__> I feel weird about interrupting the conversation, but I'd say the saddest thing I think I've read was Fruits Basket.. in the middle of the series, during the arc about Tohru's mom and how she fell in love with Tohru's dad, and then when the dad died..

I mean, I've never actually cried when reading a manga. Maybe it's just me.. I only remember one time I've cried when reading something, but I hear people talking about crying in reaction to stuff like stories and manga all the time. Still, even though I never actually shed tears, that section of Furuba nearly made me!! The angst! The total and complete sadness of it... sighs I think the saddest part is that we all knew it was going to happen... And then Tohru's dad turns out to have such a strange personality that it makes the fact worse, plus the whole thing about how much he loved Tohru, and Tohru's mom's reaction... ;___;

I do have to agree that Deep Love (that includes Pao's Tale, Ayu Story and Host) is a saga that deeply touched me. I did cry tears and all because of the hopelessness of it all and I only read the first opening chapters of the last two! (I did read all of Ayu tho) (I can't wait for the rest to be scanlated!)
I love how it all the story link together. Overall I think its a very satisfying crying experience, very touching! VERY depressing! 😀

celinae:

How about when Tohru gets pushed off the cliff or when Kyo says he killed Tohru's mom?

Don't worry at all about interrupting the conversation to contribute your own recommendations & such, this thread was created for recommendations after all, not just discussion alone. Feel free to interrupt at any time if you have more good depressing manga series/moments.

Your comment about fruits basket's particular scene is interesting, because though it sounds like a cliched thing & often used/referenced type of story/flashback, it must have been executed very nicely to make some1 feel so much. Thanks for your input, i'll add fruits basket to my list of manga's to check out in the future

I felt sad when I was reading Hikaru no Go and

Sai disappeared and after Hikaru run all over japan to find him, he realised that he was always there in the games that he played.

Also Fullmetal Alchemist is sad especially when

Hughes dies and when Winry goes to his house after she learns.

i agree with you completely on both series. those were some pretty damn depressing moments, and even after what happened in HnG, you can still feel the after-effects through the rest of the series. HnG is a good series on the general really, though the ending was a bit lacking imo.

At the moment, Nana is the most depressing manga for me. The situations in the story hit close to home because the events are something that I or someone close experienced. They're all events that can happen in life (within reasons). This is probably why Nana appealed to me more than most.

I get depress reading NHK sometimes too...mostly because it is a reflection of me 😲

I don't find Nana depressing...because the situations are usually self inflicted or the occur due to natural circumstances. I can't find that depressing...if I do I would be in a perpetual cloud of doom!! What I think of Nana...is that it's simply beautiful because of that element of reality.

I have never read Hikaru no Go past the third volume...but I have watched the anime...
and yes I did sit there with a box of tissues (a friend had warned me) and I thought...what is this moisture in my eyes?
It was so heartwrenching that scene....you know the one...

Where Hikaru goes back to try and find Sai's name on the historical register and doesn't find it and how his cry for him came from deep within his heart..tear Oh and the dream scene too..where Sai gives him the fan..tear I love that anime...holds a special part in my heart it does!

Hikaru no Go was sad right there, but it basically caused the bad ending for the manga...

hmm, now that you mention it, that's true. i never thought about it, but that really made the series sort of hang in nothingness in the end. I was wondering what felt wrong, i guess its hard to end the series with something like that happening though.

in a different short story a poor street girl is picked up by a young man with a terminal illness ( its contagius ) and givin the option of being his sex toy untill he dies. She will be infected and die after 3 years, but she will be givin his money when he dies. She accepts. Pretty sad i say.

woa there... that's pretty sad, but it seems more... messed up then anything(/quote)

even though its messed up, it sadly makes a lot of sense. She would have died otherwise, so it was a win win situation. He got his sex, she got 3 more years to live.

Which part of Bokurano is it exactly? There's 30 chapters so I don't know if this manga is a bunch of different stories or is this just part of one big one?

Not too sure bout the manga but in anime Texhnolyze...it's just gory n stuff at the start and you don't know what's happening really. But when the plot ties up in the last 2 episodes or so...the ending couldn't be more freakin depressing! Man...I get angry just thinking bout it, LOL. So much potential...like most anime. sigh

Sorry, wasn't very clear there. Thats not in bokurano, its from the same author Kitoh Mohiro. Kotonoha is doing a small series of his called hallucination from the womb. So far 5 chapters. Each chapter is losely connected, more like oneshots.

To hikaru no go:
I saw the anime and read the manga, ( mostly because i had a Go crazed flatmate and was playing too ) but i never thought of it as sad. Never took Hikaru seriuos at all i guess. I was just sad Sai was gone because he was fun, and hikaru wasn't fun without him.

Well, I kinda though about posting about Texhnolyze in this thread, but since it's an anime... Glad someone did it.

Anyway, in terms of "Depressing", this stuff beats almost anything I've watched (haven't read this kind of manga yet), but it's strong ending is what basically made me remember this anime. It's depressing... and hell, I really friggin' cried.

That's why, imho, the "potential" wasn't ruined and the ending was depressing but still fantastic. Kinda makes you feel human for the fact that an anime can give rise to such strong emotions.

Still is one of the most underrated anime though.

I think Battle Royale has some quite depressing parts. Like the scene in the lighthouse... Friends killing friends... just terrible
