I don't use any. I probably should, but I rarely ever have problems with viruses. So they are just another waste of space.

Mistake, Yes you should! Waste of space? My Antivirus takes 20MB on my hard drive? How is that a waste of space? when you surf the web for a hour it takes at least 20MB! It's a mistake to think that you don't have any viruses because your computer runs fast. Even if you rarely use it!

I mostly use Linux/BSD, so I don't see the need for an antivirus application. (at least for now)

If I were to recommend one for a Microcrap Windoze user, I'd probably go with ClamWin. It seems to be the best of the open source ones.

i use kaspersky 7. tried the upgrade to 2009 and didn't like it as much. if you know what you're doing and spend a lot of time online, kaspersky is a great investment. i've know too many people who have had mojar (system crashing) problems with symantec/norton for me to trust them. ca and avg aren't bad for people on budgets. in the end, what brand your friend should get depends on his budget, what he uses his computer for, and how involved he wants to be with his av (kaspersky can be VERY involved.)

I'd rather bet that it's Norton causing the lag than your old comp. It slowed down mine like heck when I was using it.

Same here. Just install Ubuntu or Debian and you don't have to worry about viruses anymore.

Its winning because it comes preloaded on every computer that comes preloaded with Windows. And most people don't realize how crappy it is so they don't bother removing it and replacing it with something better. Hooray stupid computer users.

We've all heard it many times when a new Microsoft virus comes out. In fact, I've heard it a couple of times this week already. Someone on a mailing list or discussion forum complains about the latest in a long line of Microsoft email viruses or worms and recommends others consider Mac OS X or Linux as a somewhat safer computing platform. In response, another person named, oh, let's call him "Bill," says, basically, "How ridiculous! The only reason Microsoft software is the target of so many viruses is because it is so widely used! Why, if Linux or Mac OS X was as popular as Windows, there would be just as many viruses written for those platforms!"

so yes, Linux/Mac ect... are safer and don't get as many viruses as Windows... Yet...

I use AVG, the regular version, though the free version is good too. Norton is such a resource hog. I used to have it on an old laptop, and it made it even slower than it already was.

the real kicker is that the viruses out there that are specific to macs are so malicious that many effectively destroy the computer making them unusable.the only linux based malware I've heard of are some nasty rootkits.

just what I've heard.

I'm running ZoneAlarm and it works great. I used to use Norton and it was so bad that it would crash the computer sometimes (Yes my computer is that old and pathetic). With ZoneAlarm you don't even notice when it's running and I haven't had a virus since installing it.

Ah, I see.
Those 12 people using Norton, I have no sympathy for you guys. 😛
