So I was wondering... For those of you already out of high-school, does the perpetual high-school setting of many/most manga bother you? Even when the setting is not high-school the main characters are most often high-school kids. Josei and Seinen titles are far more few in between (at least the ones translated/scanlated). So I wanted to hear how you feel about it.

Personally, I'm a university student and the high-school setting/high-school hero-heroine can get kind of old and grating at times. There are some stories that are just wonderful and exciting as they are but when it comes to more average storylines that don't grab me as much I find it really hard to identify and grow bored. Still I haven't stopped reading them yet as there are still many gems to be found. I do enjoy reading Josei titles ALOT however.

It hasn't bothered me at all, though I'm a bit of a fabulaphile (Love/obsess over stories). I'm also a long way out of high school (so maybe it's something that would get on the nerves of someone who just got out more than someone who has been out for a long time). I guess for me, as long as it's a well written story, the setting doesn't matter much.

Those "grown-ups" demographics don't deny the foolishness of the story and characters.

HAH! Too true, Blob, but that wasn't the point was it? 😛 Foolish characters and stories abound in all demographics.

It doesn't really bother me. I can read high school manga, if the story is good.

I'm in college now, so maybe if I was older I would lose touch with the whole school scene.

I'm going to graduate from college soon. But now or 5 years ago, it's the same for me: I hate the bad ones, and enjoy reading great school-life manga, both shoujo & shounen. Dengeki Daisy, Kimi ni Todoke, Oresama Teacher, Lovely Complex, W-Juliet, Hana Kimi, Pretty Face, Midoti no Hibi... you name them 😀 sometimes a cute school-life comedy can relax your mind a lot.

I mostly read Seinen, and college/university is a more prominent setting there. Although as Blob mentioned, being Seinen doesn't prevent the characters and plot from being childish and blown out of proportion, but in my experience the majority (or at least the ones I've read) avoid these problems anyway.

I still read the occasional high-scool manga, such as Mysterious Girlfriend X or Sgt. Frog though, and I don't think my being in college affects my enjoyment of them. I hope it never will!

After some time you'll probably be bored with seinen and josei as well, it really depends if the manga is good or bad~

If the story is good, the story is good. Sometimes a high school setting can be very nice plot-wise, considering that is when a lot of us developed the most, intellectually and as human beings. It's was a pivotal time for everyone, no?

Usually if I am reading something in a high school setting, it's more than likely a slice of life type one shot, and so not as noticeably subjected to the usual stereotypes of mainstream shojo, shonen high school manga.

Does it bother me as in it lowers my enjoyment? No. I do enjoy reading manga set in HS even though I graduated over a decade ago. I do however, feel like it screws with my opinion of high school. When I see a manga with the characters having a good time in general, my bitterness about HS subsides and I imagine what it would be like if I could go through it all over again. When the stories turn dark and nasty, I think to myself how happy I am it's finally over.

I'm only in my 2nd year of college but high school settings don't really annoy me. I mean, I'm not someone who looks for mangas with main characters who are in college just because I'm in college. The story's what's important for me... not whether they're still in school or no.

But like I said, I'm only in my 2nd year of college. I just got out of high school lol.

High-School manga doesn't bother me. If the story is good, then i'll follow it.
However being a master's student i often wonder why High-School manga refuses to make a transition to either college or employment. And i mean this in the true sense of the word. I think it could flesh out the characters more, for example i had my mind set on Law school while i was in High-School but after some disapointments i decided to change and take philosophy.
I like the genre, but as i grow older i expect more of the characters and while the setting makes me reminisce i still want more.
I think it's an important moment in one's life that should be more explored.

I still love it. I dunno. I see it as I read anything else.
I don't know if that will change in the future but right now I still love the HS drama! 🙂

I'll continue to read HS set manga if it catches my interest.
I don't really care about settings much if the story has caught my attention.
