If this passes I'll be really, really pissed off.

If this passes I'll be moving out of the country after I finish school. I can't believe how fast our nation has begun to fall, we no longer believe in the freedom of speech, we no longer believe in the freedom of press, The united states no longer stands for what it once did.

Yeah, this country has been rotting for a long time, and the stench has become overpowering. However, I do have some small hope, as it seems more people are becoming aware of the problems that have been dragging us down.

any sort of censorship is bad IMO, and one on the internet is twice as bad cuz its the only place in which i feel truly free of government crap ,censorship is all about having other ppl force their ideology on you -on the internet its fucking unacceptable!!! >:-(

Didn't they try to pass a bill like this before?
I vaguely remember something very, very similar to this being shot down.

Considering how crappy our Congress is right now, I'm actually worried this could pass. (Hopefully if worse case does happen, the Supreme Court would get involved)

Thanks for the links, I didn't even hear about this.
I'm surprised (not really, I guess) that news sites aren't making a huge deal about this

I'm actually in favor of it for the most part. I'd be glad if we could get rid of internet bullying. Something in this world that we do not need.

The only way to get rid of internet bullying is to get rid of the internet imo.

News media bullying is a worse form and goes unpunished.

The amount of times they gang up and RUIN people, frequently causing them to commit suicide or be publicly threatened and scorned.

its probably at least 6 people a year. Less in times when politicans are campaigning because if they attack politicians and celebrities they generally know how to handle the nasty trolls.

but when they gang up on normal people, its inciting mobs to commit murder. its first degree pre-mediated murder for the purpose of gaining ratings and other financial gain.

they are the scum that needs to be cleaned out of society, before you tackle the 'internet trolls' who learned if from them.

Yes, that was the COICA Internet censorship bill, and I'll bet that if the current two get shot down as well, we'll see two new versions next year.

Ah, thanks for the answer-- I knew I'd heard of similar before.

To other people on this forum, more informed than I am, any idea when we'll hear whether this thing gets passed or not?

Also, to me, it seems like this whole thing is just some political theater by Congress to hide the fact that they haven't/aren't really doing much.

Congress just has "nothing else to do" (hmm, who's that hobo in my neighborhood? ಠ_ಠ) and just wants to look like they are actually active because of the fact that they have more vacations than the average American has in a year.

Today November 16th was the day the House of Judiciary Committee i guess evaluated the bill, it hasnt even been voted in the House yet (it was formed by the House's Judiciary Committee though)

and Congress is just playing politics. Refusing to make compromise to try to make the other party look bad. The reason they're forming this bill not because for shits and giggles but because lobbyist want this bill to pass it's amazing what you can do when you're a rich person that forms a group with other rich people to protect yourself from the law or get laws passed.

We take down a fair number of justly elected governments for financial gain as well- Guatemala or Chile or even Iran (well, that last one is slightly different because it involves a non-domestic company). It's really more about the money than good or evil. Same thing with the whole "capitalism vs communism" debate on a grossly oversimplified level (communist countries don't make good markets).

That aside, I'd be surprised if something was passed, enforced, and not repealed. Whatever else you want to call the US government, it's a giant red tape machine, and this makes for some messy work. It had more ground when wikileaks was still a media darling, the public has far too short an attention span to wait a full year. If someone with the means really wanted something like this passed that badly, it would have happened last time.
