A question on how you like your manga! Applies to scanlations and the real published stuff

I always preferred having the translation of the SFX below the original panel (also loved it when they put translation notes there, too).

yeah suffix is always nice but i can live without it. i understand its probably just more hassle for the translator and i want that manga out quicker. always quicker. and i dont need that mess to be perfect. if i want it to be perfect i'll go out and pay money for the manga <_< (meaning the raws) (i guess it could mean the english publishers but like 99% of that stuff is censored or edited or something) i'm happy as long as it's readable. but hey that's just me....

why back in the day we didn't 'download', we had to swim to japan if we wanted fresh anime and that was only if...

I agree with Hostile. Translation notes are always funny to read.

A translation under the panel is fine with me. When you leave the japanese text as it is it's closer to the original.

If I can choos, I'd prefer english sfx if the typesetting is great. I have noticed that it gives more feeling to the manga cuz atleast I read them subconsously. but else I don't really care though it's good if there's a translationnote on the panel...

i somehow miss the option "never translate the sfx. i want it japanese." ... or is there one that shall have that meaning?

maybe its because i am able to read the kana,
but i think even before i learned them i liked them better left in.
guess the main reason is because the editors always screw up their work. i dont want massive-lq-clonestamping-edits in my real mangas. and i dont like sfx that are written either besides the panel, or covering the original sfx or even the art either.

if they want to put in english sfx they need to

• be creative at getting equivalents and not just write the actual ACTION into it
• do the edits at an hq-level

i get easily pissed off when they miss the any of those two points... for example:
for the first point:
in d.gray-man , tokyopop germany release:
you see how allen has his arm nailed into the wall, so he's stuck. guess whats written as an "sfx"... right, "nailed to the wall".
for the second point:
mahou sensei negima, german Egmont&Ehapa release:
all sfx translated and replaced with sensemaking equivalents. BUT! they used the clonestamp so excessive without caring for the quality and how it might hurt the eye of a caring reader.... i stopped buying their releases because of that. one scene, there shouldve been an eye behind the glasses of that character... there was some sfx over it in the original... the new sfx was placed totally wrong and you didnt even see the hint of an eye, neither the hint of the hair or even the outline of the glasses...
all cloned on lq-level. looking like the editor didnt even know how to use other tools.

Ha Ha no problem. SFX arent too happening in my opinion. I usually read action stuff so i know more or less what's happenin in the cells. Like, SLAAAAASH, STOOOOOOMP or whaterver just extended. Or my favourite, UAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH... Bah its so much better if i could hear it. Say what you SFX lovers, SFXes are meant to be animated. A few words dont do justice to Luffy's golden rifle before drilling the crap outta Enel's ass.

been editing a few doujin's here and there and all I have to say is: SFX aren't really that important and most of the time, translations for them are situational. there are times when SFX can be editted and times when they can't, either way, I like it best if all methods are used (editing, translation notes, etc.) but if the edit is really good, where it blends seemlessly into the manga then it's all good. though personally, I don't really mind if it's translated or not.

I'm the same as ttxdragon, i can read kana so i like it better in japanese. it feels more authentic

Hmmm, i haven't thought about sfx really, but i guess i think the same as J//, japanese sfx are ok, but they don't have the punch that english ( or german ) has for me.

I can read them myself, so I don't really care.

But if I pretend that I can't, then I would prefer a translation of the SFX in small font besides it, that way, it's where it should be and doesn't distract from the original art.

I'm not too fond of SFX translation written outside the frame, looks weird and doesn't flow right (similarly, with official English releases, I don't really like having to flip to the back of the book for explanations).

If the sound effects are really gonna be a pain for the editors I can do without, but it does add quite a nice touch.

I was readin initial D last night and i just loved the way som of the SFX are translated beneath the box.

for example: Sound of car approaching, Sound of Tires, .....,
I think a more literall translation would have been something like: screeeeetch, rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr, chugachugacchuga, whoosh
something like that

SFX ROCKS!!!! XD I absolutely HATE it when they cover up the japanese words up with english. -_- It looks horribly UGLY. Smashes the artwork with the hammer of hideousness.
