Does anyone ever actually die in One Piece?
Quote from IcedWolf
From what I have read if you really want something dead just read Berserk XD. It is a manwah, but hey if your not satisfied with the well written One Piece, there is always an alternative 😀
Berserk is a manhwa 😕 😲
Anyway in One Piece no one is actually expected to "die" (maybe minor characters), cause its focused on other things than realism or such. And i still like it as it is 😛

I wonder why those that say Naruto is better than One Piece basing on "Naruto has more death in present time" failed to noticed the plot device used by Kishimoto in Naruto's manga in comparison to Oda's way of handling his manga.
- In part one (Rescue Sasuke arc), Shikamaru and Chouji was left in near death situation and Kishimoto gave us this whole death ambiance after their fight, only to turned out alive later on.
- Gaara died. Later on, he was revived by Chiyo. Wha-?
- Pein invasion arc killed a lot of people (including Kakashi, who already ran out of chakra). Later on, all those people were revived by Pein itself. What the?
One Piece hinted death to minor character. Their death, while in the specific scene (mostly sacrifice) would make the story better, we all know those character isn't going to play a major role / having a significant role in the future. Compare it to Naruto, those characters I mentioned above are the characters that have a significant roles / have a potential to be developed in the manga in the future, but where are they now? They are left undeveloped.
To me that's more lame than Oda's concept of 'avoiding death in present time'. Kishimoto killed a character, only to revived them back in Dragon Ball ish manner by introducing "reviving plot device no Jutsu". =____="" What's the point of showing them dying / dead if you're going to revive them later on? Toying with your readers much?
I'm sure I would be disappointed if Oda went down the same route as Kishimoto. Killed off a characters. Later on, magical things happened - that character's soul was summoned back, and return to life. So far Oda only hinted death, where the reader speculates whether this or that character will die but he never confirmed or make a blunt statement the character was indeed a100% dead. Unlike Kishimoto who already confirmed this or that character has died, only to revived them later on using a plot device . That's just lame and bad writing.
Speaking of writing, I feel more amaze to see how a manga like One Piece manage to keep their "no death in present time" concept survived for this long. Most mangaka always resort to killed off a certain character to be used as a plot driven or a character development (ie; Asuma's death > Shikamaru development).
That's why One Piece is more deep than any other Shounen I've read (not going to compare this Shounen to Seinen because that'd be stupid). They used death in more powerful way for plot driven and character development. They gives us the story first, keep all the mystery and make us wonder what and why things happened before revealing the backstory later on. They introduced us the characters first, before explaining their past story. That's why flashback in One Piece is something to look forward to not only because we will see death on it 😛 but also learned and linked / connected it to the present / main story. Unlike any other.. manga... that keep repeating the same flashback (over and over again) and later on refined the same flashback to make their story better (makes me wonder if they actually planned out the whole story from the beginning or just going with the flow), One Piece cleverly used death and flashback into a brilliant storytelling without turning it into a redundant and cliche' read.
This is a Shounen after all, and it doesn't have to take itself seriously. If you want some serious read, go read Seinen series. Most Shounen that tries to take itself seriously by introducing death, and try to come up with complex intricate plot always failed to execute it. Most of the time, they will relies to plot device or Deus Ex Machina to explained things to their readers which to me, makes the manga lame.
Sorry if I came up criticizing and comparing One Piece with Naruto in this post, but it's the easiest comparison to make without having other people goes WTF if I used unknown / unpopular series. After all, most of the stuff in Naruto manga consisted stuff that used in a lot of other Shounen manga before it. I'm not saying One Piece is more original than Naruto but at least it has more fresh and unique approach to it compare to Naruto that seems to used and recycled stuff from past, and present manga.
Jojo's Bizarre Adventure > One Piece >>>>insert other Shounen manga>>>>>>>> Naruto in term of originality, fresh, and unique idea.

Yes, it's true Oda doesn't want to sacrifice any characters. He wants to make you think, "Man--this guy has NO chance of surviving!" Yet he gives you the doubt too; so when you think the person finally dies and all you're all groany and moany, thinking, "DAMN, why'd he have to die!?", that character gets back up again. It makes you wonder, it does, about how that guy ever manages to stay alive, but it gives you a sort of relief.
So, every mangaka has their way of writing stories, and showing willpower in it. Oda just choose not to let anyone die. 🙂

One Piece is for all ages, including young children so no, characters don't die and if they do it's relevant for the plot. Though a few people did die in the anime... probably...
Besides I'm not really interested in the Strawhat crew murdering every dude they see, that's not their thing. As for a main character dying, no way.
I'm not interested in seeing a main character die either. If a main character is going to die, it'll probably be Luffy at the end of the series or something.

I actually really like the fact that the villians don't always die. Or anyone else. It's amusing when they have their own side stories in the front covers. AKA Raising money for Rob Lucci's surgery
And I find it interesting that they pop up later in the main story as well. It gives One Piece a bit more depth IMO since the characters are just disappearing after Luffy and Co. are done beating them.
The Gonis being alive thing was hilarious! He just pops up at the end like nothing ever happened!
But...
Now no one can say no one ever dies in One Piece. Poor Ace... T^T

Haha, nicely said.
I personally think One Piece is WAY better than Naruto. Of course, its my opinion. Never the less, One Piece has a much better plot... than Naruto ever will. ):
LOL
Don't you guys think it's cheating to revive such an old thread?
It's obviously from another pirate era... Things aren't so simple now... 🤣

There no point in killing anyone of Luffy's Crew and Oda himself said that Luffy don't believe in killing anyone, so that explain pretty much everything. Deathes of Ace and Whitebeard shows that Death happens and meaniful ones. My opnion about Naruto was express by the big post on this page -_-
