I was surprised, but pleased, to see on TAKATSUKI Noboru's MU profile that he is male, although I'm not sure how reliable that info is. His name sounds male at least.

Quote from Master_Rollipolly

I might be a little late posting in this topic but even though yaoi is most likely read and written by mainly females, then maybe if a male writes a yaoi manga, he'll get more popular as the mangaka because he's male. Its the simple facts in life that make us attracted to the slightest details. If all else fails he'd have a ton of girlfriends. 8D

I see... wait, what?
You are saying that a male mangaka would draw yaoi so that he could get more attention from women?
I'm afraid I don't understand that logic...
Wouldn't a male mangaka who draws yaoi, swing that way too?
I mean why else draw and think about that stuff. shudder

Oh... okay, disregard my previous comment.
But again why would you prefer reading something drawn by a male mangaka over a female?

I personally don't find the fact that male mangaka draw yaoi making them attractive. And I have no preference for any mangaka because of his/her gender.

Almost all bara is written by men. There are a fair amount of male yaoi writers as well. I'll post them here as I remember them. ^^

KUJOU Aoi
KISARAGI Hirotaka
TAKATSUKI Noboru
TAKAO Hiroi

Does Axis Powers Hetalia count? The person that writes that is a guy.

TSUKUMO Gou

I've never read the only work that's been translated, Saigo no Sangatsu, but I love his style. I guess those are his only two works.

Sorry, beware of long reply. -_-;;

I used to think that yaoi manga was created by ONLY gay men, because of the sexual situations that some would think to have them in. I mean, who else would be comfortable to write that stuff?
Think about it... for a female it's kinda embarrassing to have to do all the research, such as: looking up the sexual positions, where does the man's junk enter?, what sex toys they use (or not), drawing the jizz after copulation, possibly having to watch porn, etc...
When I learned about homosexuality, knowing that there were people who liked the same gender was enough info for me; sex wasn't even on my mind.

Now that I found out it's mostly female mangaka, I'm kinda disappointed by the graphic depiction and the stories. I used to think that the sillier plot themes in yaoi manga were funny because it was a fantasy/parody of gay life from a male, gay mangaka's point of view.

But do the female mangaka really know what a gay man is like, what the gay men really do in certain situations?
If I was to learn about homosexuality from a female yaoi mangaka, I would definitely get the wrong idea.

Maybe that article ( http://intersections.anu.edu.au/issue12/lunsing.html ) posted way back in this thread needs to be read by all female yaoi mangaka of today to see how their portrayal of gay men is affecting their audience.
Or they should at least interact with some real gay men to depict them fairly.

But, now, I'm just preaching to the choir, aren't I? The cutesy boys are just too alluring, right? Their lovely legs with no body hair? Their beautiful and appealing bodies? It's so unrealistic, but it just can't be given up because we want our hot gay bishies.
( Poor gay men having to compete with 2-D ukes. )

Which is why I stick to shounen-ai more because most of those plotlines and stories are more mature, accurate, and appropriate than the yaoi material that caters to the crazy fangirls of today.

And that is my spiel 😀
I don't know why I had to get that off my mind... but... yeah..
Discuss.

Interesting criticisms, arabesqueno2.

This is the conclusion I've come to after reading many a yaoi manga: Yaoi is not primarily about homosexuality. It is about women -- how they feel encumbered by the social construction of gender; how they have trouble identifying with female characters the way they are traditionally portrayed in manga; how they sometimes fantasize about men acting against male stereotypes by occupying "women's" roles.

There was a shounen-ai manga in the 80s about a futuristic world in which women have died out, and men have to become pregnant to carry on the human race; it won an award for feminist literature. At first, I didn't see what was feminist about it, but now I think I understand -- to imagine a world where gender truly doesn't matter, you have to imagine that there is only one gender.

Or they should at least interact with some real gay men to depict them fairly.

That is a legitimate concern, but I don't think BL mangas are necessarily less realistic than bara mangas made by gay men for other gay men. I have read some bara, and it just promoted a different kind of fantasy: Hulk-like bodybuilders.

@arabesqueno2
You do have a point. However, I never think it's embarrassing for those female authors to do the research and write yaoi stories though, because they are writing about the other sex, so they can feel free to do whatever they like. And a lot of stories are mostly fantasy rather than based on some realistic research. 🤣 Do you think shoujo/josei or shounen/seinen romances are realistic? Most of them hardly are. Nobody uses those shoujo/shounen romances to learn about human relations and heterosexuality (or some do? XD) so why do you think you should learn about homosexuality from yaoi? People can get wrong ideas from anywhere, all the time. Maybe if it's too realistic it will be boring. Perhaps the same goes to BL stories.

Wow. People actually responded to my crappy and lengthy post.
I mean... I wrote it pretty late in the morning, and I was kind of on a high after watching the movie "Philadelphia" with Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington.
I just somehow had to get my thoughts and opinions off my chest.

I really thought this thread was dead, and it's been my only post on these forums ever. Actually... I only posted on this one because I thought it would guarantee no responses, heh...

Thanks for indulging me, lmao. Really. 🤣

Ike Reibun? It says female, but that's not always true, right?

Why do you think that's not true? O_o Indeed she's female. Her stories are nothing different from the rest of most authors.

Ah, well I guess I'm not sure what to believe these days. Some authors say female in their profiles, but when I go back on certain authors to check for manga, I notice that the info beneath 'gender' will change to male, and then back.

It's just all very confusing sometimes. o___0

I think it's safe to say that over 90% of all yaoi authors are female. Well I haven't actually checked lol so I donnu.

Anyway, I think there are more female yuri/shoujo-ai authors than male yaoi/shounen-ai authors, regardless of the quantity difference in releases between 'em.

On a sidenote: Where are the yuri threads lol. 😀 😎

What about Asou Kai? I've been having this feeling that he's a guy...

I don't really have any preferences of reading yaoi manga by female/male mangaka. But sometimes or often, I'd prefer to read yaoi manga by male mangaka's as they don't "over do it" or at least seemed more realistic. I just find that there's a lot of female mangakas that like to make the uke so DAMN girly, which pissed me off. (Of course I know these kind of guys do exist, but sorry, I just can't stand them :3)

I would've read bara if I could.. but the drawings grossed me off D:
