Romance is a joke

I've noticed that most romantic stories, whether shojo, shounen, film, sitcom, or print, seem to fall into either the categories of drama or comedy. In real life though, I've always thought that romance is more of a comedy. Now I'd like to ask what other people think. If you can, please leave a short explanation of why you think that, or an example relationship (yay, gossip! 🙂 )

Tragicomedy. You know, one of those twisted tales with black humour. Everyone says that they know what's it all about, but they really have no clue. Like with Hungarian movies~

Tragicomedy makes me think something like: "a necrophiliac falls in love with a girl, and can't decide between killing her to consumate the relationship or letting her stay alive because he fell in love with the fully mobile version. Hillarity ensues when he tries to fulfill his desire without killing the girl."
Or maybe I just figured out what the horror genre really is...

I don't know how I would describe it.. sometimes I find it really funny, other times I want to gag.. and sometimes the girl in me sighs. 🤣
If it weren't for the gutter, my mind would be homeless.

The girl in me sighs, too. I mean, she seems to have the upper hand at the moment, too, judging from the amount of shojos I've read.

Comedy... it's funny seeing how mushy people are... "I miss you so much" after a day apart, "I'll love you forever" and yet, that forever hardly lasts... and then they move on so easily to someone else. Unfortunately, I can't tell if I'm being serious or sarcastic on this...

I totally agree with you on that... you see tons of people saying, I love you.. I can't live without you, ect, ect.. but then, they're boinking some other bloke and all sorts of other stupid crap.. That's one of the reason I've never said, I love you to anyone yet.. because it has such a superficial meaning to it nowadays.. when I actually say it, it's going to mean the real thing.

Yeah, that's why I don't like the divorce rate at the moment.. 🤢 It's like marriage is just an excuse to party and spend money.. o.O

A lot of people seem to like the idea of being in love, but when it comes to the actual work of being in a relationship (being honest with each other, working out problems, compromising, etc.) it's "too hard" and "love isn't supposed to be something you work at" and so on, and they give up & move on to the next person. Or they mistake physical attraction or infatuation for "love", and once that wears off, they're on to the next person. 🤢
...Yes, I'm old, cynical, single, and pretty happy about it. 🤣

See, this seems more like the 'drama' interpretation of love. The most successful relationships seem to be built on friendship and laughter, imo, so these 'serious' relationships are doomed to fail. It is pretty funny from an outside perspective.

My idea of tragicomedy is a bit different. Something like cheesestix wrote - it's funny and tragic in one. The 'I'll-love-you-till-the-end's and 'I-miss-you's and other 'I-can't-live-without-you's. It's funny that people tell them, knowing they aren't true and yet it's tragic they always fall for it. Maybe I just have a specific sense of humour?
But I probably say so because I never really fell in love, hmm.
Btw that's a nice idea for a manga/story, that 'plot' of yours.

Hey, I like partying and spending money, so I don't really need an excuse to do it.
