I am looking for a very specific and eccentric type of romance manga, because I have a weird complex for this kind of stuff. I am looking for a romance manga which contains a character who is not the protagonist (preferably female) who is not beautiful, but has a very caring and devoted heart. (It would also be nice if he/she was loved despite the fact that she could be considered unattractive[usually doesnt happen though because the main character always goes for the hot one]) For example, some of the characters that I have enjoyed include Neneko Izumi from DearS or Aya Toujo [before her makeover] from Ichigo 100%. I'm not sure if I'm conveying my point across but I don't see alot of this in shounen manga. (most of the time the damn loser just go for the hottest chick on the block, though i haven't really tried shoujo yet)

Also: I do not...DO NOT like the type of manga where the loser protagonist with some insane luck get bombarded by beautiful members of the opposite sex

And Also: I'm not sure if the distinction I'm making is accurate enough, but I just want to know if such manga exists (preferably shouen)

Protagonist is interested in a girl who's technically "crippled", and isn't really attractive to begin with. She does get more attractive later on, but more than anything else she's really caring of those around her.

Uhh, it's not really a harem though as in she's the only love interest.

Kimi Ni Todoke The main character is this girl who looks like Sadako from the Ring and she scares the shit out of people. however she is really a shy, kind and caring girl. She falls in love with this guy who she calls 100% refreshing? or something refreshing cant remember.

I can understand your dislike for bishies but try this one.

Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge altho it's a reverse harem with a lot of bishies the main female character is this girl who was originally an ordinary girl but after being turned down and called ugly by her crush she turns into a weird occultist fanatic who doesnt care about her appearance. The goal of the bishies is to make her into a lady. The girl, Sunako, also looks like Sadako from the Ring but at times can be very beautiful. She also has a tsundere type personality but eventually warms up to the bishies. (oh and she can kick major ass)
