In a professional translation, notes are a terrible terrible thing. They give the reader the feeling that they're reading a translation, and when you're buying something in a store with an English title, you want to be immersed in the story as an English speaker... that's why most companies change little things in speech to their English/American equivalent instead of leaving them Japanese and making a note (like replacing Takoyaki with KFC or a hotdog). The audience here is a little different, though... the average reader actually knows what Takoyaki is and WANTS to know if they don't (otherwise they wouldn't have researched manga enough to find scanslations in the first place), so instead of avoiding notes, I usually sway towards the end where we translate "accurately" (hah) and then give a list of notes at the end. People who don't need them can skip them, and people who are interested can learn something. None of them are extremely relevant to the story as a whole, so it doesn't hurt anything either way.

I am changing my opinion.
I don't mind notes- as long as there aren't too much of them, and they're not annoying.
I just read a manga chapter, and all the notes were like this:
'Get off the bishie: he's mine!'
'Only I can watch him sleep!you don't even DESERVE him!'
'He's soo hotttt!'

constantly. 5 or 6 notes per page.really, really annoying.
I hate those kind of notes.Jokes don't bother me, I actually like reading them =)- the information is useful too, explanation of words and such.

Mixed opinion.

Personal notes like "the guy is hot<333" are kind of stupid. Totally agreed. Scanlators, do your so-called favourite mangaka a service and stop putting in stupid notes. You're making your favourite mangaka look like idiots. People want to read what the mangaka says, not your stupid notes.

But leechers, you're just leechers. Not like you're paying anything. Even if you're paying, not like it's legitimate. Just leave the scanlator alone and let them put in their stupid notes. If you hate it, just get your photoshop or paint or GIMP or whatever, and delete the stupid notes. Boycott the scanlation group. Make your own scanlation.
Or even better, teach yourself Japanese/Chinese/Korean and just stop reading scanlation. Save yourself the eyesore.

Mams, you get the .rar off your computer. 😛

I appreciate having things explained to me in the margins, such as a term in Japanese that I otherwise wouldn't understand (usually, about food...) Otherwise, I just don't read the comments; let the scanlators put in whatever they want, so long as it isn't a really stupid comment in the middle of a good scene 😢

No, I can't stand them.

Unless it's a Hentai. Then I don't care.

I don't mind actually, they're either informative or make me chuckle so either way it's good.
