I searched the forums and couldn't find a similar topic... Manga is mostly fiction, so I suppose all of you read it 🙂

I haven't really thought about the reason why I read so much fiction until my mom pointed it out and tried to prove me that it's a waste of time. The answers in the poll are arguments I used while discussing it with her - I managed to convince her, but then I started thinking about reasons why other people read fiction. So I created this poll 🙂

I know that some answers are similar and there's no "all above" option - I'd like you to choose one option that is the most appealing. If some of them are not clear, I'll try to explain 🙂

Also, if you answer this topic, I'd like you to write what kind of fiction do you enjoy reading the most:

  • realistic, with characters and events which are fictional, but likely to exist
  • based on real events, but with fictional elements added by the author (like Vinland Saga)
  • fantasy
  • science-fiction
  • mixed - with both realistic (likely) and fantasy elements

Uhhhh in my opinion fiction is a lot more interesting than non-fiction... plus, there's so much more fiction out there than non.

Hmm... I like realistic-ish type stuff and once in a while I'll pick up some science-fiction.

Hmm... That's a difficult question. I like all kinds of books; fiction, non-fiction, pretty much anything.

But I prefer fiction, and fantasy a lot more. I suppose this is because creation and creativity are so fascinating to me. Being able to see fantasy worlds with people, places, gods, everything created out of nothing is just so interesting to me.

And of course, it is entertaining. So, yeah... Fantasy is my favorite type of book to read, and that is pretty much why.

The question is not "Why is fiction better than non-fiction", but "Why do you read fiction", so it doesn't matter if you read other kinds of books, I just asked why you read this particular one 🙂

Fiction huh?

I find most non-fiction stuff is either nature books, cookery books etc, and autobiographies.
I just don't find it interesting to read about someone else's life when they're just releasing the book because they need the monies or are just making the most of their fame they have at the moment (name Justin Bieber. Yes. Justin Bieber is apparently releasing an autobiography! I know!), and cookery books...well I can't cook so yeah 🤣

I'm sick of reality really. We live it everyday. It's nice to read something that isn't real and just escape the world and have this different world swimming around and creating itself in your head.
Having said that I do like my history novels, so that's fiction based on real events, just told from how the author interprets what happened back in those days using known facts as a base.

There's two kinds of books I read. Philosophical works, essays and books by philosophers or books that are a collection of essays around a central topic.
The other is science fiction.
I like the how really good science fiction portrays futuristic societies and their ethical and social problems.
The Mote in God's Eye was absolutely brilliant.

Yes, sorry, I was rambling. I answered the fiction and why I like it so much more than other books in the other huge chunk of that comment xD Sorry!

And I feel that fiction isn't as dry as the other books I read. 🤣

No problem, I knew that people would misunderstand it so I thought it would be better to explain this now than later 🙂

I read a bit of both, really. When it comes to fiction, I prefer to read more realistic stories centered on everyday people, but I also enjoy old horror novels and short stories, and some science-fiction because I like to see how people envision the future. I can't stand fantasy though for the love of my life though.

I don't read non-fiction as much, but when I do it's usually about war.

For entertainment. Mostly I prefer realistic/based on real events. I enjoy fantasy as well, just not as much.

I'm not entirely sure, but I can't read just any fiction (or nonfiction, really). It has to be a subject/style/etc I'm interested in, and then I just love to read all the time. I like the hilarious situations in comedy, the pain/anxiety/angst in drama, the cute situations in fluffy romance, the action scenes, the psychological stuff... it's all entertaining to me. If I'm reading a decent book/manga, I never feel like I'm wasting my time.

I suppose I should say I read fiction simply because I like it. It's something I enjoy doing, and that's a good enough reason for me.

I mostly read things that will never happen in non-fiction stories, so I guess it's for entertainment and wishful thinking purposes. 🤣

Why do we do anything we don't have to?
Because it's fun.

I love stories.
I thought about it, but I don't know how to explain it.
And it's not that I don't like non-fiction.
I've just come across fewer well written ones, like Stefan Zweig's Marie Antoinette.
Just because it really happened, doesn't mean it should be dry.

And I like realism.
I like reading about real people going through things I haven't.
It's interesting.
I especially like reading about people in other times, though futuristic or fantasy settings have never especially drawn me. Maybe because they always feel "too made up". 🤣

Ahh, dunno. I'm sleepy. =/
