Does art matter?

I think it's hard to define what "quality art" is. I suppose it's a matter of preference, and how much you emphasize that preference, when it comes to art. I personally can't read anything with a bland cliche storyline.
I don't find art distasteful most of time the type of art definitely lends itself to the atmosphere and the message of the manga.
For example, a lot of people didn't like the art for Monster because the girls weren't hot and the guys weren't bishounens, but the art made it seem more realistic and down to earth, rather than sugarcoated. Also the art for Hourou Musuko is simple and in it's own way, emphasized the thoughts and emotions of the children. It also gave that slice of life feel.
I try to believe that there is a reason the author chose to draw in this manner.

Manga is an art style, since we're all on a forum dedicated to manga, obviously the majority of us are going to care.

Yes. to me it absolutely does matter. When i read a manga i want to be able to enjoy the art. If the art isn't even that good then how can someone get interested and excited by it. I have been drawing anime style for about six years and i'm sorry but if the manga doesn't have good drawing then i can't read it. I get annoyed because i think, "What the heck? I can't read a manga with this crappy drawing? This looks weird." I have seen so many manga with really good art that i can't stand reading ones without good art.
If it doesn't have good art, I won't even touch it.. 🤣

Of course it matters. Manga is a visual medium after all. More than words, it uses pictures to tell stories. So if the pictures aren't pretty, how can I enjoy the story it's telling?
It's like watching a good movie with terrible actors. It's not enjoyable at all.

If I cared too much about art I would never have read some of the best things out there.
Some things I thought were ugly:
Get backers - only in the beginning though
Ares - Odd art style but got used to it and loved it
One piece - Same as Ares
Angel Densetsu - Probably one of the ugliest in the beginning but the funniest manga EVAR!

It does matter, unless I get hooked up by the story. Or I'll hear that the plot is great. Then I'll read it, even if the style isn't to my liking.

to me, even if i hear the story is great, if the art isn't to my liking then i don't read it.

Art matters but is something I may get used to if the story is great. Moreover, I will not read a story visually stunning but boring. I may buy the illustration book though.
I in my case that may be because before Manga I was, and still am, a book lover; where your imagination is fueled by the author’s way of telling a story.
That is just me and I do not advocate or criticize one way or another.

Yes. Art is important. Story is too, mind, but if it's a good story with terrible art, I won't read it; if it's a bad story with bad art, I won't read it; if it's a good story with good art, I will read it, and if it's an okay story with really good art, I might read it.
If I want a story without art, I can go read a book. In fact, I often do. If I want art without story, I'll go watch a movie based on a book. I go to comic books (no matter the culture) for the combination of the two.

I chose it depends, because there are some drawing styles that I just dont like, though I really could care less about the actual quality of the artwork I can occasionally be off-put by certain character designs.
For the most part though, I have rarely encountered any drawing styles that I dont like.

To me story and art have to sort of match in a lose way like in 100 Ways of an Exorcist. The art for elfen lead suck nearly enough for a no collect. Its not just art alone that makes a manga good, its art story and the feel ya get.

The art is the most crucial and significant part in my buying of manga. I only ever buy manga if it has a unique look, no matter how ugly the characters look, how surreal the backdrop is, how detailed or geniusly simplistic it seems, or how totally retro it is in flavour.

Of course art matters! It's manga after all, not novels!
As long as it fits well enough to the story, it's fine really. I just can't stand the ones that's too messy or confusing, bobobo brings to mind of the chaotic style that makes my head spin just looking at it.
In the end, as long as it's consistant with its style, and match the series, it's fine. I just hate the ones that go all over the place in terms of quality, those I stop reading immediately...
