I just finished the most excellent Alabasta arc and quickly devoured the Skypeia arc and was about to change my opinion that One Piece was a kids' manga and then we get to the end and see that Conis father is still alive after an incredibly destructive blast. While Oda sensei deserves an incredible respect for his artistic ability, his incredible storytelling ability and for bringing the world a refreshingly different manga..it does amaze me that he sets up these wonderfully complex and innovative storylines only to have side characters make incredible sacrifices (the kind that make the stories that much more epic and engaging) only to survive in the end with barely any explanation. It just seems to justify the low rating I gave One Piece as a kid's manga. It's a shame cuz One Piece should be a manga for everyone and include storytelling that has meaning and heart and it seems to have both but it lacks the ultimate will to have evolution and sacrifice be themes for fear of losing kids. This isn't the case in Naruto which obviously appeals to both but doesn't shy away from brutal violence, evolving characters and the death of main characters. That said, I'm going to try the Davy Back saga..one hopes before One Piece comes to a close it will feature something in the way of sacrifice and evolution.

It's one of the many Cliche's in stories:
No one ever dies, they always get revived somehow
For example, princess Yue in Avatar, or Allen Walker in D.Gray-man, heck...Diablo in....Diablo(game), Cortana in Halo, Mahoro in Mahoromatic, May in Handmaid May, the first bad guy in Naruto (the one that came back as a tiger-man), that thief in Yugi-oh (the one in Bokura), lol...Gandalf in LOTR!
Theres just so many examples.
It's a cliche you just have to live with IMO 😃

hey hey, use spoiler ok? You just ruined a bunch of ending for some people.

And Gandalf never actually died. He just became a higher power White Wizard who kicked everyone's behind.

and Allen Walker was cursed so he can't actually die. Besides, if Allen dies, the mangaka goes bankrupt.

He did die, but reincarnated as Gandalf the white >_>

Theoretically, he died coz his heart was crushed, he only came back due to his innocence

Wizards does not die....well good wizards anyway. And another thing, in the book, only a few elf died while in the movie, you see a hill of elf bodies.......

If you ever read the prequel of The Lord of the Rings, it is said that during the first war against evil, only one elf died.

Nami's mom and all the people on Ohara island (except for Robin) died. People DO die just not in front of your face. shrugs

Well if you think about it, why would you want to kill them off? I mean they don't seem to serve a purpose that alters the storyline, so why not let them live and have a nice aftertaste after reading the manga.

its doubtful that any of the main characters will die. it would be tragic enough but more so as most or all of them have experienced a painful childhood.

This isn't the case in Naruto which obviously appeals to both but doesn't shy away from brutal violence, evolving characters and the death of main characters. -Daedalus

for me i think one piece is the more violent and emotional series and that is probably why the dubbing was so childish. Luffy stabs himself, rocks are thrown at children, children are abused by adults and people are killed. death in one piece is downplayed as they are traveling quite often and they fail to really make a deep and maintain a long term connection with people before they have to move on. Naruto revolves around a central place and thus death among the community is more heartfelt and emotional.

you want sacrifice? theres a lot of those sorta scenes in the characters pasts. but if you want one on the present timeline, keep reading. its just one of oda's policy. no one dies in the present timeline. sorta keeps the whole "Luffy making a miracle happen" policy packing more impact.
