- Fellow Melancholic fans
- Information about the manga--is it worth reading? Is it anything like the anime?
Thanks for your time! ^^

I haven't read too much of the manga but if you want true Suzumiya Haruhi greatness, read the translated novels.

Yes [I've watched the anime a couple times 😀 and I've read the first volume of the manga]

I find the manga to lack some of the flair the anime delivers. HOWEVER, this is only due to the limitations of images versus video. The play of emotions and events is offsetable yet still understandable in the anime. In the manga, the story is straightforward and the revolutionary aspect of the anime is not really instilled in the manga. IN THE END, the manga is fun to follow if you are really a haruhi fan 😀

Just as every one said here... the novel is pure awesomeness!
Seriously... I actually kinda regret watching the anime now... it spoiled a couple of volumes for me. The correct order should have been the novel and then the anime.
EDIT: I actually didn't bother with the manga... so I can't answer on that. But you really should read the novel

Excellent! Thanks everyone! I was feeling rather skeptic about the novels, but I'll go for it now!
SyaoranX--where did you find the manga? I've been searching for it, but the sites listed here didn't work for me...>.<
Thanks again for replying, everyone! Anyone interested in discussing Haruhi more in depth, just let me know. ^^

Tbh the manga is so so. The novels are flast out best, but the manga only covers as much as the anime and the anime covers it much better with better feeling conversion from novel to other media. Also, this is the second attempt I believe at a manga development for haruhi suzumiya. The first one was forsaken by the author of the novels and was canceled.

The novel is good, so is the anime, I only read a few chapters of the manga, but there was nothing there that the novel or anime didn't do better.

After having read five of the eight Haruhi novels, I watched a few eps of the anime. The anime really just kind of was a travelogue. "here's the club room, Here's Mikuru's maid costume, here's the baseball game, here's the movie, here's the island..." Really, between the illustrations in the novel and the author's prose, there wasn't anything I hadn't already seen before watching.
Now this is no bash on the Anime. Kyoto Animation did a great job. Indeed, I don't think it could have been done any better without a change of script. If you're not into reading translated Japanese novels, the anime will at least get you the meat, if not the sauce of the books. But the subtlety of a lot of things is lost in the anime. Things like Nagato's almost-but-not-quite emotionlessness and Mikuru's pathetic helplessness are not to be seen.
I've got to say that a manga of this material strikes me as the worst of both worlds - Kyon's narrative personality (all of his quirky references to odd literary, historical, and mythological things, for instance) would be hard to get into a manga, and you'd lose the colorful richness of Kyoto Animation's work, too. Maybe Kojima Akira could manage it (He's the guy who did Mahoraba), or the woman who did Kare Kano, but most mangakas couldn't pull it off well.

As a Haruhist, I have to say that the anime wasn't bad, but the novels were way better (translations can be found at baka-tsuki).
