I just wondering why yaoi manga in this site get rated so high, i look at the highest rating manga and there so much yaoi got rating 8,7 or higher.
coz i read some of them, i admit there are some really good one but to reach the same rating as masterpiece like vagabond, fullmetal alchemist or even 7 seeds just puzzle me.
I dont want to sound homopobic but is it because they're yaoi??

When you're into yaoi you usually read quite a lot of good ones and bad ones, but since it's a genre you're enthusiastic about you will rate several of series you've read and if you didn't like it then you probably won't bother giving it a rating at all. If you compare the number of votes between Bleach or One Piece with yaois like Border or Yellow! then you'll notice that the mainstream mangas have 10 times the amount of votes.
In conclusion, yaoi mangas don't get that many votes and most of the people who rate them are fans therefore they receive an unproportionately high rating.

In my opinion only like oldish yaoi manga with odd art gets ratings of 7 or so if Im scoring otherwise most current ones are definite 9s and 10s, their all so good and lovely.
Other genres tend to just really be generic or share tons of similarities, I mean are there really any battle shounen action series that are truly worthy of high scores in this day and age?

i dont know, it seem to me people rate action or other genre manga more objectively, especially in seinen manga. people including plot holes, character development, realism, story telling to judge seinen manga not just the art or the "loveliness" of the manga it self.
as evidence we see more variation of rating for shounen or seinen manga, either their old or new.

I was comparing the rating on my complete list vs my complete yaoi list. (Only reason why I separate the two is so I can quickly look at the high rating for suggestions, and most don't want to read yaoi. I also have a separate list for oneshot, but that's not relevant atm).
I found the mangas in my complete list are a whole range or ratings from 1's to the very few 10's, but my yaoi list mostly has 6+ . Yes, I would still consider myself a novice yaoi fan, and that list only has 30 mangas as oppose to over 250 in the other list.
My point when I read a yaoi I expect certain things, and want to have certain points met in the story. Most of the time I get those things, and thus the high rating. When I read other genres again I expect certain things , and sadly I don't get them which they end up with not so high of a rating.
So yes I can understand why something like Hagane no Renkinjutsushi that I gave a 9 would be on par with Sono Kuchibiru ni Yoru no Tsuyu that I also gave a 9 rating. I was expecting different things from each and got most what I wanted from both.
I believe it all amounts to what you want from that genre. Different height level of exceptions and some genres are easier at meeting those levels. ( In other words some genres may be easier to execute than others hence a higher amount of wonder quality mangas)
Yes yes, I know I make longwinded comments, but that's just me >.<
I should proof read my comments more, but I won't...
So keep in mind I'm filled with typos

EVERYTHING on this site has disproportionately high ratings. anything that's super popular is going to have a ton of 10's. this includes yaoi, a quickly growing niche with lots of popular titles. also people's tastes are really subjective; if you look at the list of the most popular manga on this site, i believe the ones on the top just reflect the most popular genres on this site: shounen, seinen and yaoi. people are a fan of those genres the most and will rate them highly because they love that genre.
i don't look at ratings anymore in order to find a good manga. i'll look at the comments and see if anyone has anything more substantial and critical to say other than "OMG SO HOT" or "i love their love!!!1111" i myself don't rate any manga at all unless i feel really strongly about it.

What are the guidelines for objectivity when it comes to rating manga, or any fictional form of entertainment for that matter?
Reviews and ratings, due to its nature, will always retain a high element of subjective quality. Regardless of how objective you attempt to be about judging a fictional piece of work, at the end of the day, your personal preferences, likes, and dislikes will always color your overall critique. Many consider Stanley Kubrick's The Shining to be a cinematic masterpiece in the horror genre, but for me, it's an abject failure as an adaptation to Stephen King's original novel. Does that make the movie any less technically sound? Of course not, but the fact that it doesn't resonate with me on an emotional level, like King's novel, lowers its achievement in my eyes.
While I think character development and storytelling are worthwhile qualities by which we judge any type of fictional work like manga or novels, we also have to keep in mind that manga is also unique in that it has segregated demographics for which stories are written with a certain audience in mind. Seinen is targeted towards an older audience dealing with subject matter that is of a mature nature. There's a heavy emphasis on realism because its subject is of the same nature. Character development is an important aspect in that form of storytelling, therefore a viable quality by which to judge a piece of seinen work. However, I don't think the same can be said of shoujo or yaoi. Do you expect shounen to be realistic?
My point is this; you can't judge each demographic with the same standards as another because it's written with a different audience in mind, and therefore with a different brand of storytelling, tone, and characters.
You can't judge all manga with the set of criteria you mention and have all readers place the same amount of emphasis and importance on said qualities. It's not a realistic expectation - especially when it's about a source of entertainment for some. For instance, there are probably a portion of readers who care more for enjoyability than technicalities. Harry Potter is one of the most popular sensations in the last decade and it rates high amongst readers both young and old alike. It won't win the Pulitzer any time soon, but do you think people penalize it for lacking a quality of writing found in such works by Faulkner or Hemingway?
I do agree, however, that yaoi readers tend to be more enthusiastic about their reviews, but that's in large part due to niche nature of the genre (boy love, that is). And perhaps it's much easier to satisfy all the elements of a good yaoi than it is a seinen or shounent 😉 On a personal note, I often times tend to rate yaoi relative to its similar counterparts like other yaoi or shoujo. Giving my favorite yaoi a nine doesn't make it an equivalent to Full Metal Alchemist. It's apple and oranges.

it's just like you said, so you agree that this site should fix their rating sistem?? because is very misleading, when the first time i found this site has "top rated" search i was very happy. i look there are many yaoi manga at the top so i think " maybe this yaoi is great manga which just happen to have gay protagonist, i dont mind a few gay scenei" so i read it. but most of the time that's top rated yaoi just happen to be what yaoi fans considered good yaoi manga.
Im sure many user encounter the same problem as me.

i dont think there's any fixing the rating system. really, all anime/manga related sites with rating systems suffer from this problem: MAL, ANN, you name it.
best you can do is check the yaoi tag in red when in advanced search and sort by rating!

That's not the point, i don't wanna exclude yaoi because i don't want to missing out( meaning the manga not the yaoi part). the perfect example was movie, there are many good gay movies but for me they're good movies which just happen to have homosexual as main character living their live. sadly that's not the case for yaoi.
Another example is CAT STREET manga, there are one gay chracter in that manga, IF the author decide to follow-up more to that character or maybe add few gay smex scene i woudn't mind. i would still think that was great manga because it has great character, good story, good character development, good art.
if that happen would cat street be considered yaoi??
What is MAL,AAN??
