun talk" are okay in moderation, but one ought to spell, punctuate, and capitalize properly, and to neglect to do so is quite pathetic. (I mean, if you make an honest mistake or typo once in while, that's okay--everyone makes mistakes now and then (yes, myself included)--but any more than that, and it's just sad and quite worthy of scorn.) On that note, has anyone noticed that the grammar of the posts in this particular thread has been especially terrible (compared to the rest of the posts on the forum, I mean)? Ah yes, irony, we love thee so.

It'd be nice if I could say "who gives a crap."
But isn't the whole point of typing something up, like, so someone can read it? If no one can read it because you're using numbers and capitals and mutilated words, then you're just wasting your time.
I skip posts like that. 😛
Mindflayer, where are you? This is a perfect topic for you 😁
