Chess ability is very different than intelligence. Intelligence helps determine your maximum chess capability, but doesn't do that much for your current ability. Experience helps enormously, and L doesn't have the experience with chess that Lelouch does. I think L is smarter, but would lose at chess.

I don't mean to offend here, but anyone choosing anyone other than Lelouch is simply very wrong. And perhaps hasn't watched the series in full.
Lelouch played chess with the entire planet as his game board. Did any of these other cats conquer the world? Well, Lelouch did. Using Zero, he became the world's dictator, and then eliminated said dictator, bringing peace and freedom to all. For a time, at least. Further, one should consider how he managed to do this. He didn't get everything handed to him on a platter. He was given several defeats, experienced set back after set back, but adapted. Changed his tactics each time, and pushed forward. Real time tactics. No one can really predict their opponents' every move. It's the player who can adapt to anything who'll win in the end.

I'm stuck between Lelouch and L, since Lelouch has more experience with it, and L is good at guessing and predicting moves. If there's a time limit for the game, I would include Shimakaru, because he can quickly come up with numerous strategies in seconds.
But if I were to choose from characters outside of the poll...it's definitely Schneizel.
...
I ended up voting for L.

I disagree even though Lelouch did play a game of chess with the planet, L have played the game of hide and seek to find one person in the whole world who is killing without any weapons, any evidence or anyway to track that person down other then using his brain alone to figure out who he is. I doubt that lelouch can do such thing and that he would probably die from the death note the moment he declears his name, Lelouch vi Britania
btw if L loses Near will win... I mean who else can do a blank puzzle in like a minute?

Yes i know this comes rather late if u think of the date, but that is as important as the subject.
"L" works by analysing the criminal he is trying to cath, learning how they think, what they wanna achive and useing the crimes as way to understand them. Due to "L's" supperior intelect he can grasp the opponent/criminal´s way off thinking. He uses baits, tests and comunication to capute the criminal.
Lelouch bases his tactics on his opponent and focus on seeing through them and see the weakness the have, unlike "L" who focus on understanding. Lelouch use the diffirence betewn him and his opponents and the diffrent benefits they have to win.
I can not say that much about Shikamaru since I do not think u can make an analasys on his full capabilitys on the short times u have seen what he can do, compared to "L" and Lelouch. But he uses his intelect to outsmart his opponets in his fights by luring them and in such a way that they get fooled.
The important point here, they all look at their enemies and meet them in their own ways, however all three of them are counter player, they uses the enemys moves to understand them and turn it agiasnt them, wether it is a trap, scheme or well developed plan they all have to meet a common condition, their opponent mus move first.
So the one that would lose betewn these three is simply the on that would have to play as white.
I might ahve been a litle bad to explain it but the dissicon on who starts would have major effect on the outcome.

ishida is a smart character, but nowhere near as the other 4 you listed..
shikamaru plays shogi, not chess...
i dont watch code geass, so i dont know how smart lelouch is...
so i have to say its a tie between L and conan, but im leaning towards L considering hes a born genius and ive seen him play around with chess pieces more then conan

I've never heard of five-way chess before. I'd have to see it in action first before. I'm sure strategies would change.

Uhm, sorry to say, but winning a big game of "hide and seek" and solving a big mystery has NOTHING to do with chess. If you want to use that as a proof of intelligence, sure, but real-time strategy and tactics stumps that in terms of Chess.

If it deals with just intellect, I would say it would either have to be Lelouch or L.
