It's just that in portuguese if you don't know wich sex a person is you call him(see?) a male, we don't have a solution to that because in portuguese it's almost impossible to tell about someone you know without revealing sex, even if it's about yourself.
Ex: Meu tutor pensa que sou uma nerd - Female
-----Meu tutor pensa que sou um nerd - Male
Well seems like this doesnt apply to english( a new thing I learnt today)
