This week's fun little poll is from our member 13Darko. Not an exhaustive list of choices, but oh well!
You can submit poll ideas here (and try to keep them manga/anime-related)
http://www.mangaupdates.com/showtopic.php?tid=3903
Previous Poll Results:
Question: How do you usually read your manga?
Choices:
From magazines - votes: 40 (0.3%)
From the actual volumes - votes: 792 (5.8%)
On a laptop - votes: 6114 (44.8%)
On a desktop computer - votes: 4549 (33.3%)
On a small portable device (tablet, phone, etc) - votes: 2167 (15.9%)
There were 13662 total votes.
The poll ended: June 29th 2013
Hmm, the votes for portable is a bit higher than I expected...

Is next week the opposite poll? What protagonist do you hate the most? (lol)
It is a good chose of a poll 😀

For a site with manga and novel updates it sure has an unnecessary number of anime polls XD

I think in a situation like this, anime and manga can be used interchangeably.
It's a hard call for me, but I ended up with vulnerability. I guess more than the others, it leans more toward having a personality, and not just a cookie cutter hero. I don't mean vulnerability as in an Achilles heel, but more like he's able to react and interact more.
I dunno, it's a hard call for me.

This is the first decent poll I've seen in a long time.
I prefer an anti-hero mostly, for example Desert Punk. I always like a devious reason to laugh. The first five choices define most protagonists and I've grown tired of that kind of generic character.
-No longer do I quote great scholars, the famous, etc. Kids feigning wisdom ruined it.
--I wont type a post like a college report. If you don't read it just for that reason, you don't have to post why your hoity-toity ass refused to. I swear, so many people on this site are so full of themselves. A lot seem to think they always have an "intelligent and/or logical" point or show signs of a superiority complex. They never admit they're wrong. Maybe partially, but excuses abound! :\
-Stop mailing me about my comments. I don't read them.

Why isn't there the cunning/clever option?
My favourite characters are always the smart ones.
Eumenes of Cardia Historie
Lelouch Lamperouge Code Geass
Light Death Note
Dirk Provin The Second Sons (not a manga or anime)
and several others I can't quite bring to mind.
Let's make a list. Add who else you think fits this mould, in the replies.
If you were to go there and come back to me hurt, I will take your place.. and pull everything you hate.. into destruction...
I will erase anything that hurts you.. from the face of this world.

I chose anti-hero even though it doesn't exactly fit because I like my protagonists a little dark, a little jaded, and a little angsty, but not down right evil, even if they do evil things. I'm a huge fan of the grey area, and having multi-faceted deep characters, so honestly I don't like my antagonists to be evil either. I like everyone to be a shade of grey.
I think angst attracts me, I seem to love a lot of tortured-soul type characters. My favourite character in manga is Ash from Banana Fish, in anime it is Lelouch from Code Geass, just to give you an idea.
I detest the "If I believe it I can do anything!" types so typical to shounen. I used to not mind characters like this, but as I have gotten older I have moved from indifference to irritated in my opinion of them.

Me too! I love Light and Lelouch as well. Here are some more of my favs.
Ash in Banana Fish
Yakumo in Shinrei Tantei Yakumo
Sei in Yasha
Akabara in Vampire Juujikai
Tatsuya in Mahouka koukou no rettousei
Edward in Full Metal Alchemist
Ayumu in Spiral: suiri no kizuna
And they're just the ones from manga!

Either make a list that includes every reasonable option or add "none of the above".

Calm in the face of danger, Anti-Heroism and Ruthless killer. I hate protagonists who are wimpy, or say they will not kill enemies... or the one who sprouts nakama bullshit _ So those of opposite nature are my liking.
The only protagonists I ever liked are Rai and Frankenstein from Noblesse.

There should be a "funny" option.

I second this. As much as I love dark, cynical protagonists (usually anti-heroes), one that can make me laugh is even better.

5.9 percent of votes went to "undying love for their friends" lol??
i prefer protagonists who are both vulnerable and anti-heroic
as long as the main character is not immune to tragedy/misfortune and has a raskolnikov-esque personality i wouldn't hesitate to read the book/manga
Hey, can you add "mentally unstable" choice? Well, that's not exactly the word, just like Kumagawa Misogi from Medaka Box or Koudai Kamiuchi from Hakomari even Yuno Gasai from Mirai Nikki.
Basically a character who is strong, often fooling around, act nice, casually and friendly, but we don't know what in his mind or what he will do seconds later, like bomb that can explode anytime without warning, and because of his strength, he give a massive sensation of fear and pressure around them. That's cool right? 😀 Unfortunately character like are very rare. 🙁
