but

ace is dying as of 489

You really think that's gonna happen? -_-
Think of it like bleach...would the number of readers maintain if rukia had been successfully executed?

in most manga, particularly shonen, regardless of the cliches presented, one of the aspects which happens to be the focus of most series is the huge development of the main character differentiating greatly from it's beginning to it's end. a difference that can clearly be noticed somewhere in the middle of the series.

ie: from Kenshin's weak resolve to following his vow (quickly reverting to Battousai, when he's desperate) and the burden of his sins, to accepting the sins he committed by putting all of his devotion to his promise. Gon was inexperience and naive. but as he progresses, he learns more, and gains experience. with his latest trial ahead of him (his apparent confusion on Pitou's cruelty to Kite and his(her?) treatment on a random girl), it will be a big leap in his development.

one of the most important lessons in most series is death; to learn to cope and fight against the sadness, as well as realize the strength and flaw of sacrificing oneself, accepting the harsh reality one has to live through.

OP is different. instead of focusing on developing the characters, something the East Blue saga has completely done on its own, it mostly focuses on the journey. why develop the characters when they are already developed? sure, there are minor tweaks here and there that has,and may well be done later on, but on the basis of death and sacrifice, most of the characters have faced and overcome this.

they give it their all to prevent any deaths, but when they failed, they accept, knowing this is the reality of it all i.e: When the crew knew of Merry's hopeless situation, they (save for Ussop) have no choice but to grit their teeth and go get a new ship somehow.

OP, to put it as corny as possible, is a journey of miracles and dreams. and what better miracle than for everyone to smile together as one? sure, many may not believe in miracles happening in real life a lot, but OP, the manga, is meant as an escape from real life into a wonderland, not as a completely emulation of reality with a given theme.

tl;dr - death is meant in developing the characters, if not the plot. OP's characters has already passed the "death" course. so far, the main plot, that is the coming of a new pirate age, doesn't seem to be in need of a death just yet. if theres gonna be a death, it'd be best for a good reason only, rather than throw it around mindlessly.

Good post by Diokhan. I agree.

Since I'm finally reading the manga from the start(watched the anime first, and didn't start reading the manga till the middle of the Enies Lobby arc), and having this thread in mind, there are some interesting observations I've had.

At the beginning, Luffy, as a child, was all for pirates doing what they did and being super badasses who don't take anything from anyone. When the ruffians were mocking Shanks' crew and their self-control it's interesting Luffy's reaction. Especially when the crew actually responds and kills the entire group. So that matured Luffy into the correct thinking that he shouldn't abuse his power. (when his nakama or even his friends are in danger...it'd be interesting if luffy and crew start killing if they have to)

Zorro is a kind hearted guy who just wants to be the best swordsman. He won't shirk away from fighting a super strong swordsman, but the weaker ones he can't be bothered with(in this respect I kind of think that one piece is lacking, because people die in swordfights....)

Nami has the whole Arlong pirates(and Buggy pirates) to make her hate pirates to begin with, so when she joins she definitely doesn't want to be a pirate like those.

Usopp is usopp.

Sanji was attacked by pirates before. Plus he has compassion to feed anyone including villains who will turn around and attack him. (this gets me thinking that while Luffy wants certain roles filled, he is even more insistent once he knows their character)/

Chopper is a doctor.

Robin has faced the most death of everyone. Her mother(hot with white hair I must add) and saul and her archeologist teachers and everyone else all died. Plus she hung around with bad pirates esp Crocodile. So she's faced death and doesn't like it.

Franky had his father killed. Plus hates pirates.

Brooke. Is dead. So yeah. Main character who dies. What a violent manga. Poor Brooke.

So basically as Diokhan said, it's part of the character's pasts that make them good good guys who won't even kill the bad guys.

(but even then, that's just the crew and not the world in general...I still think pell should have died.

I don't know about you guys but I was actually a little scared Zoro was going to die when he went up against Kuma.

I bet at the end, some of the main character will die... Just because people keep complaining about it.

Odachi loves his characters too much to kill them, I think.

It would suck if he compromised his style just because of some complaints.

one piece is apples and naruto is oranges

I disagree with that. I like One Piece better than Naruto, but I like oranges better than apples. Can you switch the analogy around?
And I don't see why you want dead people so much. One Piece is supposed to be cheerful, it'd ruin the style if the story was littered with dead bodies. Naruto is a bit darker, therefore deaths don't seem as out of place. Death doesn't make a story better. One Piece would be pretty bad in my opinion if Oda had to change his writing style so people died.

no one special dies, but I say that's a good thing. Why would you want to make One Piece a different styled manga? I like it as it is 😛

die? There's so many deaths in One Piece actually, in ennies lobby, when the buster call was activated and the warships came, i think there was a number of deaths on the side of the marines.

Also at the beginning... didn't the fat guy in shanks crew killed a pirate... I think it's the earliest death in the series.

At Nico Robins past!! The island was destroyed and the population was annihilated except for robin... So i think at least a thousand was killed then...

See, so many deaths occurred without us noticing hahaha 🤣

Well if you're talking about the main characters... brook was dead in the first place 😀 .

Oda doesnt only 'kill off' characters in the past or flashbacks.

Eustass Kid also kills loads of civilians. so is Arlong, Kuro, Bellamy, Enel, Buggy, Alvida and Mihawk...loads of them are murderers.

Enel even has his own excecution ground!!

I highly doubt that Zoro's aint tainted his hands with blood. He must have killed lots of pirates when he was a pirate hunter and in his first bounty, it was stated that Zoro "killed" 100 bounty hunters in Whisky peak.

As for Luffy, well, he was the mastermind of the destruction of Enies Lobby, the entire island is wiped out. It is impossible to have NO CASUALTIES on that island.

Brooke. Is dead. So yeah. Main character who dies. What a violent manga. Poor Brooke.

yea! and so are the Zombies in Thriller Bark. Loads of Dead people in one piece!

People does die in one piece. that's for sure
[spoiler]Just the main characters, Straw Hat's crew that doesn't die. It's fun to see how they can overcome their challenges!

Just because the Straw hat crew doesn't really kill anyone after defeating them doesn't mean the other pirates won't.
