I'm a "periodic" vegetarian which means I'm vegetarian so long as I can afford to be - every 2-3 years I become anemic, though, so I have to go back on a meat diet for some time and then return to being a vegetarian. (There's nothing normally wrong with a good vegetarian diet that would make you anemic, but I have blood problems with iron absorption so I can't be a non-stop vegetarian.) I prefer being vegetarian because I like the simplicity and the non-fat value of it; in the years I've been a vegetarian I've never once put on weight. That and my body just feels fresher and lighter, my hair silkier and my skin less oily - and if you prepare vegetarian food properly with lots of garnishing and spices then it tastes damn awesome. It's just a matter of getting good at it. Western-style vegetarian dishes mostly suck, though, with the exception of salads and desserts; if you want good staple vegetarian food you should try learning Hindu (basically Indian) or Buddhist cuisine (can have dishes from China, Taiwan, Vietnam, Japan, Korea etc). Believe me when I say that it tastes AMAZING. Plus I can impress my friends with my exotic dishes lol. I've become an expert on these cuisines and it feels good to have mastered so many.

This isn't to say that I dislike the taste of meat - I really really like it - but given my family's history of clogged arteries and heart disease, plus my own preference for vegetarian food as a "slim" alternative, and the moral comfort that at least as long as I can help it I'm not eating killed animals, I think being vegetarian is a pretty good deal. Lol at least being a "periodic" vegetarian is.

I've now been vego for the past 3 years; before that I was non-veg for 8 months (building up iron in my blood); before that I was vego for 2.5 years; then non-veg for 6 months; etc. Looks like my turn for another blood test and possibly another non-veg interval is coming up... Sigh.

I'm not really into organs, but I do love chicken hearts. I don't know if it's a common dish in other countries, but here's pretty much nothing of a surprise. Oh and I never eat the fat that comes with the meat, I know some people do that but this thing just turns my insides out.


I tend to avoid the fat as well, but sometimes I'm like "what the hell" if it's too troublesome to peel off.
Chicken hearts are not a common dish in England I can tell you laugh
I like eating the livers and kidneys. The brains are also very rich in flavour. (This is all from Lamb by the way)
Wild hares are also delicious. Ever eaten the head? laugh
Don't even get me started on the birds i've eaten...

Yeah I want to be. I guess because seeing that animal face and how they are treated in the plants. But, when I see that chicken on the table I just can't say no. eyes

I WERE a vegetarian
i were born with a tongue of a herbivore biggrin ... it's hard for me to eat meat/seafood when i were still young. i just trow up asap (my tongue wont accept them). but my tongue can accept the taste of eggs and cheese or milk...

but i am definitely not a vegan... i know that human is an omnivore... so as i grew up i continually challenge my self to try to eat meat/seafood... though it's kind of like a torture to me

it was at first grade of senior high school when my tongue finally able to accept the taste of chicken (maybe it's because chicken taste like everything thingy)

for beef, at the moment, i only be able to accept it when they were in a form of 'sate Padang' (in west Sumatra they just call it sate). and even that is only for a few sticks with no fat on them. or some sticks if it's the one that is sold on the end of Bukittinggi's chinatown bigrazz

but now, if i have a choice between a meal with meat an a meal without meat, i would still choose the later

for other meat and seafood.... my tongue still couldn't accept it, and i don't want to torture my self for a while..

PS @tartufo:
why not try to eat a spoon.. or a fork... jk
seriously though i thought there are many veggies out there that contain iron... or was it because of where u live?

Lol no, it's because I have a medical condition that makes it hard for my body to store iron. smile

Of course it's better for those who choose to eat meat to support those who treat their animals humanely before slaughtering them, but by reducing the total demand for meat, vegetarians do reduce the number of animals being bred & then killed.


edit: nevermind I figured there is no point in continuing this discussion as we both have our own views on what's ethical or perhaps even have different reasons entirely for why we do the things we do. So to make you happy I'll continue to buy meat that is treated well, but I'll do it moderately. Everyone wins!

I don't think I could be a vegetarian, I like meat too much. I do like vegetarian food (at least some of it), but I've never tried being totally off meat. I don't think I even want to try. But under the circumstances that there is no meat available, it would not be the world end to me.

I'll never give up meat. I don't eat a lot of it, per say, but I can't imagine not having the occasional roasted chicken, or steak.
Besides, I find vegetarianism irrational => ain't doing it.

The longest I ever lasted without eating meat was about 6months. And that was only due to doctor's orders after an accident I had. It wasn't that hard, granted, I was young...O_O

I love meat, but I can see myself eating less and less of it in the future. Even now I eat more fruits and vegetables than actual meat, I wasn't really aware of this until my aunt pointed it out. XD
