Quote from jackblack901

I do not think change the genre is really a big deal because most of the popular mangaka have their unique style and it remains the same in whatever genre they do. For example, in the home page, they mentions ADACHI Mitsuru as the mangaka specialize sport genre but actually he made some non-sport shounen and I don't see much difference from his other work cuz his style is so obvious.

thought i should point out, that while most of his manga do concentrate on sport, Adachi, from my knowledge, is one of the few mangakas, if not the only, that i heard of who has worked on both the shonen and shojo demographics, as well as a few seinens. of course, his works are more well known on the former.

regarding the subject of the poll; i'd encourage it. broaden their horizons and experience. sure, a lot of famous mangakas had failed in this respect, leaving them with only one series for them to be proud of; Toriyama tried to return to his roots after finishing his non-stop fighting shonen series (Dragon Ball), going for the more adventurous and comedy filled shonen. then Cashman and Sandland was cut short. same could be said of Watsuki, upon finishing his romantic, historical series, he decided to look to the opposite side of the far east; the west. we all know how that went. when he took it to modern times, again, it's lack of popularity led it to a rushed ending.

however, there has been more positive examples, most of which i'm satisfied with. you can argue it's all thanks to the author, not the artist, but Obata Takeshi has made quite a resume with series like Hikaru no Go, Death note and, (though i'm not quite sure how popular it really is, but at least it reached chapter 50+ without a hitch, so far) Bakuman. and then, while i'm not a great fan, there's Akamatsu. took the romantic harem genre he was well known for in his previous work, and added a lot of action. no sign of it getting canceled soon. Katsura Masakazu, who's currently working on Zetman, used to made quite a lot of ecchi romance shonen.

of course, some may argue this is quite the risk to their careers, and i don't blame them. some mangakas just seemed mored fitting to just stick with their expertise; Adachi has Nine, Touch, H2 and now Cross Game; all somewhat sharing the same premise and character archetypes, affixing an air of familiarity to the fans. personally, it's why i still look forward to his work; reading about Kou is like being re-acquainted to Tatsuya/Hiro again, someone you're very familiar with, and this can make me pretty nostalgic. i'm pretty sure most fans would feel uncomfortable with the idea of Adachi doing a serious, super powered action/fighting shonen, and rather stick with the same old thing.

another example is Rumiko Takahashi; known for the situational comedy and hijinks in her series with little to no serious central plot; Lum, Maison Ikkoku and Ranma. when she did introduce a central plot in Inuyasha, it went for a turn for the worse as everything just kept dragging needlessly on and on. personally, she's better off never putting any important plot element in her series that will expand over the rest of the series.

tl;dr - depends. i'd encourage it, but if they've been successful with a number of series by sticking to their specialty, then by all means i'd rather they continue as they are.

I frankly, don't care as long as the manga is good plus it's not like I tend to follow a certain author. As long as the work is well done, there's nothing wrong with it.

BTW, I also agree that APPLE! from Shinjo Mayu, was enjoyable. In fact I wished it was longer. =3

I think they should try out things, you never know what they are proficient at. A good example of this is Yotsubato!'s author/artist AZUMA Kiyohiko whos previous works consisted of doujinshi and hentai. He still managed to pull it off and write good non-echi mangas for a vast audience.

Well... if the mangaka is only good at one genre and sucks in others, they should stick with what works, but this is probably not the case for most mangaka (not that I have thought about this much or anything, that's just my quick guess). I think crossing-over could be a good thing for a mangaka to try (they could do a one-volume manga or even just a oneshot). Some cool original stuff might come out of it; they might even find they like that new genre more or are better at it than their old one. So I picked "could be interesting" ...but, in general, something like this doesn't matter all that much to me.
Well, then again, I do feel strongly about a particular thing: hentai, shota, loli, sh ai, yaoi, and yuri are nasty garbage, so if that's a mangaka's usual, then of course they should definitely switch to another genre, or quit.

At a certain point, it is a case of getting out of a rut.
After all, if you do Shoujo manga, you will find yourself going through the motions after a while and not coming up with anything new (or memorable).
If that mangaka tries a sports manga as a change, they will be including the personal interactions in a way that a sports mangaka might overlook. At the same time, when they go back to shoujo, they will bring a sense of action they might overlook.
