I think it's natural that one meets their friends basically at work, school or whatever one is occupied with. If it weren't for university I wouldn't see my friends too often, but I don't think this is bad. I rather think it's nice going through these things together, learning for exams, working of projects, etc. I like doing that with my friends. Of course it can be lonely on semester break, but that's how it is. Everybody has their own life (boy-/girlfriend, family, ...) at home, too.

I remember reading a survey lately in which about 85% of all students agreed that school is a place where you can find friends, and 75% agreed that meeting friends is the most important part about school. But only 45% stated that most of their friends go to their own school.

Actually, yes. None of my friends go/went to the same school as me. I never liked to make friends with my colleagues. It was always a cold relationship between them and me. I can't imagine going to school with a friend and then going out with the same friend. I'd rather just go out with a person and but never see them at school. That is why I never made friends at school/university and probably when I'll get a job I'll have the same attitude.
For me, it works the best this way.

Never been to school but I have tons of friends. A few annoying ones that I wish wouldn't be my friend (that can't take a hint!) but a bunch of nice, wonderful people too. 😀 Yes, I'd have a lot of friends without work or school.
