How does it put stress on the eyes? Is it because we are not used to reading English upside down?
Even if it does put stress on the eyes, it is probably minimal compared to the stress of many other factors in our lives. Also, most unfamiliar things cause some level of stress. It does not mean that we should only stick with the familiar.

It's a skill that I used to do pretty well but has become less meaningful these days 😢 I can only do it decently now

I can read upside down just fine. Since 2006 I've been reading every book in my mother tongue upside down, unless they were poetry or consisted of scientific texts.
I consider it a usefull skill if you want to read something to children. During my childhood, illustrated children's books were read to me that way, so that I could look at the pictures while listening, and later, I used the same method whenever I read fairy tales to a children.
Besides, it's quite fun actually because it slows down my reading pace for a bit, and therefore, it prevents me form finishing a book in one day. And it offers you more opportunities (to read texts other people are still writing, to find out puzzles like the inscription of the Mirror of Erised from Harry Potter...) 🙂
