Although the child itself has a pretty high chance of having a defect I was thinking also there will be some emotional problems just growing up in a family like that. Think about if you found out your parents were brother and sister or something like that. I would probably feel horribly awkward at family gatherings not to mention the treatment you would get from your peers and the rest of the community. Shame would definitely be one of the most prominent feelings. I wonder how a mangaka would be able to tell a story about that.

Zubz is right about the possible psychological consequences...
And about the higher chance of defects?
Well that isn't entirely true...
Allow me to give a short (and extremely simplified) course in genetics:
Our chromosomes are divided in pairs. Each one of those comes from one of the parents.
On each chromosome there is a multitude of genes. Genes in the same position on a pair have (nearly) identical roles. So let's suppose that one of them contains a defect. If the other one works just fine, in most cases, that should be enough for the individual to live normally without any noticeable defect (that is also not always the case but let's forget it).
Now let's see the effects of consanguinity...
Let's suppose that a brother and a sister share around 50% of their genes. Their kids will have a possible risk of 25% of the exact same gene appearing twice.
That doesn't exactly mean they do contain a defect. It just says that they have a higher chance of having the same gene twice. And in the case of a defect in that gene... well tough luck.
But actually some features that are considered "positive" are recessive (meaning they need to be on both genes to appear). So not only defect are recessive. Some positive points are also recessive (although these cases are rare).
So in some rare cases, consanguinity can be advantageous. But statistic calculations proves that for an overall population that contains around more than 2% of defective genes... Consanguinity is dangerous. (not so sure about the numbers anymore though I'll search them if I feel like it)

An example in real life -
"inbreeding" or really incestuous combinations is used in breeding animals, to try to bring out desired traits. This works, but you can also bring out bad traits.
I'm sure people have heard that purebreed dogs and cats and such have alot of medical problems, because their gene pool is so small from inbreeding to get desired traits. Moral of the story: diversity is good! In nature, diversity in a species means a better chance of survival.

IIRC, it's not just the added risk of having defective genes that makes incest(especially sibling incest) unhealthy; there's a chance you end up with DNA where you're missing the genetic information needed to grow something or you have more information than you should due to the repeat of genes. Which is why people talk about incest babies with eleven toes. :\
I'm not too sure on the subject though, so I could be wrong, but that's what I heard, anyway, and the general idea seems to make sense.

I'm no expert but that the mere suggestion that incest would produce a person with eleven toes is quite ridiculous and stems from uninformed bias. The only problem related to incest has already been mentioned above. The additional problems you mentioned are simply bogus.

Hey Pearlesque,
A manga I am reading, Young Magician, contains some incest. There was a part dealing with the history of one of the characters, so its not a main theme for the story. It was father/daughter and then mother/son. It appeared in Volume 6 of the CMX translation, unfortunately, the scanlation is not that far along.

If you guys consider cousin relationships incest then i'm an incest child. On multiple degrees. I don't plan on getting married to a cousin because of the adde risk. But if my familly wasn't alerady all tangled up like this. I would have though about it seriously.

Thats kind of how it went down, but she wasn't a full clone i believe. Anyway they say guys always end up marrying their mothers in other women anyway, atleast eva was direct about it.....

Cardcaptor Sakura has a lot of gender/incest/whatever bending themes 🤣 You can't really get away from it.

Do you think incest is such a big thing in Manga because Japan is an island that is so small that everyone ends up committing some sort of incestuous act eventually anyway? Don't mean to offend anyone, the thought just popped in my head.
Life is tough......but it's tougher if you're stupid.
