You seem to misunderstand what FREE means when it comes to Open Source. It's perfectly within their rights to charge you for streamlining the kernel and optimizing it to work with the insane configuration options they offer (just look at the server section).

I could do it myself (maybe you could too), but I'd rather pay them the little bit extra they charge in addition to the hardware costs to make sure the machines run as awesome as they do (I know people who bought from them, and some producers I know who use their custom rigs have nothing but good things to say).... it would save me many hours of recompiling as well.

Hell, I'd pay someone money to remove the MS swastika on keyboards if they actually offered such a service. 🙄

...and there are quite a few Linux/BSD users on this site... that link was for them, panda-kun.
