are you asking for an overall depressing series or depressing climaxes? (i.e. Heart-tugging climax)

With whoever said the manga has no atmosphere to effect you i disagree...its true that its easier to become effected by anime because u don't have to do much work while watching, however i've read mangas that really dragged me in and i had to often give myself a reality check e.g NANA is very engaging with all types of moment, painful, happy etc...

Both, i feel either one works as long as the essence is there.
As for suzuka, i found tha part where he screwed up with her the first time to be pretty sad imo. I meant certain parts of those animes i listed, not the entire thing in generally usually.

How dare you say that anime is more able to evoke feelings!! I put a curse on you TV generation nogoods!!!!!May your Ass grow big and eat your right leg!
Sad manga can be very beautifull, just as sad love songs are often very beautifull. Really depressing is something different.
Very depressing part of EDEN, end of Volume 3. Village Girl that became a prostitute steps on a mine. Her friends try to help her, but are being targeted by a sniper. Sniper first shots a friend trying to reach her, and when he reaches her he shots the girl in the leg. No more wieght on mine, mine explodes -> mortally wounding both of them. Other friends kill the girl as a mercy act.
Now thats depressing, Take that suckas!
Other depresing stuff: as mentioned ARIGATOU, DEEP LOVE is also pretty depressing in a way. LAMENT OF THE LAMMS is also pretty sad, if not outright depressing. UNCIVILIZED PLANET has a few pretty sad moments ( between all the sex and violence, still good ) as do almost all works by MATSUMOTO JIRO. KITOH MORIHO has some pretty depressing stuff. Bokurano is in some parts, in a different short story a poor street girl is picked up by a young man with a terminal illness ( its contagius ) and givin the option of being his sex toy untill he dies. She will be infected and die after 3 years, but she will be givin his money when he dies. She accepts. Pretty sad i say.
The french have a lot of sad stuff. Can't think of anything else right now.

woa there... that's pretty sad, but it seems more... messed up then anything, lol. Also that EDEN part seemed rather depressingly brutal too.

I think a lot of mangas/anime have sad parts. i cried when i watched the episodes of one piece where they talked about nami and robins past. also i think battle royal is pretty sad espcially when these 2 best friends hated each other and just when they made up and hugged each other... they got shot...

even though its messed up, it sadly makes a lot of sense. She would have died otherwise, so it was a win win situation. He got his sex, she got 3 more years to live.
A different Manga i stopped reading was Happy! from URASAWA Naoki because everything just keeped on getting worse. I don't know if i stopped because i found it depressing or annoying.

i know alot of you guys are gonna make fun of me for saying this, but... i cried a lot when i read naruto...
so many scenes made cry like a baby... like in the beggining when they reveal the naruto is a demon and
how everyone despises him, yet its revealed that iruka actually cares for him... also when they showed the past of certain characters i cried alot too ,like gaara, haku and rock lee...
to tell the truth i think of all the mangas, it was naruto that made me cry the most,
Maybe is becouse i was having a tough time back then and needed something to vent my pain...

naaah, don't worry, wouldn't do that.
I admit i thought bleach was pretty sad when rukia was about to be beheaded, so i ain't that much better.
I know i am almost spamming this thread by now, but i just rememberd a good depressing manga. DEAD END, i know i've been saying how great it is every chance i get, but it is sort of depresing, so i can list it here too.

yea actually i agree, naruto can be really sad. But, they kinda did the rejection/outcast part so well, that they started using it over and over again, and the next thing you know, like half the characters are 'just like him', and the anime's fillers didn't help the series much either
I liked the first naruto anime ED tho, Wind ^^

Like this manga by my favorite author (Minoru Furuya), called Himizu. Most people think its the most depressing shit you'll ever read.
But I adore it. I LOVE seeing losers struggle through life like that. Its way too funny and interesting.
what is probably more depressing than this manga is the fact that you can only get the first volume on the net. I'll try to stear clear to not be left waiting forever for the rest.

Its gotta be pretty good if only 1 volume is available and its already giving that sad of an atmosphere. That is, assuming that you've only read 1 of the 4 volumes. but i agree with bully, im afraid of touching it since there's only 1 volume xD
