Terry Pratchett for the win, guys!
And Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere and Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged are two very different, but both really good, books.

I just finished reading Kurt Vonnegut's Cat's Cradle and it was fan-tastic. I highly recommend it.

ah..the last book i was really impressed by (and the only one that comes to mind at the moment) was Transformation (Rai Kirah series) by Carol Berg
oh..and i don't know if anyone has mentioned it yet but i'm halfway through The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath, and it must be good if it can keep my interest despite the fact that it has a female main character
oh...and if anyone has any reccomendations for any slashable books i would be extremely thankful....by the way Transformation, i think, would definately be a slashable book 😀

How have I not replied to this thread yet!?
Some great books that I think everyone should read (I'll try to pick ones that, while still rather well-received, aren't going to be as instantaneously recognizable):
If on a Winter's Night a Traveler by Italo Calvino
The Book of Laughter and Forgetting by Milan Kundera
Ten Nights' Dreams by Natsume Souseki (okay, it's Souseki, but it's still so good...)
The Castle by Franz Kafka
Labyrinths by Jorge Luis Borges
...yes, I have very distinct tastes.
On a more modern end:
The Way Through Doors and Samedi the Deafness by Jesse Ball
Some Things that Meant the World to Me by Joshua Mohr

Swordspoint by Ellen Kushner.
Jane Austin's novels are definitely satirical although their romance. Orson Scott Card writes good and though-provoking sci-fi. I love the Honor Harrington series by David Weber (military sci-fi) because the main character is awesome; his other books are good, too. Catch-22 by Joseph Heller and anything by Kurt Vonnegut is satirical. And I heard about a parody of Pride and Prejudice called Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.
Almost anything by Tamora Pierce and Mercedes Lackey. Anne McCaffrey's sci-fi was interesting (some more than others).
(these are my opinions)
The last days I've been obsessed with A Song of Fire and Ice. o_o
It's so goooo~d.

That it is, Doc. That it is.
Best fantasy since Tolkien, without any argument.

Hmm there has been many series better than Tolkien's in-between, so a bit strange statement.
Some other nice fantasy series:
The Malazan Book of the Fallen
The Name of the Wind
The First Law
The Wheel of Time (Some people feel it is too slow in the later books.)
The Farseer
Earthsea Cycle
A Sword of Shadows
As for a single great book. Stranger in a Strange Land by Heinlein.

I have to disagree with that assertion. There were many good series but nothing as strong as Tolkien's work.

Personal favorites:
The Belgariad series of 5 books by David Eddings. The followup:
The Mallorean series of 5 books, followed by 2 stand-alones
Belgarath the Sorcerer and
Polgara the Sorceress (all by Eddings, and his wife).
Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card - at least that one, if not the entire Enders series.
Sadly, most of the rest of what I have read lately has been Star Wars related or pop.fic., so I'll have to post others later.
If you've ever thought or said "Nice Guys finish last" and really meant it, then you should probably read this LJ post by DivaLion. It's incredibly insightful whether you're male or female.
From a bumper sticker I like:
"If you're gonna ride my ass, at least pull my hair."
The Third Eye by Lobsang Rampa (Really crazy book, a must read)
Doors of Perception by Adlous Huxley
and........hmmm maybe
A Scanner Darkly by Philip K. Dick
Been wanting to read Children of Men,
oh sorry also Starship Troopers by Robert A. Heinlein (Tough to get through some parts, but still a good read)
Insert Catchy Signature Here.

Amen.
(But so is Catch-22 by Joseph Heller.)
(And The Blind Assassin by Margaret Atwood)
(And Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami)
(Also I thought North & South by Elizabeth Gaskell was pretty damn good for a classic.)
