There are various concepts of what free will is, in an absolute sense, it's a complete nonsense, as Fate is. So, somewhere in the middle like free will as non interference or free will as autonomy would make more sense.

Fate and Free Will...

...one doesn't have to undermine the other. Even if Fate exists, if you don't know what your fate is going to be, then it doesn't matter, right? It won't effect your free will at all. Free will is only compromised if you are able to see/know your fate.

Free will is not about the end result, which is what Fate is all about. Free will is celebrated in the choices we make as we live.

Let's say... that at the end of a long path is our fated destination. Our journey will have to end there at one point or another. But we still have free will... that is, we don't have to just walk a straight line towards that destination... we can Zigzag around as we move forward. We can wander off the trail and explore the surroundings... we have a choice to do that, you see? So that even if that fated destination exists, we can still have free will in our lives. Our free will works within the concept of Fate.

Free will is determined by Fate. What you like, what you want to do, you don't choose, it is all determined by external sources: by your DNA, by culture, by social experiences, etc...

It is simple: you will always choose what you believe is best, but your beliefs are determined by those external sources. (live in a violent society/family, become a violent person, choose violent actions)

As comonly said: environment determines the individual. Of course the individual also determines the environment, but to a ridiculous lesser degree, like: 99,9999999% fate, 0,000000001% free will.

If you can abstract the fact that "free" will is also determined, than you can think freedom exists.

interesting....we've been reading lots of plays and poems about that idea of fate vs free will in my english class this year...oedipus rex and a bunch of shakespeare crap (macbeth)...in literature, writers usually utilize that concept of fate in their writing...the protagonist, in an attempt to fight off fate, turn out to achieve exactly what he was destined to do...

in reality, i don't believe in fate, or destiny, for that matter....i think you're responsible for everything in your life, well, except for the things your environment has caused to you...we all have free will to do what we want to do...there's always a second or third option to choose from...the problem is, most of the time, we're restricted by sets of rules and patterns we must follow...

i think going up against fate is possible...you just have to do something totally uncharacteristic of yourself, 'cause your free will is shaped by the foundation of your personality...if you're fated to eat strawberry ice cream, but you happened to be alergic to it, you can either follow the bet from your so-called friend and eat it because of your stubborn pride (fate right there)...however, you can always listen to your common sense and walk away~

the only things i could consider as fate are that i was born into my family and none other and that i have inherited some abilitys from my parents or that i have taken to some habbits and things like this

the rest is just the free will

if i learn i will get a good grade, otherwise a bad one, its just simple like this

Yes, we have have free will but a limited one.

We can make choices, shape our lives but only to a certain degree since there are other factors not dependant on our will but which can be attributed to our genome, environment, etc( call them collectively as "fate" if you want...) and interaction between these factors that greatly influence how our lives will turn out...

We make the choices... It's just the things our choices may lead us to is what we have no control over.

i say its a lil bit of both, but then again i am a big Doctor Who fan so am gonna use the whole time is flexible argument along with the fixed events suggestion. the future is what we make of it through our day to day decisions and unless what we do has a huge impact on the space time continium it safe to say the future is not set in stone and thus is guided by our will

I'm a huge believer of existentialism, we are beings who give purpose to our life through the actions we do and each action has its consequences which mold and shape us.
There is no fate or destiny just self determination.

There are something which were just meant to be... yet we create our own destiny.

And if you truly wish for something, your will will inevitably override your 'destiny'.

I tend to lean more to the free will side.... but me and my bank account can't win against fate. 😢

Free will within fate. God gives us control over our own lives, but He's also not going to let someone like us screw up His plan for us. Yeah, kind of contradictory, but it's what I believe.

Quote from pumpupthevolume

i believe in fate and will..i mean its fate that everyone is gona die you wont be able to stop it

That's more biology than fate/will...human bodies suck, it's really inefficient...

Fate/Free will, in the end it's still the same thing. You can say one over the other but switch it around and it'll still be the same result. Life is life, take what you want and walk however you want. That is both your fate and free will so long as you don't get hung up on one or the other.

Fate isn't something that is always concrete and neverchanging. It's just as alive as you are if not more so. So a little of both can go further than just one along.

There's always a choice, even if it's really hard to see, that will be the intersect of free will and fate.
